stared at him, my mouth open, my mind unable to process the words. This was Logan. My Logan. The same boy who had held me while I cried for my mother. who had promised me forever, who had given me a ring that now sat somewhere under his bed while he slept with my sister.
"You..." My voice was barely a whisper. "You hit me."
"You are lucky I didn't do worse." He turned to my father, his shoulders squared. "Alpha, I withdraw any claim I might have had. She is soiled goods. Worthless."
The words should have hurt. They should have shattered what was left of my heart. But I found, strangely, that I felt nothing. Just a hollow space where love had once lived, now empty as a tomb.
It was then that I heard it. A sound unlike anything I had ever known. A growl that seemed to come from the earth itself, from the sky, from the spaces between atoms. It vibrated through my chest, through my bones, through the very core of my being.
Cassian stepped in front of me.
He moved like a liquid shadow, placing himself between me and the torches. between me and my family. between me and the world that wanted to destroy me. His back was bare, scarred, beautiful in its defiance, and I could feel the power coiling in his muscle.
"Touch her again," he said, his voice soft as velvet and sharp as a blade, "and I will rip your throat out and feed it to you."
The warriors tensed. My father's eyes narrowed. But Cassian didn't flinch, didn't back down. He also didn't show any fear of the twenty armed wolves surrounding us.
"Rogue," my father said, his own power rising, the Alpha command thick in his voice. "You stand in Shadow Vale territory. You have fornicated with my daughter. a crime punishable by death. You have threatened my pack members, another death sentence." He stepped forward, his wolf flickering behind his eyes. "Kneel, and I will make it quick."
"No!" I grabbed Cassian's arm, my fingers digging into his skin. "Please, listen to me. He didn't… he didn't do anything wrong. He saved me. Lilith was going to kill me, she had rogues, she-"
"Silence!" My father's command hit me like a physical blow, the Alpha power forcing my throat closed. I gasped, choking on words that wouldn't come, my hands clawing at my neck.
"Your daughter speaks the truth." Cassian said, his voice calm despite the tension rippling through his frame. "Your other daughter tried to murder her. I intervened. That is the extent of my crime, preventing a pack member from being slaughtered by her own blood."
"Liar!" Lilith shrieked. "He is lying to protect her! They were together, Father. I saw them. They were-" She made a vulgar gesture, and the warriors laughed, cruel and knowing.
"Take them," my father ordered. "Both of them. To the dungeon. We will deal with this in the morning."
The warriors advanced, and I felt true panic for the first time. Not for me but for him. Cassian had saved me, had carried me, had protected me from rogues and my sister's madness. And now he would die for it. Tortured, probably. Killed slowly as an example to any who dared cross the Shadow Vale Alpha.
"Wait," I said, my voice finding strength I didn't know I had. I stepped in front of Cassian, spreading my arms wide. "Wait. Please. He is innocent. He was just... he was just trying to help. I am the one who ran. I am the one who caused all this. Let him go, and I'll... I'll do whatever you want. I'll go to the Lycan King. I'll marry whoever you choose. Just don't hurt him."
Cassian POV
I stood there in the dark, watching Leo's chest rise and fall, feeling the old anger mix with the new fear. Hazel was right about one thing. The packs were restless. The Shadow Vale wolves were testing our borders, pushing for conflict, and without a show of strength, without a unified front...
I needed air.
I stripped off the heavy ceremonial tunic, the crown, and the rings of the office. Underneath, I wore simple clothes. worn leather, cotton, nothing that marked me as king. Ezra stirred with anticipation, sensing what was coming.
A run? he asked, eager.
A run, I confirmed. Just us. Just the forest. No kingdom. No responsibilities.
I slipped out through the servants' entrance. Just to avoid the guards who would insist on escorting me. Insist on protecting me. And reminding me every second of every day that I was property of the throne rather than a man.
The night air hit my face like a blessing. Cool. Clean. Free.
I ran through the palace gardens. over the walls. Into the wild lands that bordered Shadow Vale territory. Ezra pushed at the edges of my consciousness. wanting to shift, wanting to run as wolf rather than man, but I held him back. Tonight, I needed human thoughts. Human clarity. Human distance from the animal instincts that kept screaming that something was missing. that something was coming, that something was about to change everything.
I didn't know how right I was.
