Chapter 2

Brenda "Love is not just talk, it's action!" I was trying my best job hunting around town. There was not much to offer in this small town. Not like there had been out over in New York City. I was willing to take whatever job that I could get at this point. My funds were starting to run really low for me. I walked around downtown. It was a nice summer day out at least. The sun was shimmering brightly. The warm sun was beating on my skin. Maybe later I might pack up a picnic and head to the beach for the afternoon. That sounded promising to turn this day around. I was circling the ads in the paper for jobs that were near this area. I stopped in Rebecca's Bakery. I had been coming to this place since I was a kid. My friends mother Rebecca owned it. Every year my mother had bought my birthday cakes from this little bakery in town. Rebecca's daughter, Theresa was one of my close friends. She had been the co-head cheerleader alongside of me during our high school days. I last heard on f******k that Theresa married a car dealer out in Chicago. She was happy as well as had nearly ten kids about now. She always wanted a huge family. I was happy for her. "Brenda? Brenda Vance is that you dear?" someone exclaims when I walk in the bakery as the door dings. "Sure is" I say as I turn around to see who it was. ♥☆♥☆♥ Before I could tell a thing whoever they were grabs me and hugs me in a death grip. Laughing with joy. "Your mother told me you were back in town! It is true than!" exclaims the woman. I pull back to see who was greeting me warmly. It was none other than Rebecca. Mrs. Hanson. The owner of this place. "How are you?" I ask her. "I am getting ready to go on a trip out to Chicago to see Theresa and the grandkids soon here. I hear you are looking for a job?" she wonders. As she returns back behind the counter. I nod as I began to look at the yummy cupcakes. "I am" I tell her. "We are hiring. I will be gone often this summer. Because Theresa adopted a kid overseas. And they are flying out to pick up the kid. So, she needs me to stay with the kids" explains her mother. "Wow she is adopting?" I mutter. Her mother nods. "So, what do you say? Would you like to work here?" offers her mother. "Would I? I would love to" I say as I nod yes. "I hired one other girl named Marie. She is new in town. Sweet girl. Shy. I am sure you both will get along while I am away. I am so thrilled! Come to the back office. Richard is in! I am sure he would love to say hello" she brags as she lets me come to the back. I say hi to Mr. Hanson who was in the back at the desk. "Welcome back home there Miss. Vance! The rumors are true!" laughs Richard as he greets me with a warm hug. "Good to be back" I tell him with a smile. "I found another girl to watch over the place" announces Mrs. Hanson. "Oh, who is that?" asks Mr. Hanson. He looks up from his papers. "I just hired Brenda!" says Mrs. Hanson happily. She beams a happy smile. "Wonderful! I will draw up the paper work for you! When can you start?" he asks me. "Any time you need me" I say. "My hours are flexible to" I tell him. "Wonderful good to hear" he replies as he nods while logging in on his lap top. He prints out papers. Hands them to me to fill out. I began to read them over while he chats with Mrs. Hanson. As she the leave the room I finish filling out the paper work in no time. Then Mrs. Hanson comes back in. She has a cupcake in her hands. She hands one over to me as she flashes me a smile brightly. I grin as I take it. "What is this for?" I wonder. "Welcome to the team! I know these strawberries and cream are your favorite kind" she tells me. "Your mother always ordered the cakes that way" "Thank you. Can I pay you for this?" I offer as I go to dig in my purse to pay for the cupcake. "Oh no. This is a little gift" she promises me. She shakes her head. "Well thank you so much" I giggle. I get up to head out. "I have filled out everything. There you go" "Can I get a copy of your id for the files?" she reminds me. "Oh sure. Yes" I ramble out. I dig in my purse with the cupcake in my other hand. Than I hand her my id from my wallet. She heads out of the room. I notice something hanging there on the wall. ♥☆♥☆♥ It was a photo of Aaron smiling, standing with Mr. and Mrs. Hanson. The year was not on the photo. But he looked as handsome as ever. My eyes were glued to the photo. I see an autograph on the photo. I notice Aaron was in dress pants. Wearing a Christmas shirt. He must have been here for the holidays at some point in time. The autograph read "Merry Christmas. I hope that Phantom Software will help your computer systems all year long" "Phantom??" I ramble out to myself. He knew that my favorite movie had been Phantom of the Opera. He once took me to see the play for my birthday. Back when we were nearly seniors in high school. So, he named his company after something I loved? That did not have to mean a thing. Maybe that was just what came to his mind was all? Maybe I was reading to much into it was all. I shake my head as I sigh. "Aaron? Oh, he visits us now and then when he is in town" Mrs. Hanson tells