Chapter 7

I had a feeling that the drive would be the low point of the day, but at least the ball was tonight and the guys had something planned for my birthday, though I was still clueless as to how they found out. I decided that I could stand a little sass from these princesses for a bit. About halfway through the drive, Rina started to slow the car down and I instantly knew this drive was going to be noteworthy. I prepared myself to address anything that was going to happen next. Rina was a terrible person and took any opportunity to make my life miserable. I should have just walked on my own. “You know,” she said as she looked at me, “my father said that if you don’t shift by midnight tonight, he’s going to send you away tomorrow. I guess he really doesn’t want a useless wolf in his pack, unable to shift. Spiritless.” I stiffened at the use of the nickname. “You should thank him, you know, because he was going to turn you out today. You should get on your knees and thank him.” She looked at me with malice in her eyes. A part of me was scared. The part that was scared was growing with every heartbeat. I knew that I shouldn’t be scared, though. I was much stronger than her, physically, and if I wanted to, I could pummel her and her minions and walk away without a scratch. It’s just…I don’t know. There was something anchoring me to the fear that I was powerless and weak. I decided to ignore her and look out the window. I wasn’t going to take the bait she clearly wanted me to nab. Not today. I suddenly felt a slack around my seatbelt. I shifted in my seat to look at my seatbelt and I noticed that minion A, Olivia, had unbuckled it. Then Rina decided to speed up the car again. But before I could react, Minion B, Mary, leaned over and opened the door and helped Rina push me out of the moving vehicle! I went tumbling onto the gravel road and scratched the arm and leg on the right side of my body. My head hit a large rock on the side of the road and I instantly felt a warm wetness dribble across my face and down my neck. Head wounds always bled terribly, I thought vaguely to myself. Once the momentum of the assault ceased and I stopped rolling, Rina stopped the car and shouted out her sunroof. “You will fit perfectly with the humans now, all dirty and scraped up. You’re welcome.” She laughed, then she took her seat, and drove off. I rolled to my back as she drove away. I was dazed and in pain and my head hurt something fierce. Those f*ckin b*tches. I should have known this would happen. How could I be so stupid? I laid there, at the side of the road, for an unknown amount of time. When I tried to get up, my vision blurred, I became light headed, and I felt like I wanted to throw up. Yup, feels like a concussion. Happy Birthday to me. I stayed there for a little while longer, but I was determined to get up. What kind of warrior would I be if a little head wound took me out? I slowly sat up and let myself adjust to the change in position. Then I felt my head and discovered a large goose egg above my right ear. When I pulled my hand away, my fingers were covered in blood, which was what I’d expected. I cannot wait until she gets what’s coming to her. I thought. Don’t worry, Evelette, I have a feeling that she will. I wish I could have come out to defend you. What a time that would have been, right? Selene, my wolf said to me. Think you can just walk up to her and punch her in the face the next time you see her? I wish. But I bet that would give me a one way ticket to exile right on the spot. F*ckin princess. I thought back. I slowly pushed myself up and winced at the throbbing in my head. I looked down at my body and noticed that my clothes were torn and blood from the head wound had started to drip down my neck and onto my shoulder. I knew that I needed to do something to fight back, I just didn’t know what. I wanted to be a warrior and warriors didn’t stand for sh*t like this. I wiped the dirt from my face and took a deep, steadying breath and started walking towards the guest house. My head pounded with every step I took, it was a relentless throb that echoed through my skull. The blood had dried on my skin and left behind a crusty layer that pulled on the edges of my wounds. The trip to the guest house seemed to stretch on for miles, though in reality, it was much shorter. With every passing minute, my anger simmered from a low simmer to a full boil. It wasn’t just about what Rina had done now - it was everything. The years of feeling inadequate, the bullying, the spiritless comments, it all churned inside of me and lit a fire in my chest. How dare she do this to me? How DARE she? The memory of the smug look on her face and the imagery of me smacking it off, kept me going. After some time, I saw the guest house loom in the distance. I knew that Clay and Luke would definitely have some questions when they saw me in such disarray, but as long as they let me wash up, I would be willing to tell them everything. I barely stepped onto the driveway when Luke, Clay and two others rushed out of the house. “Oh my Goddess, what happened to you?” Exclaimed Clay. “Who did this to you?” Asked Luke at the same time. “You’re bleeding.” Atlas said as he walked up behind the others. That was the first time I’d heard the man talk. His voice was not as deep as I had imagined, given his size, but it was pleasant nonetheless. When Atlas reached us, Luke and Clay stepped aside to let him get closer to me and I eyed him warely. “Atlas works at the hospital on our lands, so he wants to check you over.” Clay filled in when he noticed the look of wariness on my face. “Yes, that's fine, but can we go inside first?” I asked, fatigue heavy in my voice. “Oh yes, of course.” Luke said as he looked disheveled from running his hands through his blonde hair. “Should have brought you in immediately.” We walked into the house and I unceremoniously sat myself onto one of the kitchen stools. Atlas came over and started his examination. He started by having me move my limbs this way and that way. Then he moved onto the scrapes that I had on my right side and took out some alcohol wipes and clean gauze. He gently cleaned the areas and applied a soothing cream. “The scrapes are superficial. They should heal fast, probably by the end of the day.” Atlas declared. “I’d only be so lucky.” I mumbled. He furrowed his brows and looked at me. “What do you mean?” He asked. “What I mean is that I haven’t shifted for the first time yet, so my healing speed is not as fast as a normal she-wolf. I’ll probably have these scrapes for a bit longer” I responded. “It’s not anything I’m not used to. When I first started training with the warriors, I was often left with a wide array of colorful bruises.” Atlas raised his eyebrows but didn’t comment, though he did continue his review of my condition. He brushed my hair from my shoulder and followed the trail of drying blood to the pulsating lump above my ear. He gently felt the area and I winced. He moved onto examining my eyes and performed various tests and after a few more minutes, he was done with his examination. “Give it to me straight, doc, will I live?” I asked in a joking manner.
