Chase’s POV
My heart nearly exploded when I heard growling and fighting. Id set off at a sprint from the house and shouted for any three fighters to follow me. I had held onto the phone call, hoping to find out what was happening before I sped off but when I heard Karma whine, I lost all sense of danger and transformed there and then. Dan and two of my dad’s fighters followed behind me. I don’t know how I found her, but I could sense her fear and sadness as I drew closer to the pack’s borders. Why was she over them?
When I got there, she was in a crumpled heap on the floor, crying her eyes out but what I noticed more was that she didn’t fully smell of herself. She smelt of someone else, a scent I couldn’t place but it smelled slightly familiar and she was wearing different clothes to when she had left this morning. She couldn’t speak, she was crying so hard. I couldn’t help her; she was such a strong person, so to be crying so much something bad must have happened but she looked perfectly fine on the outside, a little dirty and tired but unharmed. Which made me worry that something on a deeper level must have happened and this scared me more. I let her get on my back to carry her home. She clung to me so hard.
When we arrived home, I transformed back and popped on some shorts and a t shirt, whilst Dan escorted a still crying Karma to the pack doctor to be checked over. I headed over straight away to make sure she was ok and find out what had happened. When I got into the room, she looked at me and I smiled but she just looked at the floor, completely avoiding my gaze but sadness clear on her face. What was wrong with her?
“Karma, are you ok?” I asked, moving closer to her. She was sat on a bed in the doctor’s office, her feet dangling off the side. Her long hair flowing over her shoulders as she stared down at the floor, still not making eye contact with me. She didn’t answer but I saw her head slowly move from side to side to answer no. My heart broke seeing her like this, not knowing what I could do to make her feel better. “What happened?” I said, crouching down in front of her so our eyes could meet. I grabbed her hand and felt the usual sparks of the mate bond flow between us. Her eyes widened a little and she looked me in the eye this time, her mouth open. She then pulled back her hand sharply.
“We… we… aren’t mates…” She croaked, holding back tears. It took a second for me to understand what she was saying.
“What?” I asked, eyes narrowing through anger but not directed at her.
“It doesn’t matter what we feel…” she rubbed her hand where we had just felt the sparks. “I met my mate in the forest today. I don’t know who he was. He was just travelling through, I think. I grabbed him when he turned to leave, to thank him for saving me from the rogue who attacked me, and I felt the sparks.” She was talking so fast I couldn’t interject; my emotions were everywhere. A rogue? Not mates? Saved her? What?
“Kar…” I tried to interrupt, to get her to slow down, but she kept going.
“The rogue was a woman, someone who wasn’t well, she attacked me, and he stopped her before leaving. I tried to talk to him, and he told me to go home before running off. I felt the sparks though, I felt them...” Tears had begun to flow from her eyes again as she stopped rubbing her hands and put them in her lap.
“Karma, I don’t know who he was, but I know you’re my mate, I feel it, Ace feels it. It can’t be wrong.” She looked at me again and smiled sadly. I grabbed her shoulders, pleading with her. “Don’t you feel the sparks when we touch?”
“Sometimes, but not always…” She trailed off. Again, looking away from my face. I could tell this was hurting her as much as it was me. Ace was being defiant instead of sad right now though.
“Well, sometimes is more than not at all…” I stopped, thinking hard. “I don’t know what’s happening, but I know we are meant to be together. Maybe what you felt with him wasn’t the mate bond, you’re not 18 yet so maybe your wolf is confused.” I saw Karmas eyes shift from her usual pale blue, grey to a dark grey before settling back on their usual colour. Her wolf was reacting to my words. “What?” I asked, wanting to know.
“Kismet is confused.” Karma, bit her lip, holding something back. I ran my thumb over her lip.
“Please tell me!” I said, looking directly into her eyes which she now held.
“She knows what she felt but she knows you are our mate and wants you to be our mate and it’s confusing me more. I may not be 18 but I know what I felt.” The old Karma was back, the fire in her eyes as she glared at me, daring me to mock what she was saying. I smiled and kissed those lips. She looked shocked at how I could be so happy.
