After the Spotlight

677 Words
The morning after the conference, Siena walked into the office with her head held high, but her pulse betrayed her. Whispers chased her down the corridor—colleagues pretending to type while sneaking glances, the unmistakable hum of curiosity filling the air. They had all seen it. The kiss. The way Liam had drawn her close on stage, as though she belonged nowhere else but in his arms. Siena gripped her tablet tighter and pushed through, determined to bury herself in work. But no matter how hard she tried, the memory kept replaying—his lips on hers, the pressure of his hand at her waist, the way the world had disappeared in that instant. “Morning, scandal,” Emma’s voice sang as she leaned against Siena’s desk, waving her phone. “Care to explain why half the industry thinks our boss is starring in a romance movie with you?” Siena groaned. “Emma…” “What? I’m just saying—it was bold. And very, very hot.” Emma grinned wickedly. “So, was it just for the show, or are we talking second chances here?” Siena opened her mouth to reply, but the sound of the glass door swinging shut cut her off. Liam stepped inside, and conversation across the office died instantly. His gaze found Siena’s like a magnet, a spark lighting in his eyes as though the two of them were the only people in the room. He strode over, the confidence in his movements sending Siena’s heart racing. “Good morning, Miss Marlowe,” he said smoothly, his voice low enough for only her to hear. “Recovered from last night?” Her breath caught. She tried to look composed, but his nearness unraveled her. “You caused quite a storm,” she managed. Liam’s lips curved. “Storms can be thrilling, don’t you think?” His tone was teasing, but his eyes burned with something deeper, more dangerous. He leaned closer, brushing his fingers over the edge of her desk as if testing how close he could get before she pulled away. “Though… I much prefer the quiet after. Just you and me.” Heat crawled up her neck. “Liam…” “Tonight,” he murmured, his voice velvet and command at once. “Stay after everyone leaves. No excuses.” Before she could argue, he was gone, leaving Siena breathless in his wake. --- The rest of the day blurred. Every time she caught his reflection in the glass wall of his office, every brush of his hand when they exchanged files, every fleeting glance across the boardroom—it all wound her tighter. When the office finally emptied, Emma gave her a mischievous smirk. “Don’t work too hard, boss. Or… maybe do.” Then she was gone, leaving Siena alone with her thoughts—and her anticipation. The click of footsteps pulled her from her desk. Liam appeared in the doorway, jacket draped over one arm, tie loosened, sleeves rolled up. His eyes locked on her as though she were the only thing he had come back for. “Still here,” he said softly, as if pleased. Siena stood, nerves and desire colliding. “You said you wanted to talk.” He closed the distance between them in three strides, his hand lifting to tilt her chin toward him. “Talking is only part of it.” The kiss that followed was deliberate—slow, unhurried at first, as though savoring every second of the reunion. But the hunger beneath it built quickly, years of restraint breaking all at once. His hand slid to her waist, pulling her flush against him, while hers tangled in his shirt as though anchoring herself. When they finally broke apart, breathless, Liam pressed his forehead to hers. “This isn’t a game for me, Siena. I’m done pretending I can stay away.” Her chest rose and fell, heart hammering. “Then don’t,” she whispered, and the words felt like surrender and promise all at once.
