📖 Defying Destiny – Book 2, Episode 3

945 Words
The First Slip in Fate Claire sat at the café counter, pretending to focus on her book. But really? She was focused on him. Ethan. Sitting a few feet away, sipping his coffee, reading over some case files. Completely unaware that fate itself was playing with his soul. She had spent the last week being careful. Placing herself near him, making conversation seem natural. Not forcing anything. Not pushing too hard. And now? She was waiting. Waiting for him to feel it. Waiting for him to wonder. And then— "Claire?" The way he said her name froze her. Because it wasn’t just a casual greeting. It was hesitant. Searching. Like his mind didn’t recognize her… but his soul did. Her heart raced. She turned to him, keeping her expression neutral. "Yeah?" Ethan frowned slightly, like he was trying to work through a thought he didn’t understand. "I—never mind." He shook his head. Frustrated. "I thought I knew you from somewhere." Claire exhaled slowly. Because that? That was progress. The Unexplainable Feelings Later that night, Ethan sat alone in his apartment, staring at the ceiling. His mind wouldn’t shut up. Claire Weston. Why did that name feel… important? Why did her voice sound so familiar? He had met her only a week ago. Had only spoken to her twice. But every time she was near… Every time she said his name… Something inside him pulled. Like a memory just out of reach. Like a past he couldn’t touch. "What the hell is wrong with me?" he muttered. He had a life. A job. A mission. He didn’t have time for mysteries that didn’t make sense. But then— He closed his eyes. And for the briefest second… A flash of something. A woman’s laugh. A hand in his. The sound of his name whispered like a promise. His eyes snapped open. His chest tightened. Because that voice? That laughter? It was Claire’s. But he had never heard her laugh before. Not in this life. So why… Why did it feel like he had? Claire’s Next Move "You’re making progress." Ryan’s voice pulled Claire from her thoughts as they walked down the sidewalk together. She sighed. "Maybe. But it’s slow." Ryan raised an eyebrow. "What did you expect? A cinematic moment where he suddenly remembers everything?" Claire shot him a glare. "Honestly? That would’ve been great." Ryan laughed. But then, his expression sobered. "Claire, be careful." "I know—" "No, you don’t." Ryan grabbed her wrist, forcing her to stop. His voice was lower now. More serious. "The gods are already watching. If Ethan’s remembering things on his own, that means the cracks are forming. They won’t let that happen without fighting back." Claire swallowed. She already knew that. She just didn’t care. "Then I’ll fight back too." Ryan studied her for a moment. Then— "That’s what I was afraid of." The Moment That Changed Everything It happened by accident. At least, that’s what Claire told herself. She hadn’t planned for physical contact. She had been so careful. So precise. But fate had other plans. She was crossing the street when she heard the screech of brakes. A car turning too fast. Coming straight at her. Then— A hand grabbed her waist, pulling her back. She collided into someone solid, warm, familiar. Ethan. His arms wrapped around her, holding her against his chest. The world blurred. For a second, everything disappeared— The city. The cars. The noise. All that existed was them. And then— Ethan stiffened. His fingers dug into her waist. And when she looked up at him— His expression was shocked. Like something inside him had just shattered. His breathing was uneven. His grip on her tightened. "Claire." Her name. Soft. Disbelieving. Like he had said it a thousand times before. Claire’s chest ached. Because maybe—just maybe— He had. The First Memory Slipping Through Ethan sat in his car, gripping the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white. What the hell was happening to him? When he touched Claire— When he held her— A rush of something had hit him so hard he almost collapsed. It wasn’t just déjà vu. It wasn’t just a feeling. It was a memory. One he had never lived. But one that felt real. Flashes. 🔹 Claire sitting on a balcony, laughing. 🔹 Claire reaching for his hand in the dark. 🔹 Claire kissing him. His head pounded. Because these weren’t dreams. They were memories. His. And that was impossible. Because he had never met her before last week. Had he? A Dangerous Revelation "Something’s wrong with me." Ethan muttered it to himself as he paced his apartment. He needed answers. Now. And there was only one person who could give them to him. Claire. He grabbed his keys, exhaling sharply. But just as he turned to leave— The air shifted. The lights flickered. And suddenly— He wasn’t alone. A cold whisper filled the room. "Stop remembering, Ethan." His breath hitched. The temperature dropped. The shadows in the room stretched. Something unseen pressed against his chest. A force. A warning. "You weren’t supposed to remember." Then— A sharp pain in his head. A pressure so intense his vision blurred. And in that moment, Ethan understood. He wasn’t crazy. He wasn’t imagining things. Something—or someone—was trying to erase the truth. His hands trembled. His pulse thundered. Because if that was true… Then Claire had been right all along. And if he didn’t figure this out soon— He might lose her before he even found her. To Be Continued…
