“Like I said, no one else can do this as far as I know and I would usually keep this a secret from you all, but as mentioned before, I really couldn’t care less about my secrets right now. It’s not like it will matter for long anyway.” I said that last part under my breath, but I knew they could hear me. Fortunately, no one commented.
We arrived at the pack house a few minutes later and I got out of the car. When I was a few feet away, I heard a car door open, so I looked back and saw Luke walking towards me.
“Is there something else, Luke?” I asked.
“There is actually,” he said, a blush rising from under his shirt, “Would you save a dance for me at the ball tomorrow night?”
I blushed in return and nodded my head, not trusting myself to speak for fear of all the butterflies in my belly flying out of my mouth. He smiled huge and gave me an awkward hug. But I’d gladly experience that hug 100 times over if I could. Man he smells so good. He’s so warm. He released me and gently kissed me on the cheek.
“Until tomorrow.” He said, and he turned to walk back to the car.
I woke up the next day to my parents attempting to sneak into my room to set up birthday decorations. This year’s decorations sounded like an avalanche of balloons. They had never been successful in their endeavors, but it was something I looked forward to every year. I rolled over and smiled at my parents.
“Happy birthday, sweetie!” my parents said as soon as they saw that they have, yet again, failed at their surprise. “We made eggs benedict!”
“You know, if you really wanted to surprise me for my birthday, it might be a good idea to wake up earlier than me.” I teased.
“But sleep is just too good! I never want to get out of bed in the morning,” my father said as he winked at my mother.
“Ew! Gross. Get out of here!” I yelled and smiled at them as I threw one of my pillows in their direction. They both laughed, but didn’t leave.
Eggs benedict was my absolute favorite breakfast and no one else could make a hollandaise sauce like my father.
“I'll be right out. Thank you.” I said as I smiled at them.
They both gave me a sandwich hug and then left the room. I quickly dressed and zoomed to the kitchen so I could enjoy the wonder of eggs benedict while it was still fresh and warm.
When I got to the table, my father put a plate of steaming food down in front of me and my mouth watered. Stars, I was going to miss them…
We enjoyed our breakfast as we chit-chatted about this and that. It was the perfect birthday breakfast, as it usually was. I really had the most loving parents. I couldn’t look at any other parents in the pack and picture that any of them were like my parents. It suddenly dawned on me that this was going to be the last birthday breakfast I was ever going to have with my parents. I knew they had hope that I’d shift tonight, but…I didn’t. Though, I wasn’t going to tell them that.
As my mother washed up the dishes, she looked over her shoulder and said, “I know you have a busy day today, but could you be back home a couple hours before the ball? You need time to get ready.”
I bit the side of my lip before I replied. “I don’t think it will take that much effort to make me up. I don’t really wanna try hard anyway. It’s not like I’ll find my mate. And even if I do, what would they think of me? They might just reject me on the spot.” I said with a deprecating tone.
I tried to not look up at my father. I knew what he would say. And I didn’t want to hear it. Not today. Not when I was going to be exiled for something that I couldn’t control. I could feel my father tense as he stared at me. But I still didn’t look up.
“Evelette, you never know. Maybe today…Maybe you will shift and everything will be alright.” My mother said as she trailed off. It looked like she was going to say something else, but she decided not to. Instead, she shared a meaningful look with my father. I looked at my plate as if it were the most interesting thing on this planet and decided to just finish up as quickly as possible and try to make the best of my birthday, my last full day here.
As I was drinking my orange juice, I felt a mind link open up.
“Evelette? Are you awake yet? Happy birthday! When are you coming over?? We need to get the birthday celebration started!”
I stiffened as I heard Clay’s voice through the mind link. “How did you know it was my birthday?” I asked.
“I’ll never tell! Just get over here!”
I chuckled at the over excited tone of Clay’s voice. I couldn’t, for the life of me, figure out why the group of Lycans wanted my attention, but I wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth, my time for fun was limited. I decided that I wasn’t going to spend it being overly careful and thinking too much.
“Give me a few to get ready and I’ll head over. Maybe we could take a tour of the pack as well. I gotta pretend that I am performing my duties….at least…” I responded.
I felt the impression of a laugh coming from him, which made me smile in turn.
“Yea, a tour of the pack would be good. It’s something to do, at least. Plus, if anyone happens to meet their mate while on the tour, their ball this evening will be more memorable.”
“Oh, I can only imagine how memorable that would be for them.” I responded, my tone dripping with innuendo.
“Alright, see you soon.” And Clay cut off the mind link.
I smiled to myself and got up to help clear away the dishes. My parents didn’t say anything more about the daunting timeline, for which I was grateful. After the kitchen was clean, I went to my room to get ready for the day. Strangely, I was excited about today, especially because I planned to temporarily forget that I wouldn’t be part of the pack soon. I really just wanted to experience my last day with no regrets. Once I was ready, I walked out of the house and came face to face with Rina.
“Evelette, wait. I need to ask you something,” She began. “Are you going to the Lycans? I need to go with you.” She said, almost breathless.
I eyed her suspiciously. “Why?”
She rolled her eyes and replied, “My father, you know, the Alpha of this pack, wants me to go with you so I can meet them before the ball. I’m sure he’s hopeful that one of them is my mate, and what a spectacle it would be if he could announce my engagement to a strong community.” She had a severely devious smile slapped across her perfect face. I hated how I could acknowledge how beautiful she was all while hating her entire being.
“Fine, you can come.” I said resolutely, “But I’m going to walk there. Think you can handle that?” I asked, as I eyed her short dress and high heels.
“What, no. We’re not walking. We’ll drive.” She said as she gestured to a sparkling red car. “I got a new car from my dad last week and I need to show up to the guest house looking important. What kind of message would that say if the princess of the pack they’re visiting showed up sweaty and dirty?”
Princess my a**. “Ugh, fine. You can drive.” I said in a huff as I changed my direction towards her car.
I opened the door and hopped into her car and went to buckle my seat belt. Before I could fasten the seatbelt properly, I noticed that Rina and I were not alone in her car…Her posse of brainless wits were in the backseat. Both of them were so wrapped around Rina that they even tried to look like her. Their hair was dyed bottle blonde and they both overlined their lips to give the illusion of Rina’s fuller lips, which looked ridiculous, in my opinion. Not to mention that their chests looked insane with the artificial stuffing, all lumpy and uneven. Why didn’t they just get a push up bra like Rina? I thought with exasperation.
But I turned around in my seat and resigned myself to this torturous car ride.
