📖 Defying Destiny – Book 2, Episode 4

981 Words
The Memory That Wouldn’t Fade Ethan’s pulse thundered as he gripped the bathroom sink, staring at his reflection in the mirror. Sweat clung to his skin. His mind was a war zone. Because it was happening again. Another memory. Uninvited. Unexplainable. 🔹 Claire in a white dress, reaching for his hand. 🔹 A whispered, “I do.” 🔹 His lips brushing against hers, a wedding ring glinting on her finger. Ethan’s breath caught. He stumbled back, heart racing. That wasn’t just a dream. It was real. Or at least, it felt too real. But it made no sense. Because Ethan Carter had never been married. Had he? The Urgency of Truth Claire sat across from Ryan at the café, gripping her coffee cup too tight. "Something’s happening." Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Care to be more specific?" Claire exhaled sharply. "Ethan’s remembering. On his own." Ryan’s expression darkened. "That’s not good." "Why not?" Ryan leaned forward. "Because if he remembers too fast, the gods will interfere. And we both know what that means." Claire’s stomach twisted. She did know. If fate saw Ethan as a threat… It would erase him. For good. Ryan studied her carefully. "You need to be smart about this. You can’t force him to remember, but you also can’t let him spiral. Find a way to guide him—before it’s too late." Claire swallowed the lump in her throat. Because for once, Ryan was right. And if she lost Ethan now… She wouldn’t survive it. Ethan’s Confrontation Ethan didn’t plan to seek Claire out. But his feet took him there anyway. Her apartment door loomed before him, his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides. He was done with coincidences. He needed answers. Now. Taking a deep breath, he knocked. A few moments later, the door swung open. Claire stood there, blinking in surprise. "Ethan?" His chest tightened at the way she said his name. Like it belonged to her. Like it was familiar. Like it was safe. But none of this was safe. And Ethan was tired of pretending. "We need to talk." Claire hesitated—just for a second. Then she nodded, stepping aside. "Come in." The Questions He Shouldn’t Be Asking Ethan barely waited for the door to close before turning to face her. "I need you to tell me the truth." Claire inhaled sharply. "What are you talking about?" "I’m talking about the memories." His voice was firm, demanding. "The ones I’m not supposed to have." Claire’s lips parted slightly. She didn’t deny it. She didn’t laugh it off. She just… watched him. That alone sent a chill down his spine. "Ethan—" "I see things," he cut in, stepping closer. "Things that don’t make sense. I hear your voice in my head before I even met you. I dream about you like I’ve known you forever." Her breath hitched. "You don’t understand—" "Then make me understand!" His voice came out rough. Desperate. He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "Tell me why it feels like I already love you." Claire’s eyes widened. Something shattered between them. Because he had said it. The truth. He felt it. He didn’t know why. But he felt it. And now, she had no choice but to answer. The Risk of Telling the Truth Claire’s hands trembled as she backed up, her heart hammering in her chest. "Ethan, you need to slow down—" "No." He took another step forward. "Not this time." She saw it in his eyes. The storm. The realization. The truth clawing at his mind. If she told him everything now, he would remember all at once. And if he did? The gods would intervene. She had to be careful. "I swear, I’ll tell you everything," she whispered. "But not yet." Ethan clenched his jaw. "Why not?" "Because it’s not safe." He scoffed, running a hand down his face. "Safe? What the hell are you talking about?" She hesitated. "You have to trust me." Ethan’s eyes darkened. "That’s the problem, Claire." He exhaled sharply. "I already do." Her stomach twisted painfully. Because that? That meant she was running out of time. The Gods Strike Back That night, Ethan’s dreams were different. Not flashes. Not fragments. But something deeper. Something real. 🔹 Claire crying in his arms. 🔹 A whispered “Don’t let go.” 🔹 A cold voice in the darkness. "He was never meant to survive." Ethan jolted awake, gasping for air. His room was wrong. The walls shifted. The shadows moved. And then— A whisper. Not his own. Not Claire’s. Something else. "You were never supposed to love her." Ethan’s blood ran cold. Because he finally understood. This wasn’t just about memories. This was about fate itself. Something didn’t want him to remember. And now? It was trying to stop him. The Choice That Changed Everything Ethan didn’t hesitate. He grabbed his keys, his phone— And went straight to Claire. Because if the universe was trying to keep them apart? Then that meant they were meant to be together. He reached her apartment in record time, pounding on the door. Claire opened it, her eyes widening. "Ethan?" He didn’t wait. He didn’t think. He stepped inside— And kissed her. Deep. Desperate. Like something inside him had been aching for this moment his entire life. Claire let out a small gasp—then melted into him. And the second their lips touched— The world cracked. Time shifted. And Ethan’s memories came flooding back. 🔹 Their wedding. 🔹 Their love. 🔹 Their death. All of it. All at once. His eyes snapped open. His breath hitched. "Claire." A name he had said a thousand times before. Now, with the weight of a thousand memories. And Claire? Tears welled in her eyes. "Ethan." Because finally— Finally— He remembered. To Be Continued…
