Chapter 6

~death~ I knew this was a bad idea. Why the hell did I agree to watch over the prez’s sister? Oh, right. Because I was the only one good enough for the job. As I exited the prez’s office, I cursed my situation under my breath. How the hell was I supposed to protect her when all I wanted to do was throw her over my lap and remind myself exactly why getting involved with her was a bad idea? Shaking my head to clear my thoughts, I made my way downstairs and spotted her talking to Drifter. “Vick, we need to talk,” I said gruffly. I watched as her eyes filled with a mix of curiosity and concern while she made her way toward me. I couldn’t help but look at her. She was stunning, and that only made my job harder. “What’s going on?” she asked, her voice steady despite the worry in her eyes. “Your brother wants me to protect you,” I said bluntly. “Things are going to get rough, and I need you to follow my lead. No arguments.” She nodded, understanding the seriousness of the situation. I felt a small flicker of relief. At least she wasn’t going to fight me on this. “Do you need anything?” I asked. She nodded shyly. “Just a few items.” With that, I turned and headed upstairs for my keys. When I came back down, she was still standing there waiting for me. “Let’s go,” I said, leading the way outside. We walked toward my bike, and she stopped, staring at it like it was some foreign object. “Hop on.” I climbed onto the bike, and she carefully got on behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist. I groaned at the contact. This was going to be one long-ass ride. “Hold on tight,” I instructed before starting the engine. We rode through town until we reached the boutique. As I shut off the engine, I scanned the area, making sure the coast was clear before helping her off the bike. “Go inside and get what you need. I’ll be right here.” She nodded and walked into the store. I stayed beside my bike, keeping a watchful eye on my surroundings. This was a risky trip, but it had to be done. I just hoped we could get through it without s**t hitting the fan. I leaned against my bike, scanning the area while keeping an eye on her. I couldn’t help but admire her from a distance. Her beautiful smile as she talked with the sales clerk. Her red hair blowing in the wind. Those captivating hazel eyes. She was perfection. When she glanced my way, I quickly looked away, pretending to focus on something else. Then I heard the door open. A loud bang followed. Then screams. Instinctively, my hand went for my weapon, my heart pounding. I rushed toward the entrance, my gun already drawn. “Get down!” I shouted when I spotted her standing there, frozen with fear. Without thinking, I grabbed her and pulled her to the ground, shielding her with my body as bullets shattered the boutique’s glass windows. “Stay low and don’t move,” I commanded. I returned fire toward the attackers. The sound of gunshots filled the air until the deafening screech of tires told me they were retreating. We had seconds before the cops arrived. “Get on my bike. Now!” I shouted. She scrambled to her feet, and we rushed outside. I helped her onto the bike before climbing on in front of her and revving the engine. We peeled away from the boutique, leaving behind shattered glass and chaos. My heart raced as we sped through the streets, but I couldn’t let my guard down. She clung tightly to me, and I could feel her trembling against my back. “We’ll be safe soon,” I shouted over the roar of the engine. Just as we pulled up to the clubhouse, she quickly got off, grabbed her bags, and hurried inside. The prez stepped outside, his expression serious. “What happened?” he asked bluntly. “Ambush at the boutique,” I replied, still on edge. “Had to get her out before the cops showed up.” His eyes narrowed. “Is she okay?” I nodded. “Shaken, but unharmed.” He glanced toward the clubhouse door before looking back at me. “Good. We need to tighten security. I don’t want this happening again.” “Understood.” I nodded and made my way inside.
