Chapter 5

The official gathering began the next morning. And Lena hadn't been exaggerating. The Hale mansion was overflowing. More cars filled the driveway. More guests poured through the front doors. Wolves from neighboring packs greeted one another with hugs, handshakes, and loud conversations that echoed through the halls. The banners Ivy had spent hours hanging now decorated the entire house. Everything looked beautiful. Everything also made her nervous. She stood in front of the bedroom mirror for what felt like the tenth time. "This one," she muttered. "No..." She changed jackets. Again. A knock sounded on the door. "You decent?" Lena called. "Come in." Lena stepped inside wearing a forest-green dress that suited her perfectly. She looked Ivy up and down. "You've changed." "I know." "Twice?" "...Maybe." Lena laughed. "You look amazing." "I look like I'm trying too hard." "You look like someone who's overthinking." Ivy sighed. "Everyone's going to be looking at me." "They'll look." "They'll smile." "They'll eat." "And then they'll gossip about somebody else." "You promise?" "No." Lena grinned. "But they'll probably gossip about my uncle first." That earned a laugh. "Come on." "The welcoming dinner starts soon." They were halfway downstairs when the conversations around them suddenly grew quieter. Not silent. Just... Different. People were looking toward the entrance. Another group had arrived. A tall man stepped inside with effortless confidence. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit and carried himself like he expected every room to belong to him. Two wolves followed closely behind. "Wonderful," Lena muttered. "Who?" "The Ashfords." She sounded thoroughly unimpressed. "That man is Alpha Rourke Ashford." Ivy looked at him again. He was handsome. Too handsome. The kind of handsome that felt carefully maintained. Every smile seemed rehearsed. Every movement deliberate. "You don't like him." "No." "Neither does my dad." "Why?" "It's... complicated." Lena shrugged. "Our packs cooperate when they have to." "They compete the rest of the time." Rourke slowly greeted people throughout the entrance hall. Then his gaze landed on Lena. It lingered. Only briefly. But long enough for Ivy to notice. "I think he's looking at you." "He looks at everyone." Lena rolled her eyes. "It's part of the performance." Before Ivy could ask another question, Marcus appeared at the top of the staircase. He descended with the same quiet confidence she'd noticed before. The room shifted around him almost immediately. People straightened. Conversations softened. Marcus walked directly toward Rourke. "Rourke." His greeting was polite. Controlled. "Marcus." Rourke smiled. "It's been too long." "Not long enough," Lena whispered under her breath. Ivy bit back a laugh. "I hear you're hosting another impressive gathering," Rourke continued. "We do our best." "I never miss these." Marcus nodded once. "I'm aware." The two men smiled. Neither smile reached their eyes. Even Ivy could feel the tension. It wasn't loud. It didn't need to be. Years of history stood quietly between them. Then Rourke's attention shifted. His eyes settled on Ivy. She immediately wished they hadn't. "And who is this?" His smile widened. "I don't believe we've met." Before Ivy could answer, Marcus spoke. "She's my daughter's guest." His voice remained calm. "A human friend." Rourke looked back at Marcus. "Interesting." His attention returned to Ivy. "Welcome." "I hope you're enjoying our little gathering." "It's been... very welcoming." She smiled politely. "I'm Ivy." "A pleasure." He inclined his head. "I'm sure we'll have a chance to talk." Something about the way he said it made her uncomfortable. It sounded less like a possibility... And more like a promise. Marcus's expression hardened almost imperceptibly. "I'm certain Ivy has plenty to keep her busy." Rourke chuckled. "Perhaps." He gave one final smile before moving deeper into the mansion with his entourage. Only after he disappeared did Ivy release the breath she'd been holding. "He makes me nervous." Marcus looked after the departing Alpha. "Good." She blinked. "What?" "You should be cautious around him." His eyes met hers. "Rourke notices everything." "He studies people." "And once he thinks something is useful..." Marcus didn't finish the sentence. "He rarely lets it go." "I'll stay away from him." "I'd appreciate that." The words came out before Marcus could stop them. For a brief moment, something flickered across his face. As though he'd revealed more concern than he'd intended. Then Lena called from across the room. "Ivy!" She waved enthusiastically. "We're getting seated!" Marcus stepped aside. "I should go." "So should you." She nodded. "Thank you." He gave a small nod in return before disappearing toward the council members waiting for him. --- Dinner was far more formal than Ivy had expected. Long tables stretched across the grand dining hall beneath glittering chandeliers. Pack elders occupied places of honor. Council members sat near Marcus. Rourke sat only a few seats away from him. Close enough to talk. Close enough to provoke. Throughout dinner, Rourke made harmless-looking remarks that somehow always carried hidden meaning. "The burden of leadership must get heavier every year." Marcus simply continued eating. "I imagine a pack eventually starts wondering about its future." Marcus sipped his wine. "You've remained alone for quite some time." Silence. "I hope you're taking care of yourself." Anyone else might have believed the concern. Marcus clearly didn't. Neither did Lena. Ivy watched the exchange quietly. Marcus never lost his temper. Never raised his voice. Never gave Rourke the reaction he seemed determined to provoke. That restraint somehow impressed her even more. Late in the evening, guests drifted into smaller conversations. Music filled the hall. People laughed. Some began dancing. Across the crowded room, Marcus looked up. For just a second... His eyes met Ivy's. Neither of them smiled. Neither moved. Then someone spoke to Marcus, breaking the moment. He looked away. It should have meant nothing. Yet Ivy couldn't stop thinking about it. More importantly... She couldn't stop thinking about whether Rourke had noticed. That night she sat by her bedroom window, watching the last few cars leave the estate. The house was finally quiet. Moonlight spilled across the gardens. Sleep should have come easily after such a long day. Instead, her thoughts refused to settle. She remembered Rourke's calculating smile. Marcus's warning. The tension between the two Alphas. And that single glance across the dining hall. She rested her forehead against the cool glass. Maybe she was imagining things. Maybe she was giving innocent moments far too much meaning. But deep down... She couldn't shake the feeling that Rourke Ashford had already seen something neither she nor Marcus could afford for anyone else to notice.
