Wish #5: go skydiving

Dave's POV

"Let me know how you talked me into this!" I yelled against the raging wind.

"You can't back out now Dave!" Kath yelled,squinting her eyes in the wind. "We made a pact!".

"To hell with the pact,I am not going to die young because of you!" I yelled.

"Dave! We are doing this together!" Kath yelled back.

I should have known yesterday when Kath asked me, "Dave? Are you scared of heights?" That something was wrong somewhere.

I responded with an ,'uh,not really I guess. It depends on the height and where i'm looking from'. Apparently,that answer only encouraged her more to take me sky diving. Now we were on a plane high up in the sky with parachutes.

"Don't worry,you will be safe" Our instructor said, "just get ready to pull out the parachute when i tell you,you will be fine and also,never jump past the jump zone".

"It doesn't matter cos' I am not doing this" I said.

"Come on Dave, pleaassseeee" Kath begged.

I looked at her pleading eyes and sighed heavily in defeat. "if I die,I will haunt you".

Kath grinned and wore her goggles. I did the same.

"Follow me" the instructor said "aannnd....JUMP!".

Everything happened so fast that when I opened my eyes,I was screaming and hovering in the air,gently gliding down.

This has got to be the most impulsive thing I had ever done.

"Aaaaahhhh!!!" I saw Katherine screaming and laughing at the same time. At a point,our instructor told us to let out our parachutes and we did. It turns out it wasn't as scary and terrifying as it was at first. Kath took a few pictures. She is lucky her phone didn't drop,it would have been irreparable.

My thoughts wandered and I thought about yesterday,Katherine was so upset about the man and that bothered me. I wasn't used to seeing Kath bothered,it just wasn't her. What the man said bothered me too but I had to stay strong for Kath. She didn't look too enthusiastic at that moment and I didn't want to burden her with my worries so I ignored it and made Kath forget it.

We finally landed and changed back to our clothes. I walked out of the building in large strides with Kath in tow.

"You should have seen your face" Kath laughed, "I thought you were going to pee your pants".

I adjusted my trousers, "no, you should have seen your face".

"So where are we going next?" Kath asked.

"What do you mean we? The only place we and by we I mean you are going is home".

"Why?!" Kath whined.

"My shift starts soon" i answered simply.

"What about tomorrow?".

I shook my head. "No, tomorrow is the opening of a new restaurant my boss opened and he wants me to be his chef for the night. If I do excellently,he will promote me and I will be head chef of the new restaurant" I said with glowing eyes,it had always been my dream to be a chef. From being an head chef to owning a restaurant. I can see it happening.

Kath groaned, "fine,you can go". I went to my bike and got on,Kath ran her fingers on the smooth leather. "When will I get to ride your bike?" She asked.

I laughed abruptly before answering. "Never". She pouted and grumpily got on the bike. We drove home.

The next day came sooner than expected and I had to go to work. Today was a very busy day so I couldn't be late. After going over the rules with Kath(that she doesn't follow), I left but on my way in,I got a call from Sandra.

A grin spread across my face before I knew it and I answered the call. "Hello sandy bear".

"Seriously Dave" I heard Sandra say unimpressed. "After all this time,you can't say my name right?".

"It's not like you weren't going to do the same thing so I thought I should just take the initiative" I grinned.

"Whatever" Sandra said dismissively but I could tell she was smiling. "Good morning Davy booboo bear".

I laughed at the silly nickname and we kept on talking. "So tell me,how is everything there? Mom? Your Mom? Sam?".

"They are fine,they miss you" Sandra said. "How long has it been since you spoke to them?".

I scratched my head sheepishly as I thought. "About a month".

Sandra heaved a disappointed sigh, "call them Dave! They get worried about you. You can't live your life forgetting about your family".

"Come on,don't get sentimental" I said. "I will call them as soon as I get the time. You tend to over exaggerate you know?".

"I am only trying to help" she said, "I'm guessing you are going to work. I thought to call you since we haven't talked to each other in a while".

"Yeah,I'm already at work and thanks for calling. I really appreciate it" I smiled.

