Chapter 2

A loud knock on the door made me jump. My heart was already weak, my body still hurting from childbirth, and my baby crying softly in my arms. I stood frozen for a second. Another knock—harder this time. I looked around the room. I had nowhere else to go. No home. No husband. No protection. Only my newborn baby. I slowly opened the door. And what I saw made my stomach drop. A man was standing there. He was leaning against the wall, smelling of alcohol, his eyes half-open like he had been drinking all night. For a moment, I thought I had come to the wrong house. My legs stepped back automatically. “I’m sorry…” I whispered quickly. “Wrong house…” I turned slightly to leave— But then I heard a voice from inside. “Victoria?” My heart stopped. I turned back slowly. And there she was. Carol. My best friend. She was standing behind the man, her eyes wide in shock. “Victoria…?” she repeated. Then her eyes dropped to my baby. “You… you have a baby?” I nodded slowly, still confused, still shaking. “I… I didn’t know where else to go,” I said softly. The man beside her—her boyfriend—looked at me up and down like I was a stranger who didn’t belong there. Carol quickly stepped forward. “Michael, go inside,” she said to him firmly. He hesitated, then walked away slowly, still staring at me in a strange way. I didn’t like it. Something about him made me uncomfortable. Carol turned back to me immediately. “What happened?” she asked. That simple question broke me. My lips trembled. “Elvis…” I whispered. Carol’s face changed instantly. “Elvis? What did he do?” I swallowed hard. “He chased me out,” I said. “With my baby.” Her eyes widened. “What do you mean he chased you out? You just gave birth!” My voice broke. “He said the child is not his…” Carol gasped. “And Brianna… she was there.” That name made Carol freeze. “Brianna?” she repeated slowly. I nodded. “My stepsister.” For a moment, Carol didn’t speak. She just stared at me like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Then she pulled me inside quickly. “Come in. You are not standing outside like this,” she said firmly. I stepped inside slowly, my legs shaking. My baby made a small sound, and I held her closer. Carol closed the door behind me. The house suddenly felt safe… but only slightly. Because I knew I had nothing anymore. No home. No husband. No life. Just me and my child. Carol sat me down on a chair. “Tell me everything,” she said softly. And I did. I told her everything. From the moment I left the hospital alone… to seeing my suitcase outside… to Elvis and Brianna sitting in the house like I was nothing. Carol’s face changed the more I spoke. Shock. Anger. Pain. When I finished, she covered her mouth. “That man is evil,” she said quietly. I looked down. “I don’t even understand what I did wrong,” I whispered. Carol shook her head immediately. “You did nothing wrong.” Tears filled my eyes again. “I have nowhere to go,” I said. “I just need a place for my baby… just for a little while.” Carol stood up immediately. “No,” she said firmly. “You are staying here.” I looked at her in shock. “Carol, I will pay you back. I promise—” She cut me off. “You are not going anywhere,” she repeated. “You just gave birth. You need rest. Your baby needs you.” My throat tightened. I couldn’t even speak. For the first time in hours… I felt like I could breathe a little. Carol smiled softly and touched my shoulder. “That’s what friends are for.” I nodded slowly, tears still falling. But deep inside me, something stronger was forming. A promise. I will not stay broken. --- Later, Carol went out to buy food and baby supplies. I stayed inside the room with my newborn. The house was quiet. Too quiet. I rocked my baby gently, watching her tiny face. She was so small. So innocent. She didn’t know anything about pain yet. But I had already failed her on her first day. Tears slipped down my cheeks again. “I’m sorry,” I whispered. “I’m so sorry…” I kissed her forehead softly. “I will protect you. I promise.” Just then— A knock came at the door. I froze. My heart jumped. Another knock. This one slower. Heavier. I slowly stood up, holding my baby tighter. “Carol?” I called out softly. No answer. My chest tightened. The door creaked open. And a man walked in. It was Michael. Carol’s boyfriend. He didn’t knock again. He just entered. My body went cold instantly. “What do you want?” I asked quickly, stepping back. He looked at me slowly. His eyes were strange. Not kind. Not friendly. Something else. “I heard your story,” he said. I didn’t answer. I just held my baby closer. He smiled slightly. “You’re in a bad situation,” he continued. “Please leave,” I said firmly. “I don’t want trouble.” He ignored me. Instead, he took one step closer. My heart started beating faster. “I can help you,” he said. I frowned. “I don’t need your help.” His smile faded a little. “Everyone needs help,” he replied. Then he looked at my baby. And stayed there a little too long. Something inside me snapped. “Don’t look at my child like that,” I said sharply. He raised his hands slightly. “Relax,” he said. “I’m just talking.” But I didn’t trust him. Not even a little. “I will tell Carol,” I warned. That changed his expression instantly. For a second, he looked annoyed. Then he stepped back. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly. And walked out. The door closed behind him. I stood there shaking. My heart was racing. I looked down at my baby. And I felt fear. Not just for myself anymore. But for her. --- When Carol came back later, I didn’t tell her everything. I wanted to. But I couldn’t. I was too tired. Too broken. She placed food on the table. “Eat,” she said gently. “You need strength.” I nodded slowly and sat down. My hands were still shaking as I ate. Every bite felt heavy. But I forced myself. Because I had to survive. Not for me. For her. My baby made a soft sound in my arms, and I looked at her again. And I made a silent promise. No matter what happens… I will never let anyone destroy us again. Not Elvis. Not Brianna. Not anyone. This was not the end of my story. It was the beginning of my fight.
