Lilly gasped out half a lung; She choked on air and was coughing from the shock. I tilted my head to the side “your what?” I said confused. He blinked at me. Two wolves behind him shifted into naked humans and walked to either side of him.
“Alpha, you said we were following you mate. You didn’t say she was a dragon.” One said, he was tall and skinny with short brown hair. “There’s no way this is possible-”
“Shut up and don’t question my mate. Go back to rear, now.” He growled. The sound wasn’t human. I covered my mouth and took another step back. The man shifted back and retreated from Adrian whimpering.
“Alpha,” The other said who was almost as big as he is.
“Yes,”
“I don’t think she knows what you are referring too.”
“Phoenix, do you know what a mate is?” He asked me
“She is not from here Adrian.” Lilly covered “she’s not from our world. H-how sure are you of this?”
He looked around with annoyance “for a while now. I smelt you scent when you crawled out of the cave, then again at the Tavern. I feel the pull to you, felt it so much I couldn’t stop myself from following you here. I thought I had more time to talk to you, seeing the spell Granny put on the house but… You left, and when you left you looked different. I thought you were an elf...”
“You said you sensed something this whole time.” I said to Lilly.
“I must have sensed you guys.” Lilly said looking at all the wolves looking at us. “I can’t doubt you Alpha, but she doesn’t seem to feel the same by the looks of it- do you Phoenix?”
He looked at me, pushing his hair from his eyes again. I don’t recognize him or anything, he is a complete stranger to me. “I don’t think so...” I said quietly.
“Maybe we should just let you two talk?” Lilly recommended
“Come Lilly.” The naked man shifted back to his brown wolf and she walked with them to the woods behind Adrian.
He stayed were he was, and so did I. The silence was weighing heavy, and I couldn’t handle the pressure. I kept shifting my weight from side to side as I felt him just stare at me. He was handsome, but I didn’t know him or feel anything for him.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know much about this world, I didn’t mean to ruin this all for you-” I started.
“You didn’t ruin anything.” He cut me off “I just don’t how- how you’re here and-” He looked away and stretched out his arm and scratched the back of his head, a lump formed in my stomach. He seemed so lost in thought, as if answers were going to form in the distance.
“I don’t know how mates work for you guys, are you really sure it’s me?” I asked
“I can feel it, see it, smell it…” He looked at me, his eyes looking almost black and bottomless. “I see you, and you do look other worldly;” He laughed, almost appearing relaxed now“like the earth just carved you up and dropped you right in front of me. This is probably the closest I ever stood to you and it feels like I’m standing next to a Goddess.” He took half a step closer. I felt so shook from his words, it made my feet feel heavier in the ground. No one ever talked to me like that before, described me in those words. I felt baffled I had to be dropped in a whole other world to be courted by a werewolf to be treated with respect. It almost made me angry at the men in my world. “You smell like melted chocolate over a warm fire in winter… No ones ever smelt like that to me before.” I took a deep breath, thinking the smell would appear. I only smelt the grass and trees. He laughed “uh, us wolves have heightened senses. I don’t think you'll be able to detect what I can.”
“You’re a wolf. I’m not, I-i don’t even know if I’m really a dragon yet. How is this suppose to work?”
“We can figure that out Phoenix.” He took a step closer and I backed away.
“I-i don’t know. I-i am going to find more people like me, so I can find the other’s here who came from my world. I don’t want to stay here, I’m doing this to know why I was sent here- why we we were sent here, then so me and whoever else can go home- to our world.” It was weird saying my plans out loud… Like someone gutted my whole insides... and now I’m empty.
He seemed baffled as if I just dropped a bomb on his whole world, but really it is just our worlds are colliding. “Oh, um- wow.” He looked at the ground.
“So maybe it’ll be best if you just for-”
“No.” He looked up at me “I’ll help you.” He looked determined, again stepping closer to me. “Please, I’ll help you. Every step of the way, you’re my mate Phoenix- don’t ask me to just forget you.”
“What-?”
