Chapter 1 - An Unexpected Arrival The sun hung low in the sky, bathing Willowbrook village in its warm orange glow as Ella Finchinger accompanied her fiancé Richard Hale to the stables. While the hustle of preparations for their impending wedding kept her busy, a sense of unease had taken root in her heart of late. As she rode side by side with Richard along the winding country lanes, Ella gazed absently at the rolling green fields, willing her mind to easier places. Upon arriving at the stables, Richard set about inspecting the horses and checking on supplies with the stable master Thomas, leaving Ella to her own devices. She wandered the side aisles, running her hands along the rough wooden beams as the familiar scents of hay and earth soothed her frayed nerves. Nearing the rear stalls, Ella heard hushed voices and paused, curiosity overcoming propriety. Peering around the corner, she glimpsed two figures engaged in intimate conversation. The first, she recognised as Thomas but the other was a stranger - a woman with raven hair tied neatly under her cap and tanned skin glowing softly in the dreary light. Though dressed modestly in trousers and braces like the stable boys, her curves and delicate features betrayed her femininity. As Ella watched unnoticed, the stranger's melodic laugh rang out, stirring something nameless deep within her. Their eyes met then and Ella froze, fearing her impudence had been discovered but the woman only regarded her with gentle intrigue, unafraid and unashamed. Heart racing, Ella backed away hastily and nearly collided with Richard. "There you are my dear. Are you quite well? You seem flushed," he remarked, concern lining his brow. Ella managed a weak smile, attributing her state to the stifling barn air. "I'm quite alright, the heat simply overwhelmed me for a moment. Might we depart soon?" Richard nodded, bidding Thomas farewell and ushering Ella to the horses. As they rode back in thoughtful silence, Ella's thoughts remained at the stables. Who was that mysterious woman and why did the memory of her lingering smile unsettle Ella so? She had never felt such intrigue towards another lady before and the novelty was disquieting. That night, disturbed dreams offered no relief, only piercing eyes and a comforting touch that set her soul alight with longing for what could never be. Come morn, Ella rose exhausted yet determination stirred within. She knew she must unravel this peculiar puzzle plaguing her mind and so made her way to the stables once more under pretense of selecting flowers for the gardens. Upon arrival, Ella spotted the object of her fascination mucking out stalls. Steeling her nerves, she approached and with polite introduction inquired, "Pardon me but I do not believe we were formerly acquainted. Might I have your name?" The woman paused her work and turned, a gentle smile warmly meeting her gaze. "Jenna. My name is Jenna Barstow." Kwentista @2023
