Part 8: The Final Goodbye
The ancient ruin was silent now, its walls echoing the final whispers of the broken curse. The iron cage lay in crumbled ruins, its magic dissipated into the air. Maha knelt beside Sarah, her newly freed form trembling, eyes filled with both gratitude and sorrow.
Zain cradled Sarah gently, his hands shaking as he brushed damp hair from her face. Her skin was cold, her breath shallow. She had endured unimaginable pain, and though the curse was broken, its shadow still lingered within her.
"You did it, Sarah," Maha whispered, her voice filled with emotion. "You saved me."
Sarah’s lips curved into a faint, exhausted smile. "You're… free."
But even as the words left her lips, the weight of the ritual still pressed upon her soul. The centuries of darkness that had been Maha's burden now lingered within her, their shadows clawing at the edges of her mind.
And Maha saw it.
---
"No," Maha said softly, her voice trembling. "This isn’t right. You shouldn’t carry my pain. Not for me."
Sarah opened her eyes slowly, their depths darkened by the weight she now bore. "I made a promise," she whispered. "I won’t let you suffer anymore."
Tears slipped down Maha’s cheeks as she reached for her sister's hand, cradling it tightly. "And I can’t let you suffer for me."
---
The silence between them was heavy, filled with more than just words. It was filled with centuries of loss, of love twisted by fate, of mistakes that could never be undone.
Maha’s gaze lifted to the sky beyond the ruins, where dawn threatened to break through the heavy clouds.
"I don't deserve to be free, Sarah," she whispered. "Not after everything I've done."
Sarah’s grip on her hand tightened weakly. "You deserve peace. Just like anyone else."
But Maha shook her head, sorrow shadowing her face. "Maybe I don't deserve peace. But I can give it to you."
---
The words hung in the air, heavy and final.
"What do you mean?" Sarah asked, her voice faint.
Maha looked at her, her eyes soft but determined. "I can take the pain back. I can carry it again. Forever. And it will end with me. No more suffering. No more pain. You’ll be free."
Sarah’s heart clenched. "But you’ve already suffered enough."
"And so have you," Maha replied, her voice trembling but firm. "And you shouldn’t have to bear my mistakes. I can’t let you."
---
The choice stood between them, heavy and cruel.
Sarah could keep the pain, carry it forever, and allow Maha her second chance at life.
Or Maha could take it back, embrace the darkness once more, and let her sister be free.
Zain's voice broke through the silence, his tone raw. "There has to be another way."
But Maha shook her head. "Some curses can't be broken without sacrifice."
---
Tears welled in Sarah’s eyes, her heart warring with her mind. She wanted her sister to have freedom, to feel love, to taste life after centuries of suffering. But she knew the cost. She could already feel it gnawing at her soul.
"I don’t want to lose you again," Sarah whispered.
Maha smiled softly, her gaze filled with love. "You never lost me. And you never will. I’ll always be with you."
---
Slowly, Maha stood, her hands trembling as she began to chant ancient words once more. This time, the magic was softer, more final. She placed her hand against Sarah’s heart, and Sarah gasped as the weight of the pain lifted from her chest, leaving warmth and light in its place.
Maha’s form shimmered, the shadows creeping back into her, wrapping around her soul. But this time, there was peace in her eyes. Acceptance.
"I forgive myself," she whispered. "And I forgive you."
Sarah reached for her, but Maha only smiled, a single tear tracing her cheek.
"Thank you," Maha said, her voice a breath of wind. "For everything."
---
And then, she was gone.
Not in pain. Not in darkness. But in light.
A final sacrifice. A final goodbye.
---
Sarah collapsed into Zain’s arms, her body weak but her heart lighter. The curse was over. The pain was gone. And though her sister was lost to her, she was free.
Finally, free.
---
The sun broke through the clouds then, a single beam of light falling across the ruin. Sarah closed her eyes, feeling the warmth, imagining her sister standing in that light, whole and at peace.
"I love you, Maha," she whispered, her voice trembling.
And in the gentle rustle of the wind, she thought she heard a voice.
"And I love you too."