“Sounds like that’s not what she wants. Maybe you should just leave.” The sound of Jace and Axel appearing behind us made me tense. I stepped back more feeling like I was doing something wrong. Lilly came rushing up to me, and grabbed my arm looking ashamed.
“Sorry, they woke up. I tried to keep them away.” She buried her face in my green curls like a scared child “Sorry.”
“No one tells me what to do.” Adrian’s voice changed, I didn’t recognize it after our intense conversation. “Especially not you two.” His voice now if booming with authority and defensive.
“She obviously doesn’t want you here or following us. Now back down.” Jace demanded, also shaking with the same energy.
“I’m an Alpha.” He growled, not moving. “I only need 2 seconds to show that to you.” His veins began popping out of his muscles.
“I’m King of the Dragons, you mutt- You’ll barely have two seconds.” As Jace’s eyes went a blaze like two burning suns, Adrian was in front of him with out even moving a step, Adrian moved with such speed I didn’t even blink. Now they stood almost eye to eye ready to kill one another.
Axel walked up next to them “hey guys, let’s stop this Alpha vs King stuff and just talk please. We don’t need to unleash the beasts.” His calm energy was slicing the tension. “Please.”
“Come on Alpha, she’s watching.” The guy from earlier tried to help as well, placing his hand on Adrian’s shoulder. Adrian looked at me, his anger being locked up now as he backed a few steps away from Jace. His veins were receding back into place but his snarl is still there. “That’s good. We don’t want to scare Phoenix, okay.” The naked man was strong and tall like Adrian. He had short brown hair and brown eyes. His voice sounded a little familiar, but from the intense male energy I ignored it.
Axel stood in front of Jace “hello I’m Axel, Prince of dragons. Maybe we should all go to camp and talk?”
We all sat around the fire place, Adrian was directly across from me with all his wolves behind him, except the once naked man who is named Brett (who Lilly conjured pants for) he sat next to him. So many wolf eyes stared at me, studying my every move. Lilly sat on my right, as we were in front of our tent, and Jace and Axel on my left in front of their own tents.
“So I think we got off the wrong foot here Alpha. You found that you are Phoenix’s mate?” Axel started smiling politely and making direct eye contact with Adrian. I was confused on what to call him, I’m not from here but I should respect their customs… I suddenly felt more self conscious and felt sweat break out on the back of my neck, even if it was cold outside. I looked and saw I was wearing the same white lace dress Grandma lent me, with the forest green cloak. I was still cold and wish I could grab my blanket.
Adrian shifted “Yes. She is, even if she doesn’t know it, I feel it.”
“I will never question that. I’m sorry it came to this, you don’t want to leave her side, it’s probably in your custom to never leave your mates side… I noticed in training the others like Phoenix when they came here is that their magic is very limited in the beginning. It’s not until their dragon is hatched that they are finally able to tap into their capabilities.”
“Are you saying that once her dragon is here, she might recognize the Alpha as her mate?” Lilly asked leaning over me.
“I don’t know what I am saying. I just know right now Phoenix has no real abilities like Jace and I. She smells like a dragon, and that’s it; she’s still human in this world.”
“What if she isn’t your mate? Then what- Alpha? You followed her here for nothing.” Jace antagonized, “how can we prove this? Where we are going anyway won’t even welcome you all there, let alone one.”
Adrian growled again. “I know she is, that’s enough.”
“She doesn’t know. So, it’s not enough.” Tension was rising again. This was all because of me, making me feel like an ugly big boulder blocking everything from moving smoothly with Axel and Jace.
“Phoenix what about the destiny spell granny used on you? Did you see anything besides the dragon?” Lilly asked me.
“A destiny spell?” People questioned her.
“It’s a containment spell my grandma made. Giving someone a small glimpse or hints at their current destiny. She thought Phoenix might be a Dragon but had to be sure so she cast it and it showed she was one.”
“Would it reveal she had a mate?” Adrian asked.
“Did you see something like that?” Lilly asked “you saw the dragon, did you see something else?”
“I-i don’t really know. I think I heard someone say my name maybe?”
“Did you bring a crystal ball Lilly?” Brett asked.
“I believe so,” She replied
“Let’s call grandma.”
