When Austin grabs the flimsy glass doors of the Spadina subway entrance and wrenches them open, a blast of heat and the sound of humanity rise up from underground. We hop the pay stations and descend the steps. The noise grows louder and louder but we don't see anyone until we've reached the landing. The floor and the seats of the station are filled with squatting mothers, screaming children, men with packs tied to backs, and women in battered polyester puff coats. A bedraggled middle aged lady clutching a bundle to her chest stands at the base of the stairs. She looks up at us. "Move along," she says gruffly. "This spot's taken."