“There’s my Karma. You ARE my mate, no matter what you felt. I’m sure there is an explanation for this. I’ll talk to my mother and father.” I said finally. I saw Karma’s face finally settle. It still looked sad but there was a slight resolve there. She seemed to be communicating with Kismet more and more though.
“Are you sure?” She asked. “I love you Chase, but I’ve always felt you deserve someone else. Maybe that’s part of my problem? I think you need another alpha or at least a Beta to rule as our Luna. I would be happy just watching you grow up a strong Alpha, ruling the pack.” Karma said, a smile on her face as she imagined the future she thought about. I grabbed her shoulders again, forcing the picture out.
“Karma, stop!” I said harshly to her, not anger, but love and pain, making her eyes widen. “You’re perfect for me. No one else knows me as well as you. You’re strong, brave, caring and amazing. You help everyone and make everyone who knows you smile. Stop doubting yourself because of a stupid hierarchy that’s outdated now!” I saw a smile spread on her face but disappear before she could fully accept what I said. Suddenly she sprang forward and enveloped me in the biggest hug we had shared yet. She pulled away but I didn’t want her to. I grabbed her face and pulled her in for another kiss.
Karma’s POV
I was hugging Chase for his words, I knew Kismet, my wolf, felt the pull towards both guys but that was impossible. I knew though, that my heart wanted Chase, despite not feeling worthy of him. When he said those things, my heart grew even more for him. I was pulling away when I felt his hands on my face and him pull me in for a deep kiss. Then I felt them again, sparks. What was happening? How could I feel sparks for two different people, they were the same sparks that I had felt with the guy in the forest. Was I broken?
Not broken. Kismet answered.
The kiss was amazing again as Chase ran his hands up my back into my hair, he put pressure on my head to deepen the kiss. I grabbed his back and held him tight. I wanted this man to be mine forever, and Kismet did too, so where did the other guy even come into the equation?
Chase’s hand was back on my face as his other hand moved down to my hips and he moved me off the bed, so I was knelt with him on the floor. I pulled away from the kiss for breath bit his lips moved down my neck, sending tingles through me. His hands moved again, one in my hair, the other had moved to the bottom of my shirt. His eyes met mine, I could see his eyes asking for something. I nodded and he put his hands under my shirt and up my back, the skin contact felt amazing. Strong currents of pleasure making me shiver a little and I kissed him again as his hands moved around the front of me and floated over my bra. I gasped, but only because of the tingles and shivers running down my spine at the contact. Suddenly, Chase pulled away, panting heavily.
“I think we need to stop. Let’s go find the doctor so we can head home and talk to my parents.” He said, smiling at me. I groaned, I hadn’t wanted that to end, I felt complete with him but then Kismet growled in the back of my mind. She was still confused. I nodded and got up; Chase laughed. “Feel better?”
“Much better” I said, smiling. He had made me feel better, but I was still confused. I couldn’t change what had happened. “Oh!” I suddenly remembered. “We need to talk about the rogue, she was a woman and the guy sad she was ill.” Chase’s eyes glazed over.
“I’ve sent a link message to my dad, he’s expecting us. Don’t worry, well get to the end of it.”
We headed to Alpha George’s office. I was nervous but I didn’t know why, he was like an uncle to me. Chase knocked.
“Come in!”
“You got my message?” Chase asked as he walked into the office, I followed behind quietly. Alpha George was sat at his desk and nodded, but he wasn’t looking at Chase, he was staring at me, his eyes staring deep into my soul as if trying to answer a question I didn’t know I had asked. I looked at him back but worry started to take over. As I was about to speak, he cleared his throat.
“Are you ok Karma?” He asked, my throat clamped shut and I could only nod. What had I done? Why was he staring at me like that? “Good!”
“Dad, the rogue…” Chase started. Alpha George raised his hand and once again looked at me.
“Karma, you understand you left pack territory?” He asked me sternly. Again, I nodded. I hadn’t realised but he was right. “There are other wolves out there, who would happily take a young girl such as yourself to join their own pack or if they are a rogue then for their own gains and pleasure.” He looked concerned at me, but I knew what he was getting at.
“I didn’t realise I had wandered so far, I’m sorry, the rogue came out of nowhere…” I said, my head bowed.
