Episode 46: A World Without Claire

734 Words
A City That Doesn’t Know Her Name Ethan walked through the crowded streets. People laughed. Talked. Lived. Like nothing was wrong. Like they hadn’t just rewritten fate. Like Claire had never been born. His jaw tightened. His hands curled into fists. He stopped at a café. The one where he and Claire used to argue over coffee. The one where she would always steal his muffin and act innocent. He stepped inside. The barista smiled. "Hey there! What can I get you?" Ethan’s heart hammered. He took a breath. Then— "Do you remember a woman named Claire?" The barista frowned. "Claire? Sorry, doesn’t ring a bell." Ethan’s chest clenched. "Are you sure? About this tall—" "I’ve never met anyone named Claire." It wasn’t just her. No one in the café remembered. Not the staff. Not the customers. Not even the regulars who used to see them together every morning. She was gone. And not just gone. Erased. The Man Who Should Remember Ethan needed proof. Needed to know if anyone remembered her. There was only one person who might. Ryan. Ethan found him in the bookstore. Sitting in the same chair he always did. Reading books with unreadable expressions. Ethan’s voice was tight. Controlled. "Ryan." Ryan looked up. Smirked. "Well, if it isn’t my favorite time-traveling mess." Ethan’s stomach twisted. "Do you remember Claire?" Ryan’s smirk faded. His brow furrowed. "Claire?" Ethan’s breath hitched. Ryan stared at him. Confused. Blank. Empty. "Who’s Claire?" Ethan felt like he’d been punched. Ryan had been there. Ryan had fought with them. Ryan had almost died because of her. And now— Now he didn’t remember her at all. Not her name. Not her face. Not her existence. The universe had scrubbed her away. Completely. And Ethan? Ethan was the only one left who still knew she was real. The Truth He Can’t Escape Ethan left the bookstore in a daze. His thoughts spun. His body felt too heavy. He walked through the city— Seeing all the places Claire had once been. The park bench where she made him sit through her long book rants. The ramen shop where she always ordered spicy food and regretted it immediately. The rooftop where they had shared their first kiss. All of it was still here. But she wasn’t. And no one remembered. His breath shook. His hands trembled. Because suddenly— A terrifying thought hit him. What if he was forgetting too? What if this was how it started? What if one day— He woke up, and she was just gone from his mind? Like she had never existed. Like she had never mattered. And that? That was something he would never allow. The Desperate Search for Answers Ethan needed a plan. Needed a way to find her. If she still existed— If there was even a fragment of her left somewhere… He would tear the universe apart to get her back. And there was only one place that might have the answer. The Ashwick Estate. Again. The place where fate had first been broken. Where Ethan had come back to life. Where the hole in destiny had been ripped open. If there was still a chance to fix this— It would start there. The Mansion That Shouldn’t Exist The drive was long. The roads were empty. And when Ethan finally reached the Ashwick Estate— His breath caught. Because it was still there. The mansion stood tall. Abandoned. Unchanged. Like time had never touched it. Like it was waiting for him. Again. His hands curled into fists. He wasn’t afraid. Not anymore. He stepped forward— And the front doors swung open on their own. Welcoming him inside. And deep in the shadows— Something stirred. The Voice That Calls to Him The air inside was thick. Heavy with memories. Ethan moved through the halls, searching. Looking for anything. A sign. A clue. A way back to her. Then— A whisper. Soft. Distant. Familiar. "Ethan…" His lungs stalled. His blood froze. Because he knew that voice. It wasn’t the gods. It wasn’t fate. It was her. Claire. Somewhere— She was still here. And now? Now he was going to bring her back. No matter what it took. No matter what he had to destroy. Because he had made her a promise. And Ethan never broke his promises. To Be Continued…
