484 Words
The Aftermath—And the Silence That Follows Claire’s eyes snapped open. The air was too sharp. Too cold. Too real. Her chest rose and fell quickly. Her fingers trembled against soft sheets. The scent of antiseptic. Machines beeping. A hospital. Her body was weak. Her mind numb. And then— A hand gripped hers tightly. Ryan. His eyes burning. His voice hoarse with relief. "Claire." Tears burned her eyes. Because she knew. She had woken up. She had left Ethan behind. And now? Now, she would have to live with it. The Weight of Her Decision Ryan didn’t let go. Didn’t stop watching her. Waiting for her to speak. But Claire? Claire couldn’t. Her chest ached. Her mind spun. Because Ethan was gone. The moment she chose to wake up… He disappeared. She had felt it. Felt his grip slip from her. Felt his entire existence fade away. Her throat tightened. Because Ethan was dying. And this time— There was nothing left to save him. Ryan’s voice was gentle. "You’re safe now," he whispered. Claire’s breath shook. Because wasn’t that the problem? She wasn’t sure if she wanted to be. Ethan’s Fate—And the Life Slipping Away Somewhere else— In another room. Another bed. A machine let out a long, piercing beep. A final breath was exhaled. And the world around Ethan Lancaster went silent. His body was motionless. His skin too pale. His heartbeat— Gone. For a moment, the world paused. And then— Nothing. Because he was gone. The man who had rewritten fate… The man who had refused to let go… Had finally lost. And now? Now, there was only emptiness. Ryan’s Relief—And Claire’s Guilt Ryan stroked her hair. "You're okay now," he murmured. But Claire? Claire felt cold. Because Ryan didn’t understand. Didn’t understand what she had just done. Didn’t understand that she had loved Ethan, too. Even after everything. Even after knowing what he had done. Even after knowing he had stolen her life. Some part of her had still belonged to him. And now? Now, Ethan was gone. And she would never hear him call her sweetheart again. Tears slipped down her cheeks. Ryan brushed them away. "It’s over," he promised. But Claire? Claire wasn’t sure if it would ever be over. The Dream That Shouldn’t Exist That night— Claire tried to sleep. Tried to pretend that everything was normal again. That she wasn’t haunted by the man she had left behind. But when she closed her eyes— She was somewhere else. Somewhere familiar. A dark room. A bed that wasn’t hers. A presence behind her. Warm. Unyielding. Her breath hitched. Because she knew. She wasn’t alone. Fingers ghosted over her waist. A low, familiar voice. Soft. Possessive. "Did you really think I’d leave you, sweetheart?" Claire’s lungs stalled. Because Ethan— Ethan was still here. (To Be Continued…)