"Glad you do,take care Dave" Sandra said, "love you". She hung up. I looked at my phone and smiled wistfully. If only that were true.

"I see you've been doing great in this past few days" Fred said as soon as I came in. I had changed into my chef uniform after talking to Sandra and joined them.

"Yeah but why do you say it like that?" I asked confused while slicing carrots.

"This" Toyosi said,holding up a phone in front of me. I took it from her and looked at it. There were pictures of me,Kath and Ayo. He had posted them the day after the beach,I didn't even know Ayo took pictures. There was a particular picture that Toyosi emphasized which was the one of me carrying Kath into the water.

"So,who is she?" Toyosi asked,keeping her phone in her apron. "You two seemed really close".

"Are you jealous?" I teased.

"What? No" Toyosi refuted. "I just wanted to know what's going on. It's that why you weren't so hung up on Miriam,is she your girlfriend?" Toyosi rambled and asked with wide eyes as she came to a 'realisation'.

Everyone turned to me looking to hear the answer. "No! She is just a friend" I exclaimed unimpressed. "Why are you guys so interested in my life anyways?".

"As boring as you are Dave,your life tends to have the biggest drama that comes with the boredom" Efe answered. I huffed indignantly in reply.

"She looks familiar" another one of my coworkers said,staring fixedly at the picture on his phone.

"That's impossible" I denied, "she doesn't go outdoors. She has stayed–,I mean,is one of those indoor people".

"Ohhh!!! I remember her now" he exclaimed in recognition,amazement twinkling in his eyes. I turned to him curiously. What could Larry possibly know about Katherine?

"She is the dancer K.O" Larry said excitedly. I furrowed my brows confused. I know Kath is a dancer but K.O?

Everyone peered into Larry's phone and saw a video of Katherine. The background was a neat one,the tiles were shiny clean and the walls were sort of eggshell blue or something. Katherine smiled at the camera then music started playing and she danced.

This confused me. "She...is popular?".

"Yeah" another of my coworkers said. "She has over 170,000 followers on all her social media page and accounts".

I staggered shocked. "Se–Seventeen thousand...how long has she been active,I mean doing this?".

"Hmm,six–seven years" someone answered. I stared in disbelief and shock. Katherine is a popular internet star.

"Dude! How did you meet her?!" Someone exclaimed. "People have been dying to meet her ever since she became popular".

"I just...we just...er,bumped into each other" I said,not necessarily lying. I mean,we did bump into each other at the club.

"Man,lucky".

"Lucky?! I barely knew she was a popular dancer. How was I not aware?!" I exclaimed incredulously.

"Dave,do you hear yourself? You don't do anything on social media other than food,how would you find the time to check music and dances?" Toyosi pointed out and I thought her words through. Yep,she's right.

"Still,she could have told me" I muttered under my breath. We stopped the conversation and went back to our duty post. Is that what Kath didn't want me to know? No,she said something about her father but what could it be. I sighed,I hope I get my answers soon enough.

The day was unbelievably busy,I was so exhausted and I wasn't even done. I went on my break and my phone rang. I picked it up and saw Kath on the caller ID.

"What does she want now?" I muttered and answered the call. I surprised my tired self by asking so excitedly, "Hello Kath,what do you want? Also how could you not tell me you were a popular dancer and had a lot of followers?!".

Kath stayed quiet for a while,I assumed she was taken aback. "Whaaat?" She said sounding amused.

"Why didn't you tell me you posted your dance moves frequently?" I said sounding upset. "You're popular,my friends know you. They watch your dance videos".

"Oh" Katherine just said. "I didn't think it was important".

"Well,my friends are making a big deal about it".

"Don't be upset Dave,I didn't really think it was important. I'm sorry I didn't tell you".

"It's okay" I mumbled. I could never get too upset at Katherine.

"Sooo" Kath drawled out suspiciously, "your friends are fans".

"Forget that and tell me why you called" I said changing the topic.

"Okay,so today is the opening of the new restaurant right?" Kath asked.

"Yeah,I might come late. 10 pm at most" I told her,feeling slightly bad.

"Oh,okay" Kath said calmly. That confused me because I know that Kath is anything but calm. "When is it?".

