Chapter 2: goldencage

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs as the Bentley sped away from the Draven Enterprises tower, leaving the glittering Manhattan skyline behind. The signed contract felt like a brand on her skin, irrevocable, terrifying. Sophia’s words echoed in her mind, that damning photo burning behind her eyes. A woman who looked like her, wrapped in Alexander’s arms. Another surrogate? Another victim? “Stop thinking about it,” she whispered to herself, pressing her forehead against the cool window. Rain streaked the glass like tears she refused to shed. Leo needed her. One million dollars. That was all that mattered. The drive to the Hampton's stretched into eternity. When the car finally pulled through massive wrought-iron gates, Elena’s breath caught. Alexander’s estate wasn’t a house, it was a palace. Sprawling lawns manicured to perfection, a private beach whispering against the shore, and the main mansion rising like a modern fortress of glass and stone. Lights glowed warmly from within, but the luxury felt cold. Impersonal. A stern housekeeper in a crisp uniform met her at the grand entrance. “Mr. Draven has arranged the east wing for you, Miss Voss. Dinner will be served at eight. The medical team arrives tomorrow morning for preliminary procedures.” Elena nodded numbly, clutching her small duffel bag containing everything she owned: two changes of clothes, a worn photo of Leo, and her mother’s old locket. The east wing was a suite larger than her entire apartment: king-sized bed draped in silk, a marble bathroom with a soaking tub, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean. It screamed wealth. It screamed prison. She collapsed onto the bed, phone in hand, dialing the hospital. “Leo’s stable for now,” the nurse said gently. “But he keeps asking for you.” “I’ll visit soon,” Elena promised, voice thick. “Tell him I love him.” A sharp knock startled her. She opened the door to find Alexander standing there, still in his tailored suit, gray eyes stormy as the Atlantic outside. He filled the doorway, all dominance and restrained power. “We need to talk.” He didn’t wait for an invitation, stepping inside like he owned the air she breathed. Which, technically, he did now. Elena crossed her arms, trying to ignore how his presence made the room feel smaller. Hotter. “About Sophia? Or the woman in that photo she showed me?” His jaw clenched. “Sophia is my past. A mistake that nearly cost me everything. She’s not part of this contract.” “Then why was she there?” Elena challenged, her compassionate heart warring with raw fear. “And don’t lie to me, Mr. Draven. I may be desperate, but I’m not stupid.” Something flickered in his gaze respect? Amusement? He stepped closer, close enough that she caught the scent of cedar and expensive cologne. “Alexander,” he corrected, voice low and commanding. “You’ll call me Alexander. And the contract is clear: no questions about my life. You’re here to carry my heir. Nothing more.” Elena’s breath hitched as his eyes dropped to her lips for a fraction of a second. Tension crackled between them, thick and electric. Enemies, yes but the pull was undeniable. She hated how her body responded, warmth pooling despite the ice in his tone. “I want to see my brother,” she said, lifting her chin. “Tomorrow. The contract says full medical coverage for me, but it doesn't prohibit family visits.” His expression hardened. “Visits are supervised. My security team will accompany you. No exceptions.” “That’s ridiculous! He’s a child in my only family!” Alexander’s hand shot out, gripping her arm not painfully, but possessively. Heat seared through her sleeve. “You belong to this arrangement now, Elena. My estate. My rules. Break them, and the deal collapses. Leo gets nothing.” His thumb brushed her skin almost unconsciously, sending sparks racing up her arm. “But… I’ll make sure he’s transferred to a better facility. Private room. Top specialists. Consider it part of the advance.” Tears stung her eyes. Compassion cracked through his armor for a split second he looked almost human. Vulnerable. Then the mask slammed back into place. “Why are you doing this?” she whispered. “A man like you could have any woman. Why a contract? Why me?” His grip tightened briefly before he released her, turning toward the windows. The ocean crashed violently below, mirroring the storm in his eyes. “Because emotions destroy empires. I learned that the hard way. Sophia faked everything love, a pregnancy to steal secrets and nearly bankrupt me. Never again. This is business. Clean. Controlled.” Elena’s heart ached for the pain hidden beneath his ruthlessness. She wanted to reach out, to offer the kindness that came so naturally to her. Instead, she nodded. “Fine. Business. But I won’t be treated like a prisoner in this golden cage.” Dinner that evening was silent torture. They sat at opposite ends of a long mahogany table in a dining hall that could seat twenty. Candlelight flickered over crystal glasses and gourmet dishes Elena had only seen in magazines seared scallops, truffle risotto, wine older than she was. Alexander watched her over the rim of his glass, possessive intensity simmering. “You eat like you haven’t in days,” he observed, voice softer than before. “I haven’t,” she admitted, vulnerability slipping through. “Between jobs and hospital visits…” He set his fork down. “That ends now. You’re under my care. No more exhaustion. The medical team will ensure the pregnancy takes place.” The word “pregnancy” hung heavy, reminding her of what she’d agreed to. Her body, carrying his child. The thought sent a confusing mix of fear and forbidden heat through her. After dinner, he escorted her to her suite. At the door, he paused, towering over her. “Goodnight, Elena.” His hand brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, the touch surprisingly gentle. For a heartbeat, the ruthless billionaire vanished, replaced by a man haunted by ghosts. She closed the door, leaning against it, pulse racing. This was dangerous. He was dangerous. The next morning, the medical team arrived, efficient doctors drawing blood, running scans in a state-of-the-art clinic built into the estate. Alexander hovered nearby, arms crossed, watching every procedure with hawk-like focus. “You’re healthy,” the lead doctor confirmed. “We can proceed with the implantation protocol this week.” Elena nodded, but her phone buzzed with a hospital alert. “Leo’s fever is spiking. Possible infection. Urgent.” “I need to go,” she said, panic rising. “Now.” Alexander’s expression darkened. “The contract” “Screw the contract!” she cried, voice breaking. “He’s my brother. He’s dying!” For the first time, real conflict warred across his face. Then, surprisingly, he nodded. “My helicopter. We go together.” The flight to the city was tense. At the hospital, Alexander’s presence commanded attention, staff scurried, and doors opened. He stayed in the background as Elena rushed to Leo’s bedside, holding her brother’s small hand. “Ellie,” Leo whispered weakly, smiling despite the pain. “You came.” “Always,” she murmured, tears falling. Alexander watched from the doorway, something unreadable in his stormy eyes. Protective. Almost… jealous of the bond she shared so freely. As they prepared to leave, a nurse pulled Elena aside. “There’s a woman here asking about you. Red hair. Said she’s a family friend.” Sophia. Elena’s blood ran cold. She turned to find Alexander already moving, his body a shield as he stepped in front of her. But it was too late. Sophia appeared at the end of the corridor, flanked by two men in suits, her smile venomous. “Surprise visit, darling. I thought the new surrogate should know the full terms before it’s too late.” Alexander’s hand found Elena’s waist, pulling her flush against his side in a possessive grip that sent fire through her veins. “Leave. Now.” Sophia laughed. “Or what? Tell her the truth, Alexander the real reason you need this heir so desperately. Or should I?” Elena looked up at him, heart pounding. His face was a mask of rage and something darker than fear?
