Chapter Three I continued to practice my magic every day because I had a feeling that things would soon change and my mission would finally begin. Within a week, I had learned how to move objects, create fire, control the wind, cast illusions, and even use magic to create clothes. With Mary by my side, life became easier. She made sure we had food to eat and cared for me like an elder sister. For the first time in a long while, life felt peaceful. Everything was going smoothly until one day when Mary went to the city to get some supplies. She returned much later than usual, and I began to worry that something terrible had happened to her. "Mary, why are you so late?" I asked. She ignored me and silently entered the hut. I knew something was wrong, but I couldn't figure out what it was. The next day, Mary left again. This time, I secretly followed her. As she entered the city, I saw her talking to a strange man. Even from a distance, I noticed a snake tattoo on his arm. I immediately ran toward them, hoping to get a closer look, but before I could reach them, the man disappeared into the crowd. I was furious with myself for not being fast enough. "What happened? Who is that man?" I demanded angrily. "He's nobody," Mary replied. I knew she was lying. "If you want to keep secrets from me, then you can leave and never come back. I don't want someone who isn't honest with me!" I snapped before storming back to the hut. I waited for her to return. Deep down, I hoped that if I spoke calmly, she would finally tell me the truth. But she never came back. The next morning, I went into the city to search for her. What I found shattered my heart. Mary's lifeless body lay on the ground, surrounded by a crowd of people. I collapsed to my knees and burst into tears. I had lost another friend. Another person I cared about. The sister I never had. Crying uncontrollably, I followed the ambulance that carried her body away after someone called the police. At the hospital, doctors performed an autopsy. The results revealed that Mary had been killed by a gunshot. Even worse, a letter was found in her pocket. It contained only one chilling sentence: "You can't run away forever." Fear gripped my heart. I immediately ran back to the hut. "Selena, why is all this happening to me?" I cried. "Who was that man? What connection does he have to my parents?" But Selena did not answer. I had noticed that sometimes she appeared and spoke to me, while at other times she seemed completely absent. I still didn't know how to communicate with my guardian angel whenever I needed her. That night, I couldn't sleep. I blamed myself for everything. If only I hadn't gotten angry at Mary. If only I had been patient. Maybe she would still be alive. Maybe I wouldn't have lost another friend. Without Selena beside me, the hut felt emptier than ever. As the darkness of the night surrounded me, I lay awake, crying and searching for answers that never came. Chapter Four Loading…
