Alexander sighed, rubbing his temple. Why was there always so much paperwork? It was never ending and usually this was about when he grew too frustrated with it and needed some sort of release. His usual distraction was out of the question since he had found his mate. No other she-wolf was even remotely appealing now, not that they ever had much appeal in the first place.
Erin was the only one he wanted, the only one he would touch. Alexander supposed he could always head to the gym or head to the training grounds to spar with his warriors. Neither option sounded particularly satisfying, but they were the only options available to him.
‘We should spend time with Mate,’ his wolf complained.
‘We are not going to force her…’
‘I did not say that!’ his wolf growled. ‘We could just have lunch. I miss her scent. It’s soothing.’
Alexander certainly couldn’t argue with that. Erin’s scent was pure heaven: apple with a hint of honey. She smelled like home, warm and cozy. He just wanted to curl up with her in his arms. It wasn’t any wonder his wolf had slunk off to her bed to sleep.
Just as he wondered what she was doing, his phone chimed with a message. Curious, he picked it up to see his mother had sent a picture. Opening the image, he sucked in a breath to see Erin holding the pack’s newborn member. Her expression was soft with a gentle smile as she gazed at the infant.
Just the thought of her holding their first pup was almost too much to bear. His wolf huffed in agreement. Their mate was perfect, and she would be a terrific mother to their pups. But first, they had to clear up the mystery of her past.
Alexander frowned. He had been looking through records from ten years ago and still had not found a hint of what might have happened to her pack. Perhaps contacting other Wendigo pack leaders was the logical next step, but it was unlikely he would receive a reply. So far, none of his invitations to various gatherings had been acknowledged.
He was at a loss to find some way to bridge the gap of communication. Alexander was supposed to be King of Wolves, but packs were far more fragmented than others wanted to believe. Then there was the Werewolf Council, who refused to acknowledge any pack that didn’t adhere strictly to their ideals.
It had already caused several issues among more insular werewolf communities in Europe and Asia. Luckily, he had managed to build personal connections with them independently, seeing something of a truce and even earning recognition as their king and representative. However, it was clear his approach to those packs wasn’t going to work with the wendigo packs.
‘Maybe Mate could help?’ his wolf suggested.
That was certainly an idea. Erin could very well prove to be the bridge that finally opened up proper communication. She could explain her pack’s culture and maybe even introduce him to other packs, assuming hers had allies. However, given how her pack was destroyed, it was also clear they had enemies. That made learning about what happened ten years ago even more important.
Hopefully, Peregrin would be able to find answers. Of course, the fastest way would be to simply ask Erin, but he was hesitant to do so. He didn’t want to cause her any more pain than she had already endured. Everything, then, hinged on what his delta could uncover.
With a sigh, he turned his attention back to the task at hand, namely reducing the amount of paperwork on his desk. Alexander rubbed his chest, trying to fend off something that felt like heartburn. Tonight, he would dine with his luna and bask in her scent. His wolf settled in his mind with that promise. They could endure the next few hours with that goal in mind.
A knock on his door interrupted his progress some time later. He glanced at the clock with a frown, wondering who would have the gall to interrupt their alpha’s work. His wolf growled low, but he wasn’t sure of the reason until his visitor stepped in without permission.
“Hello, Alex,” the she-wolf grinned as she sauntered in.
Her hair had been dyed again. This time it was ginger. She thought changing it often kept her looking fresh and enticing, but the chemical smell made him gag. As usual, she was wearing a slinky, short dress that he supposed was pleasing enough. In the past, he liked them for their easy access for a quick round of s*x, but now it didn’t stir him at all. It was rather distasteful she would enter her alpha’s office dressed like she was ready to go out to a club.
“I didn’t give you permission to enter, Carmen,” Alexander frowned.
“Oh, I know,” she smiled. “Usually, you call for me long before now, so I know how tightly wound you are.”
Carmen slid around the desk and perched on the edge, stretching her toned legs. They had been shaved smooth, not an easy task for a werewolf. She leaned close, giving him a good view of her impressive breasts.
“You need a release. And here I am.”
Alexander struggled to control his wolf’s furious growls as its hackles rose. Trying to control his fury, he said, “That won’t be necessary.”
“Oh, I think it’s very necessary,” Carmen reached out to try to run her fingers through his hair. “I can feel the tension running through you.”
Alexander caught her hand, squeezing until she winced in pain. His wolf’s growl rumbled in his chest as it pressed forward. Still trying to rein it in, he said, “What you feel is my anger and disgust.”
He stood and pulled her toward the door as she yelped. For the first time, he sensed her fear, but it wasn’t nearly good enough. Opening the door, he threw her out into the hall.
“I’m only going to say this once, so remember it,” Alexander let his aura swirl around them. “I will never call you or need your services again. Get yourself into something appropriate, unless you plan on moving into a club permanently. Maybe someone there will have a use for your loose holes.”
He slammed the door closed and retreated to his office bathroom to wash off her scent. It made his skin crawl. Even worse was her pungent perfume that wafted around her like a skunk’s musk. How the hell did she stand it?
‘A better question is how you tolerated it for so long,’ his wolf growled.
‘Was it always that bad?’
‘Yes. You just didn’t care as long as you got what you wanted. Now, you finally see how she had been parading around her like a Primadonna.’
‘Is she really that bad?’
‘Maybe you should check the security cameras like our Beta suggested and find out.’
Yeah, maybe I should.
Another knock at the door interrupted him as he stepped out of the bathroom, still drying his hands. His wolf bristled but quickly relaxed. At least, whoever was behind it was not someone who would irritate him.
“Come in.”
“Is it safe?” Kaison asked with a grin as he peaked in before entering. “Your aura is all over the place. It feels like a bomb went off.”
“It very nearly did,” Alexander grumbled.
“Doesn’t have anything to do with a certain, disheveled she-wolf I passed in the hall?”
“Good guess.”
“You didn’t…”
“Of course not!” Alexander snapped.
Thank the Goddess, Kaison let out an uneasy breath. He could never stomach the thought of any wolf cheating on their mate. After meeting Erin, he definitely didn’t want the caring and gentle she-wolf to endure such pain and betrayal.
“Is that why you are here?” Alexander asked. “Were you worried I would actually stray?”
“No. I just spent an hour with your mate, and I wanted to see how you are faring,” Kaison grinned. “So, how is it?”
