The sun was bright, but the webs on the many trees give a very eerie feel to the forest. The trees were gigantic, like a scene from Jack in the beanstalk.
Akuji couldn’t shake the feeling that he was getting. It was like something was watching him. He held the rusty blade before him and with his other hand he held Canta’s hand. He was supposed to be calming her, but truthfully the action itself seemed to calm him. Moonlight trailed by her feet.
Fowler stepped silently across the ground in comparison to Akuji and Canta, who both seemed to be making a thousand noises per step. His eyes were scanning the many plants that they passed. None of them seemed like the one they were looking for. They passed what Akuji knew were bodies wrapped in spider webs. Were there animals or people? Akuji wondered as they passed them. It was hard to tell what they were. Their bodies looked as though they were sucked from the inside. His spine shivered as he recalled how spiders ate their prey. Would that be their fate if something happened, trapped in a web as back up food and sucked from the inside like a bowl of soup?
Fowler came to a halt, he raised his hand up for them to stop.
Was something wrong? Akuji thought were they here now?
Akuji looked around himself as he slightly released Canta’s hand. Moonlight growled, his head looking directly forward. Akuji’s body was hot as he looked in that direction, but he saw nothing there.
Danger!
Akuji heard in his head, his legs shook in response.
Danger!
Moonlight’s growling increased growing louder.
Where was the danger coming from?
He saw Fowler drawing an arrow from his quiver and holding his bow in front of him.
Danger!
Then Akuji heard it, the shuffling sound of many feet. It sounded like an army that was coming to them. Fowler signaled with his hand for danger. Two, Three, no four.
Akuji hands shivered as he struggled to hold the blade stable while Moonlight kept barking. The approaching sounds came to a halt.
Everything around was quiet.
Had they passed them? Was it over? Were they safe?
Akuji relaxed himself as he exhaled. He walked towards Fowler and as he was about to motion himself to speak.
Fowler shouted at him, “Don’t move!”
Fowler pushed Akuji away and what landed on the ground where he had been was a twisted looking spider with many eyes. It was missing a leg but its other moved quickly around.
Its many black soulless eyes seemed to lock onto Akuji. Its body was brown with an orange yellowish colour upon its many legs. Its body moved up and down and what Akuji perceived as drool dripped from its mouth as it seemed to snap.
Spider fledgling level 4 HP
Canta screamed as it tried to get closer to her. The spider hesitated when Moonlight took a defensive stance in front Canta.
The spider made a hissing noise as it tried to get back up the tree. Fowler drew his arrow and released it from his bow. It hit the spider who hissed back in pain.
“Canta get back,” Fowler called, but she was frozen in her own fear.
Akuji took a few breaths tighten his hand on the blade as he watched Fowler draw another arrow, he ran across to Canta. He saw the terror on her face as Moonlight snapped back at the spider. Moonlight was pushed away by the spider with its leg as it launched its web from its behind on him.
Before, however, it could continue, Fowler launched another arrow into its body. Akuji gripping his blade rushed forward and stabbed the rusty dagger into the spider. Killing it, it was dead now. He heard its last throbs he stabbed it again and again to be sure. Even though the bar on its health said zero.
Akuji heard an arrow whizzed passed his head. He turned to the direction of where the sound had connected. Another spider had collapsed onto the ground behind a few of the trees.
The spider was level one.
He heard Fowler drawing another arrow this time it whizzed in the air. Akuji looked up above him to see hanging on webs were more spiders. All of them level one. They shot their webs in response down to the ground.
“Canta?” Akuji called, but he looked back to find her not there. In a panic, he searched for her as webs were laid all over the ground, finding her trying to pry the web of Moonlight.
She wasn’t too far from him, but Akuji got a strange feeling that if he walked on these webs it would not be good. He avoided them as his eyes looked up to the sky.
They were so many of them even as Fowler shot them from off their webs and they fell to the ground in death.
Then Akuji heard singing coming from Canta, it was loud and powerful. His legs felt weaked as his body fell to the ground. What sounded like a mixed of complaints coming from the sky as the spiders landed on the ground on their backs seemingly paralysed. The only one that seemed unaffected by the singing was Fowler as he walked across towards him.
“Canta?” Akuji looked up at her face as he heard nothing else around him but her voice. Her singing wasn’t pleasant the words that came from her lips was like a condemnation and her face carried the same look. She wasn’t afraid, she looked completely angry.
Musical notes seemed to be flying around from her and the words that were used.
The words above her head said Kiss of death.
Was this an ability? Akuji tried to fight against the pressure, but his body would not allow him to get up. Around him all the spiders were dead. It was like they had burst from the inside.
Fowler was standing above him now and he seemed to be looking at the spiders. He spoke, but Akuji could not make out his words, they were all drowned out to him. He seemed to realise that Canta’s singing was affecting me.
He moved from within Akuji sight and within a few moments, the song had stopped. Akuji had control of his body again, but he was sore. He barely managed to turn himself over to hear Fowler shout.
“Akuji are you okay?!”
Crouched beside him was Fowler.
Akuji tried to form his first words, but his chest felt tight and the only word he got out was. “Canta?”
Fowler pointed his hand and Akuji follow it with his eye. Standing with Moonlight in her arms and a worried face was Canta.
“I am sorry, Akuji. I lost control. The village was right, I am dangerous.”
“No you’re not,” Fowler interjected before Akuji could speak.
“You save our lives,” Akuji said.
Canta smiled as she heard Moonlight panting in her arms.
“You plan to stay there forever, Akuji?”
Before he could respond Fowler took him up and rested him on his back.
“We should not have to worry for a while.”
“Hey.”
“Canta can you pick up Akuji’s dagger?”
“Sure.” she replied.
“Hold on tight Akuji. We are heading in the right direction and we should soon be there before nightfall.”
Akuji held an embarrassed look upon his face as he held on to the back of Fowler through the forest. His eyes looking upon the c*****e of what Canta had done. The spiders that lay on the ground were many, many more than what Fowler had said.
With her lips Canta had slain an army.
