“Were they following him?” He thought to himself.
“I don't think so. No one among werewolves knows about us.” Dray said.
Part of the advantages of being a hybrid was that he couldn't be smelled out if he chose to even though he could fish other wolves and Lycans out with his senses. And no werewolf knew about his existence, since all those he encountered didn't live to tell his story.
“Quick, let's go back.” he said, tightening his grip on Lyra. They started running in the direction of the house. Only this time, they were being chased by five werewolves in their human forms, from which he could only smell the scents of four of them.
“Who are they? Are they people from the orphanage?” Lyra quizzed while they were still running. Darion ignored her question as he concentrated on getting her to safety.
“They are f*****g walking on the rooftop” she yelled, fear taking over her body. He perked up and saw five different figures running from both sides of the building tops, but he couldn't figure them out in the dark. He knew he had to do something if he had to protect her.
On the other hand, he couldn't risk her seeing him transform.
“Let me out!” Dray exclaimed.
“No, I can't." he yelled at his wolf forgetting Lyra could hear him.
They were in the middle of a human street. He couldn't just transform. What if Lyra got scared of him and sees him as a monster. He didn't know how he was going to deal with that. He glared at his side and he saw the angry and dark look in the eyes of the werewolves and they getting closer to them.
He had to give in to his wolf if he wanted to save Lyra. It was the only way, even if she came to see him as a monster.
“Run, I will try to hold them off.” he said, letting go of her hand.
“What, no!” She stopped running, panting heavily.
“What the hell Lyra, just go dammit” he yelled at her.His veins visibly showing as his whole body tensed up. His dark self began to take control over him. She still stood her grounds.
He was about to transform, and he didn't want her to see him for who he was, a monster. Just when he was about to shout at her, they heard gunshots. The screeching of a car which stopped right in front of them.
“Get in!” The driver commanded. Without second thoughts, they both hopped into the car. Darion looked at the person behind the wheels and noticed Fabien looking all intense and furious. He kept taking shots out of the window. Darion looked out and the werewolves were no longer there. They had all disappeared.
“What were you thinking, walking out in the middle of the night?” Fabien looked at Lyra with an angry face.
“It's not her fault. I...”
“I wasn't f*****g talking to you” He roared at Darion.
“You are the cause of the dilemma to begin with, if it weren't for you, she wouldn't be out here.”
“Hey, I asked him to walk with me okay, and besides I am safe thanks to you, now can you cut it out!” This made Darion clench his teeth. She stood up for him but he was still mad.
Was it because he couldn't protect his own mate?
The short drive back home was a silent one. Fabien pulled in front of the house moments later and Lyra hopped out.
“Not a word to my father” she said and entered the house. Darion was next to get out. Before he entered the house, he turned to Fabien with a dark look.
“How did you know where to find us?” He asked. His eyes fixed intently on Fabien.
“I don't think that should matter to you”
Fabien said and walked away leaving Darion deep in thought. Now he definitely had to find out about what Fabien was hiding. And he could only do it while he stayed here. He entered the house and had a warm bath.
Meanwhile, back at the werewolves pack:
“Did you scare him off?” Alpha Akibrus, the werewolf pack alpha asked.
“No, he came to their rescue." One of the werewolves who attacked Lyra and Darion said.
“Why would he do that, we don't have much time!” he growled, making the werewolf flinch backwards.
“I don't know Alpha.” he said bowing his head to ascertain respect to his alpha.
“He better hope he had a good reason for what he did. What do you think?” Alpha Akibrus turned to look at his daughter who was seated beside him.
“Knowing him, I think he must have had a good reason for doing that.” she mumbled, trying to hide the hate she felt for her father. Whenever she looked at him, the only thing she saw was the man who wrecked her happiness because of rivalry.
“Alpha.” a pack warrior rushed in.
“Two young Lycans were apprehended while loitering around our territory.”
“Torture them and find out what they were after!” he spat. Anya looked at her father wide-eyed.
“Didn't he hear they were youngsters?” She thought to herself.
“Father, but they are only pups, they wouldn't induce any danger to anyone. He veered around with a fierce look on his face to look at his daughter.
“You have no say when it comes to Lycans” he said and walked away, leaving her alone as she clenched her hand against her thigh.
*****************
Darion was in his room half asleep when his door cracked open. He jerked up from his bed.
“Shuushuu...” Lyra put her hand on her lips, silencing him.
“What are you doing here,” he inquired with his face scrunched up, seeing as it was late and everyone was in bed. She noticed his tanned muscles and his flawless skin.
When Darion discovered what she was drooling over, he smirked.
“Like what you see?” He smirked, making her snap out of it.
"Don't act cocky with me. You have to tell me what that was all about. And don't you dare lie to me about it” Darion gawked at her, dropping the flirt.
“I have no idea.”
“Come on, those people were running on rooftops, and you can't tell me that is normal. And if I am right they were the same people you saw at the grocery shop. Your reaction was the same as that day.” She whisper yelled.
“You looked scared Darion.” she added softly and reached out to caress his cheeks.
“You don't want to know, trust me.”
“Try me.” she stubbornly said. He heaved a sigh.
“You know what your dad says about creatures out there, they are true.” Darion said, staring deep into her eyes to see her reaction.
“What, don't tell me he has gotten to you with his fantasies.” she forced laughter out of her mouth expecting him to join her with the laughter but that didn't happen.
“Like you said, they walked over rooftops, who does that?” he said, making her laughter turn into a frown and her hand dropped from his cheeks while she processed what he said.
“They are real Lyra.” He said leaning closer to her.
“How do you know about them?” She asked, her mind far from what he was thinking.
“I have seen them.” he muttered, slowly taking her hands in his.
“Where?” she inquired. He got up from the bed. “I will leave that for another day. It's late, you have to rest.” he asserted, walking towards the door and opening it. She was still in a daze after hearing that werewolves actually existed. Honestly, she didn't know what to believe, but she couldn't deny what she saw with her eyes.
Before walking out, she turned to him, “What did they want from us?” He shook his head. Truthfully he had no idea why or who they were after.
Meanwhile, in the room next to his. Fabien had been listening in on their conversation. He was so shocked when he heard Darion telling Lyra that werewolves existed.
“How did he know about them? He sure wasn't one since he couldn't smell any scent on him. Or was he also using the drug?” All this ran through Fabien's head, and he made it a point to find out everything about Darion.
