The Alpha

1642 Words
He had only been Alpha for about a year, his father choose to retire in favor of his only son. Luckily his father was highly respected so his claim came without challenge. The pack had watched him grow strong for twenty-five years and they trusted their previous Alpha, Alpha Leander. But he worried that not finding his mate made him vulnerable, wolves were not finding their fated mates as often as they used to. No one knew for sure why. Only about a quarter of the pack had true fated mates. He could choose a strong female from his own pack or possibly marry an alpha female from a neighboring pack; that would strengthen his early chiefdom for sure. “Good Morning!” Called out an eager guard as he stepped off the elevator. The Alpha nodded and continued towards the kitchen. The smell of bacon filled his nostrils the moment he’d stepped out of the shower today. The pack house was large enough to house several small apartments and a dozen guest rooms, so the main floor was always busy. There were several members sitting at various tables in the great hall. He stood still for a moment in the doorway between the dining hall and kitchen listening to everyone’s voices. “Ready to eat Alpha?” Said the old cook seeing him just then. She was elderly, but loved her place as a cook, and refused to retire just yet. Most of his father’s people retired in the last year making way for the next generation of wolves. He was personally glad that Zelda had chosen not to retire, he’d been eating her home cooked meals since his fangs popped up! “Everything you’ve got!”, Said the young Alpha as the old woman patted a stool next to the kitchen island. “Orange juice first young one.” She said with a smile. She poured a large pitcher with fresh juice she’d made just that morning. The alpha’s deep voice was pleasant to even an old wolf like her, he wasn’t bad on the eyes either. He was tall like most of his kind, with short black hair, a strong jaw, and gorgeous amber eyes. He was once a bit of a playboy in his teenage years, but the moment he woke up on his twenty-first birthday he only cared about one woman. He had dreamed of her every night since that day, yet for some reason she remained a mystery to him. He guzzled his orange juice in one long swig then set the mug back down on the island as he watched Zelda piling bacon, eggs, biscuits, and sausage gravy onto a huge platter. She handed him the massive plate then refilled his orange juice. As the Alpha took his meal to the dining hall all the pack members watched him walk to his seat, there was a table set up near the fireplace just for him and his primary family members. Right now, that only consisted of his sister, Lorelei. “Finally.” Snorted his sister from her seat. “I was starting to think you’d never get out of bed — Silvanas.” She added his given name just to annoy him. He did not go by that name, he never had. No one called him that, he’d chosen the name Silas for himself as a toddler and everyone respected that except for her. He didn’t know why he’d picked that name anymore except that he hated being called Silvanas since he he could remember. He father insisted the name was fit for an Alpha and meant “of the forest” But since he was just a tot the only name he used was Silas. It was probably made up by his childhood imagination, but he’d grown fond of it. His sister looked at him with her eyebrows raised waiting for him to snap back, but instead he just sat there motionless and silent. He stared her down with every bit of alpha essence he could muster. A frown spread across her face before finally she looked away and got to her feet. Ummmph! She got to her feet and stomped away causing others in the room to gawk, only she rivaled Silas in looks in this pack, but she was upset that he had become the new leader instead of her. She’d gotten it into her head at some point that she’d become Alpha since she was a year older, but tradition had never been broken. The chiefdom was passed down to the eldest son, always.. A scream could be heard in the distance, at first he thought maybe his sister had run upstairs to scream; but more screams filled the air. Everyone in the room jumped to their feet ready to fight whatever was causing this ruckus. Once outside the pack members found a bloody she-wolf on the ground. She was covered in blood from her hair to her boots, Silas rolled her seemingly lifeless body over to see her face and injuries. She wasn’t anyone from his pack, he new every pack member that lived on his land. There were slashes and bite marks on her torso and left leg. Certainly all of this blood couldn’t be her own? What had happened to her and why did she come here? “Did anyone see which way she came from?” Alpha Silas roared, he knelt down to check her heartbeat. There was none as he already knew, even in this commotion he should’ve been able to hear it. The pack members were too in shock to answer immediately, there were only whispers and muffled cries coming from the large crowd that had gathered. “I — I saw her come from the north woods, Alpha.” Cried a teenage girl with ginger hair. “Did she say anything before..” He stopped himself before saying she’d died, there were too many children about. He decided to mind link the whole pack.. “Pack members hear me! All omegas are to take the children and elderly to the pack house. Half of the warriors are to stand guard outside and the other half will go North with me. My Beta will be in charge until I return!” He didn’t use the mind link very often, he found it irritating and rude when around others. The crowd began to disperse immediately. Silas gently picked up the bloody girl and carried her towards their clinic. She was petite but pretty, who would do this to someone? He hated bully’s, he didn’t know her, but someone would pay for her life with theirs. He kicked open the door, startling the doctor inside. “Sorry Xanthe. I thought you’d be out with your family.” “I heard about the poor girl and ran over immediately. I may not be able to bring her back from the dead, but perhaps there’s a clue to who she is on her or something.” She’d said solemnly. The doctor was a she-wolf from another pack, she’d come here when she found her mate, the Gamma warrior Jared. He was a fine warrior and a trusted friend of his. He laid the girls body on a bed in the last and sixth room down the hall. She seemed peaceful at least, it almost looked like she was sleeping. Before the anger could bubble up he had to run back outside, he jogged towards the north woods where most of his warriors were already waiting. He ran past them and waved his arm so that they knew to follow. He followed the girls scent through the woods as he tried to remember what all was located on the other side. “Alpha her scent is spread out on multiple paths?” Said a warrior over the mind link. Silas tried to think, did she do this to hide from her aggressor or could this be a trap to split them up? “We’ll split into two groups, if the trail splits again further ahead we will regroup. No one is to go off alone, we don’t know how many enemies we have.” Silas replied. He smelled both trails and decided to take the stronger scented one letting half his team go the other way. All this running was making him overheat, but they never transformed in the daylight unless threatened and there was no threat for sure yet. Often werewolves would get shot during the day, mistaken for a wild wolf by farmers. The ran straight through the forest, he wondered if she’d come from the town. They spent very little time outside the pack lands, they grew most of their food and kept storage of pantry items on base that was replenished once every quarter. “We’ve got another body!” Called out a warrior. Silas made his way quickly to a clearing with a small creek running through it. The warriors were wading across a waist deep part of the creek where small feet could be seen sticking out of tall grass.. His gut twisted as he pictured the small child those tiny feet must belong to. Was it a little boy or a little girl? Was this the child of that young girl, she couldn’t have been much older than eighteen? This must be why her scent was split down two paths, she’d doubled back to hide the child.. Did she worry I would not help her? Did she think I could harm a small child? If she’d come straight there, she could still be alive! His fists tightened, his anger was taking over. His mind was racing with questions he knew he might never get answers to. He could feel his wolf aching to take control, but a small noise grabbed his attention..