I was three miles from the border, my lungs burning, my muscles loose and warm, when the scent hit me.
Blood.
Female.
Fear.
And underneath it all, something else. Something that made Ezra surge forward with such force that I stumbled. I caught myself against a tree. My heart was hammering against my ribs like it wanted to escape.
What- I started, but Ezra was roaring in my mind. A sound of triumph and possession and desperate, hungry recognition.
Mate, he howled. Mate, mate, mate…. there, Cassian, there, run, RUN-
I ran.
Not away. Toward.
Toward the scent. Toward the blood. And toward the woman who was screaming in the distance, her voice raw with terror and defiance.
I burst through the trees just in time to see her. dark hair tangled, green eyes wild, blood on her chin and fire in her soul. She was backed against a cottage wall by three rogues and a blonde woman who smelled of madness.
And even as I shifted, even as Ezra tore through my skin and emerged snarling into the night. Some distant part of my human mind realized that Hazel had gotten her wish.
I had found my second chance.
The question was whether she would survive long enough to burn my walls down.

Seraphina POV
The torchlight hit my face first, blinding, hot, full of accusation.
I stumbled backward, my hand still clutching Cassian's arm. The clearing was filled with wolves. Not just any wolves. My father's personal guard. His elite warriors, the ones who wore the Shadow Vale crest on their chests and carried silver blades that could kill even a lycan.
And there, at the front of them all, was my family.
Lilith stood with her arm linked through Logan's. Her blonde hair gleaming in the firelight, her scar stark white against her flushed cheek. She looked like an avenging angel, if angels were capable of such calculated cruelty. Beside her, my father loomed. Marcus Blackwood, Alpha of Shadow Vale, his face a mask of rage and disappointment.
"There!" Lilith's voice rang out, shrill and triumphant. She pointed directly at me, her finger trembling with theatrical outrage. "There she is, Father! I told you she was unfaithful!"
The word hit me like a physical blow. "What?"
"Don't play innocent!" Lilith advanced, dragging Logan with her. The warriors parted to let them through. They formed a semicircle that trapped Cassian and me against the trees. "You have been sneaking around for months, haven't you? Meeting this... this rogue in secret!"
She gestured at Cassian with contempt, her lip curling. "Look at him. Naked, wild, probably a criminal. And our dear Seraphina..." She laughed, the sound like breaking glass. "Our wolfless wonder has been spreading her legs for any stray who will have her."
"Lilith, stop-" I started, but my voice came out too small, too broken.
"Is it true?" My father's voice cut through the night, deeper than the growl of any wolf. He stepped forward, and I saw the betrayal in his eyes. Not hurt, but embarrassment. Shame that his defective daughter had been caught in a scandal. "Have you been fornicating with this rogue?"
"No!" I found my voice, pushing past the fear. "No, Father, it's not like that. Lilith tried to kill me. She tied me to a chair, she had rogues. She was going to murder me!"
I pointed at my sister, my hand shaking. "Ask her about the cottage! Ask her about the blood! She-"
"Liar!" Lilith's voice cracked like a whip. She turned to our father, her eyes filling with tears that looked real but I knew were poison. "She is trying to turn this around. She has always been jealous of me, Father. Of Logan. Of everything I have." She touched her scar delicately. "She has been plotting against me since we were children."
"That's not-"
"Enough." My father's words silenced me instantly. He looked at me, really looked at me, and I saw the judgment already formed. "You have always been difficult, Seraphina. Always causing problems. But this..." He gestured at Cassian. "This is beyond the pale."
Logan stepped forward then, and my heart stuttered. For a moment, just a moment, I saw something in his eyes… doubt, maybe, or guilt. For a moment, I thought he might remember who I was. Who we had been.
"Seraphina," he said, his voice rough. "Tell me it's not true. Tell me you haven't been with him."
"I haven't!" I reached for him, desperate. "Logan, please, you know me. Five years, you know me. I would never-"
His hand moved faster than I could track.
The slap cracked across my face with enough force to snap my head sideways. My vision exploded with stars, my cheek burning, my lip splitting. I tasted copper and disbelief, my hand rising to touch the welt I knew was already forming.
"You have been cheating on me," Logan said, his voice trembling with rage that I realized was mostly shame. "All this time, making me feel guilty, making me wait for you, and you have been spreading your legs for some stray."