me when she comes back in the office. She spots me looking at the photo. "Oh" is all I can mutter. "Aaron is such a great guy. I bought his software back when it had just come out. His business grew fast" brags Mrs. Hanson. "I see" I nod. "Were you two best friends right? You hung out a lot in school" asks Mrs. Hanson. "We used to be. Long ago. We lost touch and I moved to New York. I have not seen him since high school" I say softly to her. "Darn shame. Who knows maybe when he breezes back in town one of these days you two could reconnect" she replies thoughtfully. I shake my head. "We are two worlds apart. It is past over with" I tell her. "I am fine with it" "I look forward to seeing you here. I will call when I have your work hours ready to start here" she promises me with a smile. "Great" I say happily as I nod my head. "See you very soon" I tell her before I leave. ♥☆♥☆♥ I could not wait to tell mother the good news. My life was getting back on track. I had a job at least. Then my own place would be next on the list. Though mother told me that I could redo my bedroom. And that I did not have to leave this place any time soon. It was just going to be better for me not to have to look out the window to where the boy next door once lived. The boy who once broke my heart. I needed to break free of Aaron once and for all. Maybe that was why I came back? To get over him. Say my good-bye to our past. I smile as I bite into my cupcake. I get into my car. Throw my purse on my seat. Then speed off. The wind whips in my hair as a country song begins to croon on my speakers. I was not that into country music. But it was alright for now. Something was coming in. I had no idea where my cd's were packed up at. I had a lot of my stuff in a storage unit for the time being. Until I could move it all into my own place. I pull in the drive way at home. Than I head into tell mother the good news. I text my sister letting her know I just got a job. I polish off the last of my cupcake. Than grab the mail for my mother. I get an invite to my sister's wedding. She sure works fast. I open mine. The cards were fancy. Lovely lettering. I had a choice between the chicken or fish. A plus one or zero. I would be a plus zero of course. No one was going to be on a date with me at the wedding. I was busy working on myself. "Mother? We got the wedding invites today! Guess what else? I got a job" I brag happily as I come inside the house. Mother was not in the kitchen were she normally was at. I look then see her in the back yard working on the garden in the back. Every summer mother and dad grew a little garden of veggies in the back. Nothing big. Just cucumbers. Tomatoes. You know petty things. She loved growing flowers to in the back yard. She had some lovely large sunflowers that rested along the fence wall. I loved mother's garden. We had an old hammock in the back you could sit and read while you relaxed out in the back yard. I rush to the back to tell her the great news. She had on her sun hat. She was wearing capri shorts. And a stripe tank top. She wore sunglasses for her eyes as she worked in the garden while wearing gloves to dig in the dirt. ♥☆♥☆♥ "Mom I have the best news!" I exclaim to her joyfully. She looks up finally. "What is that dear?" she asks me as she pulls out her headphones from her ears. She had music playing from her iPhone. "I have good news" I say again repeating myself. "Do tell" she says with a smile. "I got a job today" I tell her happily. "So, you are not going back to New York?" she wonders. I shake my head. "No mother, I already told you that I was not" I sigh. "I have an offer from Mrs. Hanson. I guess that Theresa is adopting another kid. So, she needs help in Chicago. So, Mrs. Hanson needs help in the bakery while she is away. She offered me a job" "Oh, that is good news! I am happy for you" says mother with a grin. "You do not look that happy for me" I sigh. "I am worried is all. You loved New York. You were so excited about it and all" she mutters. "New York was fun, but this is where I am meant to be. Back home!" I brightly tell her with a fake promise. "Here this will cheer you up" I say as I hand her, her wedding invite from Melody. "The wedding invitations' went out! Oh, the wedding is going to be just lovely here" brags mother as she cheers up after opening the card. "I bet it will. Did I tell you Mel asked me to be her maid of honor? I said yes" I brag. Mother stands up. She hugs me. "I am thrilled for you! I am happy you are home. Do not get me wrong dear. I worry about you! I just want you to be happy again. You do not seem that happy to be back" she worries. "I was not at first. This is not where I thought I would be. But as they say, when life gives you lemons make lemonade right?" I tease. She nods as she hugs me again. "You will be great whatever you choose to do" she tells me after the hug. She was right. I never thought I would be back home here in Heaven Creek. But fate turned corners. And here I was. It was time I just dealt with it. And made the best out of it. No one else was going to do that for me but myself. Right?
