The night air clung cool against Siena’s skin, though the fire in her chest burned hotter with every heartbeat. Liam stood inches away, his eyes fixed on her like she was the only thing that existed.
Her hands curled into fists at her sides. Don’t give in. Don’t let him in again.
“Siena,” he said softly, the word carrying both command and plea. “Look at me.”
“I am looking at you,” she whispered, her voice sharper than she intended. “And all I see is a man who let another woman plant her lips on him. Do you have any idea how humiliating that was for me? To walk in and—”
“Enough.” His tone hardened, though his gaze never wavered. “You saw what Clara wanted you to see. But if you’d stayed even one second longer, you would have seen me shove her away.”
Her throat tightened, anger mingling with pain. “Maybe I shouldn’t have had to see it at all. Maybe you should have kept her far away to begin with.”
For a heartbeat, something fierce flickered in his expression. “You think I didn’t want to? I kept her around because of her father—because of obligations I couldn’t easily dismiss. But never once—” His voice broke, rough with emotion. “Never once did I let her take your place. Because no one could.”
The rawness in his tone tugged at her, but she shook her head quickly, stepping back toward the railing. “You talk like it’s that simple. Like words can erase the way my stomach dropped when I saw you together. Or the way I spent nights wondering if I was just a convenient distraction for you.”
Liam’s jaw tightened. He closed the distance between them, his height casting her in shadow. “You were never convenient. You were the only woman who ever made me lose control of my carefully built world. And you still are.”
Her pulse stuttered, betraying her. She hated the way her body leaned into his nearness, even as her mind screamed to resist.
“Don’t,” she whispered, pressing a trembling hand against his chest when he reached for her. “Don’t think you can just pull me back into your orbit with pretty words and that look in your eyes.”
His heart hammered beneath her palm, steady and strong. He covered her hand with his own, holding it against him. “I don’t want to pull you in with words. I want to earn it, Siena. I’ll do whatever it takes to rebuild the trust I broke. But you have to stop running from me.”
She swallowed hard, blinking back the sting in her eyes. “And if I can’t?”
“Then I’ll chase you until you let me catch you,” he said without hesitation. His thumb brushed her knuckles, his voice steady, unshaken. “Because I’m done losing you. Once was too much.”
Silence stretched between them, heavy with everything unsaid. Siena turned her face away, staring out at the glittering city beyond the balcony. Her chest ached with the weight of longing and fear colliding inside her.
“Do you even realize what you’re asking of me?” she whispered. “To trust you again… to open myself to being shattered all over.”
“Yes,” Liam said firmly. “And I’ll take every chance you give me, no matter how small. You don’t have to forgive me tonight. You don’t even have to let me hold you. But let me prove myself, Siena. One step at a time.”
Her lips parted, but no reply came. The sincerity in his voice left her disarmed, and for the first time since Clara’s trap, she felt the tiniest crack in her armor.
Liam leaned in, his breath warm near her ear. “You don’t have to decide tonight. But know this—I won’t stop fighting for you. Not this time.”
Her heart thundered as he stepped back, giving her space, his restraint as powerful as his touch would have been.
She stayed frozen in place, staring at him, torn between the safety of her walls and the dangerous pull of the man who had always known how to unravel her.
And for the first time, Siena didn’t know which side of herself she feared more—the one that wanted to keep him out, or the one that longed to let him back in.
