XVII COULD HARDLY GET Martha out my head, and so I wrote her into the next few stories. All about a female genius detective who was able to solve mysteries almost without leaving her desk. The plots seemed to deal with their competition of a similarly gifted male detective who had offices across town. While the female detective was alluring and provocative and bubbly, the male detective was a bit sour on life and women and requisite social graces. Yet they kept running into each other in the first book, finally meeting to exchange their clues and together apprehending the criminal so the officials could arrest them. In the second book, they had an unofficial alliance and managed to resolve several unsolved "cold case" files the police had been baffled with. Between the two of them, the
