Chapter Eight
Inside the room, I saw Mary, Boluwatiwi, and three other girls. Fear gripped my heart when I saw Mary sitting among the captives.
"Mary!" I cried as tears filled my eyes. "I thought you were dead. What happened? How did you end up here? Who did this to you?"
Mary gave me a weak smile.
"I am not dead," she said softly. "I was shot and taken to a hospital. The people behind all of this wanted everyone to believe I had died."
I shook my head.
"No. I saw you lying in a pool of blood. I followed the ambulance myself."
Mary sighed.
"After you left, the same people who shot me came to the hospital. They took me away before anyone could stop them. My wounds were treated, but instead of being allowed to go free, I was brought here."
I stared at her in disbelief.
The world was becoming darker and darker before my eyes.
Then I noticed Boluwatiwi among the captives.
"Boluwatiwi! Why are you here?"
She lowered her head sadly.
"I am here because you defended me. Jennifer and her friends blamed me for everything that happened. They wanted revenge."
Anger burned inside me.
At the same time, I began to understand how cruel people could be. Even those who appeared respectable could secretly be monsters.
I looked around the room.
Many frightened faces stared back at me.
Some were children.
Some were young women.
Others were elderly people.
Fear filled their eyes.
"Who are these people?" I asked.
Mary's face darkened.
"This place is filled with people who have been kidn*pped from different parts of the world. They are sold to different buyers. Some are purchased for rituals. Some are sold into s*****y. Others are used for terrible experiments."
A chill ran down my spine.
I clenched my fists.
How could people do such evil things to one another?
Before anyone could say another word, the door burst open.
Several armed guards entered.
"Everybody outside!" one of them shouted.
The captives quickly obeyed.
Nobody wanted to risk punishment.
We followed the guards out of the building.
The moment I stepped outside, I froze.
Several expensive cars were parked around a large open compound.
Well-dressed men sat at tables drinking and laughing as though they were attending a celebration.
"Why are we here?" I whispered.
Mary looked away.
"Tonight is auction night."
My heart nearly stopped.
I watched as dozens of captives were forced to kneel on the ground.
To those men, human beings were nothing more than merchandise.
One buyer stood and pointed toward a young girl.
"I want that one."
The girl immediately began crying.
Another buyer laughed.
The guards dragged people around as though they were animals.
I felt sick.
Then something happened that pushed me beyond my limit.
One of the wealthy men stood and said coldly,
"I need five fingers."
A young boy was dragged forward.
The boy screamed and begged for mercy.
Nobody listened.
Without hesitation, they cut off his fingers.
His scream echoed throughout the compound.
Blood stained the ground.
Moments later, he fainted from the pain.
The crowd remained silent.
I stared at the scene in horror.
Fear gripped my heart.
Anger consumed my soul.
My hands trembled.
My breathing became heavy.
The suffering around me felt unbearable.
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
"Why?" I whispered.
The pain of every captive seemed to flow directly into my heart.
"Why must innocent people suffer like this?"
Suddenly, something inside me awakened.
A powerful energy surged through my body.
The air around me became heavy.
The ground beneath my feet trembled.
At first, nobody noticed.
Then the shaking grew stronger.
"What is happening?" one of the guards shouted.
The earth shook violently.
People screamed.
Tables overturned.
Cars rocked from side to side.
Cracks spread across the ground.
The buyers jumped to their feet in terror.
"The earth is splitting apart!"
The trembling became even stronger.
Dust rose into the air.
Power exploded from within me.
I raised my hands toward the sky.
Tears streamed down my face.
My voice echoed across the compound.
"You have stolen innocent lives!"
Thunder crashed above us.
Dark clouds gathered.
Powerful winds swept through the area.
The buyers began running.
The guards dropped their weapons.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
Far away, a mountain erupted.
A massive column of fire and smoke rose into the heavens.
The volcanic eruption illuminated the night.
Everyone watched in horror.
I could feel a force far greater than myself moving through my body.
Then a brilliant blue light surrounded me.
The captives gasped.
The criminals fell to their knees.
The light became brighter and brighter.
When it finally faded, I had transformed.
My hair flowed like silver water.
Blue scales shimmered across my body.
My eyes glowed with supernatural power.
I had become a mermaid.
Fear spread across the compound.
Some people cried.
Others began praying.
I slowly opened my eyes.
Silence fell.
I looked directly at the criminals responsible for the suffering around me.
Their confidence had vanished.
Only fear remained.
"You kidn*pped innocent people," I said.
My voice sounded powerful and strange.
"You destroyed families."
"You sold human beings."
"You committed terrible crimes."
The criminals trembled.
I pointed at them.
"Confess."
A powerful wave of magic swept through the compound.
The criminals suddenly grabbed their phones.
One after another, they opened their social media accounts.
To their horror, they began confessing every crime they had committed.
Names were revealed.
Locations were exposed.
Secrets hidden for years came into the light.
The truth spread rapidly across the internet.
The world finally learned what had been happening.
Many of the criminals cried.
Others begged for mercy.
But the suffering they had caused could not be erased.
The earth continued shaking.
Several criminals attempted to escape.
None succeeded.
The power surrounding me blocked every path.
Soon, sirens echoed through the night.
Police vehicles arrived from every direction.
Officers stormed the compound.
The criminals were arrested.
The captives cried with relief.
Some fell to their knees.
Others hugged each other.
Families would finally receive answers.
Children would finally return home.
Mary smiled through her tears.
"We are free."
Boluwatiwi embraced me tightly.
"We survived."
For a brief moment, peace returned.
Then a familiar presence appeared beside me.
My guardian angel.
His expression was serious.
I frowned.
"Why do you look worried?"
He stared toward the horizon.
"Because this battle is only the beginning."
My heart sank.
"What do you mean?"
"The people you defeated tonight were merely servants."
A cold chill ran through my body.
"There is someone else?"
He nodded.
"A far greater enemy exists."
Lightning flashed across the sky.
"The true mastermind remains hidden."
I stared into the darkness.
For the first time since the battle ended, I felt fear.
Somewhere out there, a powerful enemy was watching.
Someone who knew about my powers.
Someone who had been waiting.
Far away, inside a dark chamber, a mysterious figure stood before a magical mirror.
The figure had watched everything.
A smile appeared on its face.
"So, Bamidele has finally awakened."
Dark energy filled the room.
The mirror shattered.
The figure laughed.
"Excellent."
The sound echoed through the darkness.
"The real war is about to begin."
Back at the compound, I looked toward the horizon.
The night wind blew across my face.
The captives had been rescued.
The criminals had been defeated.
But deep inside, I knew my journey was far from over.
This victory was only the first step.
A greater battle awaited me.
And when that battle came, the fate of countless lives would rest in my hands.