“I understand, the rogue you speak of is actually under my care. She is ill and her caretaker slacked in his duties for a few minutes, so she escaped.” The Alpha said calmly, but my head shot up at the mention of the “caretaker”, that was him, the guy who caused me to question my future. My eyes met Alpha Georges eyes and he raised his eyebrows at me. I looked at Chase whose mouth was open in shock.
“Under our care? You’ve never spoken of them?” He said after a moment. His face screwed up in confusion.
“I didn’t think I needed to run everything past you Chase.” Alpha George laughed, heartily. Chase narrowed his eyes at this though.
“No… but as future Alpha, in less than a year, I’d have thought this would be something I’d need to know…” Chase said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“This isn’t something you will be taking over Chase, so you don’t need to worry about it. I will continue with this duty. The wolves in question are under MY care, not the packs.” Alpha George stared at Chase; his eyes locked onto his sons.
“It’s my business if they attack the future Luna!” Chase snarled.
“No, it’s my business and Karma shouldn’t have wandered over the borders, she would still be oblivious to the rogues. She’s fine, you’re fine and the pack is fine. It is a single rogue under my care and that’s the end of this conversation Chase.” Alpha George was starting to get angry as the pen he was holding was now tapping angrily on his notepad.
“Chase…” I finally spoke up, grabbing his arm. “He’s right, I’m fine, and clearly Alpha George knows about the rogue. He’s right, it was my fault for being stupid and crossing the border.” I looked at Alpha George. “I’ll be more careful next time.” Alpha George smiled at me but as much as Chase had calmed a little, I could still feel the tension in his arm.
“It’s not ok…” Chase said through gritted teeth. “This might be part of the reason you seem to think you have two mates.” At this I blanched and Alpha George clearly had the same reaction as I heard him drop the pen he was holding onto his desk. I glared into Chase’s eyes, and he looked at me questioningly. Why didn’t I want Alpha George to know this?
“What?” Alpha George asked a little too loudly, causing me to jump a little. I felt like I’d done something terribly wrong yet again. I opened my mouth to talk but before I could, Chase jumped in.
“Yeah, she met this caretaker, and she felt the mate sparks with him, but we all know she’s, my mate. I feel it, the pull and Ace is telling me we are mates, Karma feels them too, but she also felt them for this guy!” Alpha George seemed to be getting whiter and whiter and was still only staring at me.
“Is this true Karma?” Again, I felt like I was being reprimanded like a little child.
“Yes!” I said, lifting my head with confidence. After all I had done nothing wrong. “The guy saved me after the female wolf attacked me. I grabbed him to say thanks before he could run off and I felt the sparks as he turned to leave. I feel them with Chase too but not all the time…” Then I stopped, worried. “Is there something wrong with me?” I asked the last part quietly and looked at the floor. Alpha George stood up and headed towards me. I felt his hands on my shoulders and looked up to him. His face was softer now and colour had returned to his face.
“There is absolutely nothing wrong with you, you’re not 18 yet so your wolf might still be confused. The moon goddess gave us the gift of a mate, to complete us in every way. In the rare occasion that you would have two mates there would be an ultimate purpose for that, but I don’t believe that’s the case here. We all know how much you and Chase love each other. I just remembered something that happened when I was younger, but I don’t think that’s a story for today.” He smiled at me, and I felt like the usual relationship we had, more of the family relationship than of one of the packs in trouble. I smiled back and looked at Chase who seemed to have calmed down a little, he mouthed “told you so” behind his dads back, causing my smile to become wider.
“Thank you, Alpha George! I do love Chase with all my heart, obviously I have my doubts so maybe Kismet is confused.” I knew this wasn’t completely true though as Kismet was fully growling in my head now. She was still adamant both were my mates. I didn’t agree so shushed her in my mind.
“Don’t worry about the rogue, she’s no danger to us, stay away from the border. Chase, I’ll speak to you properly about the rogue once you become alpha but it’s not a conversation for today. Don’t worry about the mate thing, your wolf will figure it out when you hit 18. Enjoy your time before you become Alpha and Luna, together.” Alpha George smiled and walked back to his desk. Chase rolled his eyes and took my hand.
“Thanks dad!” Chase said before dragging me out of his dad’s office. I waved at Alpha George quickly before we closed his door. He smiled and waved back before picking his phone up.
