📖 Defying Destiny – Book 2, Episode 6

858 Words
The Arrival of the Gods The parking lot was silent. Too silent. The streetlights flickered, casting unnatural shadows across the pavement. And then— A figure stepped forward. Claire’s breath hitched. This wasn’t just a presence. This wasn’t just a whisper in the dark. This was them. The gods. The ones who had been rewriting their existence. The ones who had erased Ethan once before. Now, they were here. In the flesh. And they were watching. "You should not exist," the voice came, smooth as silk, cold as death. Ethan clenched his fists. "Yeah? Well, too bad." A flicker of amusement crossed the god’s face. "Defiant, as always." Ryan swore under his breath. "We don’t have time for this," he muttered. "We need to go—" But before he could move, the air itself shifted. And suddenly— Ryan wasn’t there. The Vanishing Act "Ryan!" Claire gasped, spinning around. Gone. No sound. No trace. Just… gone. She turned back to the god, heart hammering. "Where is he?!" The god tilted its head, as if amused by her distress. "He was never meant to be here." A chill ran down her spine. Ethan stepped forward, his fury barely contained. "Bring him back." The god smiled. "Make me." And then— The ground cracked beneath them. A force slammed into Ethan, sending him flying backward. Claire barely had time to react before the god’s cold fingers wrapped around her throat. She choked, struggling, but the god leaned in close. "You do not belong together. The universe itself rejects you." Darkness crept at the edges of her vision. But Claire? Claire refused to break. "Then the universe… can go to hell." And she struck. The Fire Awakens She didn’t know how she did it. Maybe it was instinct. Maybe it was fate’s mistake. But the moment Claire’s hand touched the god’s skin— It burned. A pulse of energy exploded from her fingertips. The god hissed, recoiling. Claire stumbled back, gasping for air. Ethan caught her before she could fall, his heart pounding. "What the hell was that?" She didn’t know. But the god? The god looked at her with something new in its expression. Something almost like… Fear. And then— It vanished. Just like Ryan had. The silence that followed was deafening. The Realization Claire’s hands shook. Ethan pulled her close, pressing a hand to her cheek. "Claire, talk to me. Are you okay?" She nodded, but she didn’t feel okay. She felt changed. Like something inside her had just shifted. Like she had power she wasn’t supposed to have. Ethan exhaled sharply. "They’re playing with us. Taking Ryan, testing you." His grip on her tightened. "We need to get to the Ashwick Estate. Now." Claire met his gaze. She saw determination. She saw fear. But more than that— She saw love. And that? That gave her the strength to keep moving. "Let’s go." The Road to Ashwick They drove through the night. The world felt wrong. Like something was watching. Like something was waiting. Ethan’s hands were tense on the steering wheel. "When we get there, what do we do?" Claire swallowed. "We find the loophole Ryan mentioned. We figure out how to rewrite fate." Ethan nodded. But neither of them said what they were both thinking. What if they were too late? The Ghosts of the Past The Ashwick Estate loomed in the darkness, forgotten by time. The place where everything had started. Where their first life ended. Claire shivered as they stepped inside. Dust covered the wooden floors. The air smelled like history and heartbreak. Ethan’s fingers brushed against hers. "Stay close." She nodded. Then— A whisper. Not from the gods. But from the house itself. "You came back." Claire’s breath caught. Because that voice? It was Ryan. The Truth at Last They followed the voice deeper into the house. And then— There he was. Ryan. Standing in the middle of the grand hall, alive but not. His form flickered, like he was barely holding onto reality. Claire rushed forward. "Ryan!" He turned to them, a sad smile on his face. "Took you long enough." Ethan exhaled sharply. "What the hell happened to you?" Ryan’s eyes darkened. "They took me. But they couldn’t erase me completely. I hid… here." Claire’s stomach twisted. "Why?" Ryan sighed. "Because this place is where it all started. And this is where it has to end." Ethan narrowed his eyes. "You mean the loophole." Ryan nodded. "Yes. But you’re not going to like it." Claire’s heart pounded. "What is it?" Ryan looked between them, his expression heavy. Then— "One of you has to stay behind." Silence. Cold, suffocating silence. Then Ethan shook his head. "No. There has to be another way." Ryan’s voice was calm. "There isn’t." Claire’s breath hitched. Because she saw it in Ryan’s eyes. The truth. The cost. The gods weren’t just going to let them rewrite fate. They wanted a sacrifice. And now, Ethan and Claire had to decide. Who would stay? Who would go? And could love survive when one of them had to be left behind? To Be Continued…