"The opening party?".

"Yep,what time?".

"6:30 but people will start arriving at 7,mostly 7:30".

"Does Ayo know the restaurant?".

"Yes...why are you asking?" I asked,narrowing my eyes suspiciously.

"Nothing,bye!".

"Kath wait!" I said but she had already hung up. I stared at my phone in disbelief. I hope she really doesn't do what i'm thinking. Whatever,I will deal with her later.

I resumed my work and before I knew it,the party started. It's not like I would join the party,all I am here for is to make the food. I decided to take a rest while Dafe took over. I leaned my back on the wall with a sigh. I shut my eyes to calm my mind but I heard a lot of whisperings from the side. I furrowed my brows in displeasure.

"...how dare she come here...".

"She is such a...".

"...you are being harsh...you can't blame everyone for not loving who loves them...".

"That is a different case...she played him...".

"She knew Dave would be here,that skank".

"What are you guys talking about?" I asked,walking over to them. They abruptly stopped and huddled together with forced smiles on their faces. I narrowed my eyes at them suspiciously.

"Nothing" Toyosi said immediately.

I crossed my arms,looking intimidating, "tell me,what's going on? Who are you talking about?".

"No one,just forget it–" Toyosi said but was interrupted by the head chef.

"Dave,I know it isn't your job but someone at table 12 wants you to serve their food. She specifically asked for you" the head chef said,shooting me an apologetic look. I furrowed my brows confused but nodded my head.

"No wait!" Toyosi said,holding me back. She looked pretty frantic and she was acting weird. "I'll do it myself".

"Dave was asked for,not you" The head chef said with his eagle eyed eyes,throwing a subtle glare. He did not sound pleased that Toyosi was going against his commands.

"I'll go" I said,removing Toyosi's hand. I carried the tray of food and went out to the party,but not before seeing Toyosi's and the rest sad and pitiful glance. What is going on with them?.

I walked to table 12,there was a woman and a man seated there. The woman...looked sort of familiar. I approached their table slowly and when I got there,I froze in shock.

It was Miriam. She was dressed in a red-purple handless gown that stopped just below her knee. She looked so beautiful,her red lips...oh God. What is she doing here?.

She looked at me and smiled as if she didn't know me but the spark in her eyes showed otherwise. I tore my gaze from her and lowered my head,dropping the food on their table. She came here with her husband and told me to serve their food?,what game is she playing?! Now I understand what Toyosi and the others were talking about.

"Enjoy" I said still looking down and turned away. I walked away as quickly as I could. Toyosi came out of the kitchen just as someone spun me around to face them. My body tensed under her touch.

"Dave..." Miriam smiled and hugged me. I stayed frozen in shock. Because of my back turned to Toyosi,I couldn't see her reaction but I guessed she was fuming in anger.

Miriam pulled away,staring at me innocently. "Why didn't you hug me back?" She asked and I stared at her stunned. Is she really serious?

"Baby,you have no idea how much I missed you" Miriam said,snaking her hands around my neck. "Clement is so boring,he is nothing like you and I. Want. You".

"Don't tell me you are going to fall for this" Toyosi said indignantly,coming into my line of vision.

"Oh,no way" I said,taking Miriam's hands off me. Miriam looked like she had been wronged and I couldn't help but throw her an incredulous look. I can't believe I almost fell in love with this woman.

"You dumped me Miriam and you married another man on the same day. You weren't even going to tell me that you were getting married" I said,surprised at how calm my voice sounded. "And now,you expect me to come back to your arms because your husband is boring?! You are crazy,do you know that".

"Dave?!" Miriam exclaimed shocked,sounding as if she was innocent of all i accused her of.

"Just stop this Miriam,i don't have the energy for this" I said tired of the conversation. I turned to walk away when a different voice got my attention.

"Dave!".

"Katherine?!" I turned around shocked.

"Oh my gosh,it's your dancer girlfriend!" Toyosi exclaimed star-struck.

Katherine was dressed in a simple blue Ankara gown but she looked amazing.

"She is not my girlfriend" I said breathlessly still staring at Kath.
