The Undergrid

The city of Aetherm stretched above them like a living machine veins of neon light pulsing through towers of steel and glass. But down below, beneath the brilliant skyline, was a place few dared to go. The Undergrid. Lira tightened her cloak as they stepped into the elevator shaft that descended far below the main city levels. The air grew colder, thicker. The hum of energy faded until all that remained was silence and the echo of dripping water. Tesjjuak stared into the dark. “It feels… alive down here.” “Alive?” Lira frowned. He nodded slowly. “Like it’s watching us.” The elevator creaked to a stop, the gates opening to reveal a tunnel lined with flickering blue lights. Signs of old technology forgotten experiments, corroded wires, shattered glass tanks filled the corridor. On one of the walls, faded letters spelled out: “Project Eidolon – Sector 07.” Lira whispered, “This is where they made you.” Tesjjuak didn’t reply. His expression was unreadable, but his hands trembled ever so slightly. The Echoes of the Past As they moved deeper, faint holograms flickered to life projections from decades ago. Scientists speaking, machines whirring, data scrolling across cracked screens. “Subject synchronization: unstable.” “Neural fusion at 67%... memory degradation detected.” “Proceed with phase four.” Lira turned to Tesjjuak. “They tortured children here.” He clenched his fists. “Not children. Weapons.” A metallic clang echoed through the tunnels. Both froze. From the shadows ahead, something crawled out — a mechanical creature with a cracked skull mask and glowing red sensors. Its movements were jerky, but its presence was unmistakably hostile. “Eidolon’s security units,” Tesjjuak muttered. “They must still be active.” The machine hissed and lunged. Battle in the Dark Tesjjuak thrust his hand forward, psychic energy crackling around him. The air vibrated as the machine was lifted off the ground and smashed against the wall. Another two emerged from the darkness, blades snapping out of their arms. Lira spun her staff, light radiating from its tip. “I’ll take left!” Her strike sent a wave of blinding energy that sliced through one unit. Tesjjuak caught the other’s blade mid-swing, his aura flaring. He forced his energy through the metal, causing the machine to implode from within. When it was over, sparks rained across the floor. Lira exhaled, shaking her head. “How are they still running after all this time?” Tesjjuak glanced at the remains. “Because something’s still powering them.” They both looked down the corridor at the massive door pulsing with blue energy. The Vault of Minds The door opened slowly with a deep mechanical groan. Inside was a vast chamber filled with glass pods hundreds of them. Each one contained a sleeping human silhouette suspended in light. Lira’s eyes widened. “Oh my god… they’re still alive.” Tesjjuak stepped closer, his reflection appearing in one of the pods. The person inside looked almost identical to him. He staggered back. “No… that’s not possible.” A hologram shimmered to life above the central console. It was Kaelen. “If you are seeing this, Tesjjuak, you’ve reached the Neural Vault. What you see before you are failed Eidolon prototypes. Clones designed to contain fragments of your consciousness. Only one succeeded you.” “But the others remain linked. If the Neural Core is destroyed, all their minds will collapse including yours.” Lira whispered, horrified. “Destroying the Core will kill you?” Tesjjuak’s voice was cold. “Maybe that’s what has to happen.” Eidolon’s Arrival The air thickened. Every light in the room dimmed until only a faint red glow remained. A familiar voice echoed through the chamber. “You finally found it, Tesjjuak. Our birthplace.” Eidolon appeared no longer a shadow, but a solid form of black and crimson energy. His face was identical to Tesjjuak’s, only sharper, crueler. “You think you can destroy the Core? Foolish. It is us.” Lira raised her staff. “Stay back!” Eidolon laughed. “You can’t save him. You can’t even save yourself.” He snapped his fingers, and the pods began to c***k open. One by one, the clones inside awoke pale, trembling, and filled with the same psychic energy that pulsed through Tesjjuak. Tesjjuak gritted his teeth. “You turned them into soldiers.” “I turned them into versions of you. The perfect army.” The clones’ eyes lit up in unison white fire. The Shattered Mind Eidolon extended his hand, and Tesjjuak’s body froze. Pain shot through his head like shards of glass. Images flooded his vision lives that weren’t his, voices that weren’t his own. “Every fragment, every clone, every piece of what you are belongs to me,” Eidolon whispered. “You can’t fight what’s inside your own soul.” Lira shouted, “Tesjjuak! You have to push him out!” Tesjjuak’s aura flickered wildly. His voice was distorted. “I can’ the’s inside everything” Then, for a heartbeat, he saw his mother’s face again her smile, her voice. “You’re more than what they made you.” He clenched his fists, his energy surging. “You’re wrong, Eidolon. I am what they made me. But I choose what I become.” He unleashed a shockwave of psychic light so powerful it shattered half the pods. The clones screamed as their energy was absorbed back into Tesjjuak’s body. Eidolon stumbled backward, furious. “You can’t destroy me!” Tesjjuak’s eyes glowed white. “I don’t need to. I’ll contain you.” He thrust his palm forward, sealing Eidolon within himself once more but this time, by choice. Aftermath The chamber was silent again. Most of the pods were destroyed. Lira rushed to Tesjjuak’s side as he collapsed. She caught him, trembling. “Hey stay with me! What did you do?” He looked at her weakly. “I sealed him. But he’s still there… waiting.” Lira held him close. “Then we’ll face him together.” Outside, the Undergrid trembled. Somewhere deep below, the Neural Core pulsed one final time before going dark. For the first time in years, the city above slept peacefully. But in the shadows of Tesjjuak’s mind… Eidolon smiled. “You can’t cage a god forever.”
