Martha threw up in fear. All the while, a black shadow sat on her shoulder, enjoying her suffering. * Karnelo sensed Martha’s anguish, just as he’d sensed Eder’s perplexity years ago. Eder let him get closer, because his false religiosity, which was only based on family rituals, seemed very fragile. Eder had entered his final year at the university. By that time he’d tried all different kinds of drugs and he drank almost every week. His life still seemed to be organised, but he was taking the lead less and less.
