Chapter five

794 Words
The morning sun filtered softly through the sheer curtains of the hotel suite, casting a warm, golden glow over the tangled white sheets. Clara stirred against Jace’s chest, her fingers lightly tracing the strong, familiar line of his collarbone. For a few beautiful hours, the heavy labels and crushing expectations of their high-society lives hadn't mattered at all. There was no corporate pressure, no elite social status to maintain, and no frantic schedules dictated by their parents. There was only the quiet, rhythmic sound of Jace’s steady breathing, the soft scent of expensive linen, and the absolute safety of his arms wrapped securely around her. Jace shifted slightly, his grip tightening protectively around her bare waist as he automatically pulled her closer into his warmth, burying his face in her hair. He blinked his dark eyes open, the usual sharp, commanding focus of his professional gaze completely melting away into a look of pure, unadulterated adoration as he looked down at her. "Good morning," he murmured, his voice deep, raspy from sleep, and incredibly intimate as he leaned down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her forehead. "Good morning," Clara whispered, a genuine, content smile spreading across her face as she looked up into his eyes. She rested her cheek back against his bare chest, listening to his heartbeat and wishing she could freeze time forever. "I don't want to get up. I don't want to face the real world today." Jace chuckled softly, a low rumble beneath her ear, his fingers gently running through her dark hair, untangling the silky strands. "Then don't. Let the real world wait for once. We can just stay right here, lock the doors, and pretend nothing else exists outside of this room." As much as she wanted to believe him, reality was already tugging relentlessly at the edges of her mind. The golden bubble was beginning to thin. "I wish I could," Clara sighed softly, her expression turning slightly bittersweet as she sat up, pulling the sheets up to her chest. "But Ethan is expecting me at the Vance corporate office by noon to review some high-priority marketing data for the new luxury sector launch. If I’m even five minutes late, my father will start asking questions. He loves structure and perfection far too much." "Your father sounds like a tough man to please," Jace noted mildly, his tone entirely casual as he propped himself up on one elbow, watching her with a warm gaze. He didn't know anything about Victor Vance other than the fact that he was a strict, unyielding businessman who kept his children on a very tight leash. "My dad is the exact same way. If I miss a single morning briefing at the Sterling headquarters, he looks at me like I've personally disrupted the entire global market infrastructure." Clara laughed softly, shaking her head as she leaned back against the plush pillows. "I guess all powerful, billionaire businessmen share the exact same rigid personality traits. It’s absolutely exhausting to live up to." "It is," Jace agreed, his expression turning a bit more serious as he reached out, his thumb gently tracing the soft line of her jawline, locking his intense gaze into hers. "But as long as I have this as long as I have you to come back to when the day is done I can handle whatever pressure or expectations they throw at me. You are my peace, Clara." The absolute sincerity and raw depth in his voice made Clara’s heart swell with an emotion so fierce it terrified her. She leaned forward, catching his lips in a sweet, lingering kiss that felt like a quiet, unbreakable promise between them. They knew each other's full names, and they knew their respective families were major players in the city's elite corporate circle, but they had never once cross-referenced their parents' business dealings. To them, their last names were just words printed on corporate building signs and financial magazines. They were just two ordinary people madly in love, navigating the busy, high-profile demands of their glittering worlds. An hour later, the magical sanctuary of the suite was gone. Clara was fully dressed, looking once again like the elegant, untouchable eldest daughter of the Vance empire as she stepped out of the private hotel lobby and into the back of a waiting town car. A few minutes after that, Jace buttoned his charcoal vest, buckled his vintage grandfather watch, and prepared to step back into his role as the formidable, ruthless Sterling heir. They parted with soft smiles and warm promises for their next hidden meeting, completely blissful, deeply in love, and ready to face another ordinary week in their glittering worlds, totally unaware of the explosive puzzle pieces moving around them.
