Chapter 4

The morning sun caught the steel-and-glass exterior of Wade International headquarters, making the sixty-story tower gleam like a mirror against the skyline. Caroline stood on the sidewalk across the street, smoothing the lapels of her tailored ivory blazer. Beside her, Mia was nervously checking her iPad for the fifth time, running through the presentation slides. "Everything is loaded, right?" Mia asked, her voice tight with tension. "The 3D floor renders, the catering menu, the lighting concept?" "It’s all ready, Mia," Caroline said, offering her friend a reassuring smile, though her own nerves were humming. "We spent three straight days perfecting this pitch. Bennett & Co. belongs in that room." "I know, I know," Mia sighed, taking a deep breath. "It's just... Alexander Wade. The guy has a reputation for shredding proposals in five minutes flat if he’s bored. He’s cold, he’s methodical, and he doesn't give second chances." "Then we won't need one," Caroline replied smoothly, though a strange, inexplicable knot tightened in her stomach as they walked through the grand glass doors into the main lobby. The security check was fast and seamless. Daniel met them near the private elevators, immaculate in a dark charcoal suit, carrying a tablet. "Ms. Bennet? Ms. Carter?" Daniel greeted them with a polite, professional nod. "I am Daniel, Mr. Wade’s executive assistant. Follow me, please. The board and Mr. Wade are waiting in the main conference room on the top floor." "Thank you, Daniel," Caroline said, stepping into the glass elevator. As the lift accelerated upward, taking in sweeping views of the city, Caroline felt a sudden, bizarre sense of familiarity—a faint echo of high-society luxury that flickered through her mind, but she quickly brushed it off. When the elevator doors chimed open on the sixtieth floor, Daniel led them down a wide, carpeted hallway toward a massive pair of frosted-glass double doors. He opened them and motioned for the women to enter. The boardroom was impressive. A massive polished mahogany table ran down the center, flanked by senior executives, legal advisers, and event directors. At the far end of the table, sitting in the high-backed leather chair, was the CEO. Caroline stepped into the room, her professional smile firmly in place. "Good morning, everyone. I’m Caroline Bennet, founder of—" Her voice completely cut off. The man at the end of the table looked up from his file. Caroline’s breath hitched in her throat, the words dissolving into air. Her heart violently slammed against her ribs. Broad shoulders. Dark, piercing eyes shadowed by a strong brow. A sharp, aristocratic jawline carved from marble. It was him. The man from the hotel room. The stranger whose bed she had fled in the dead of night. The man whose voice had growled in the dark while his hands held her wrist. Alexander Wade. Caroline felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her ice-cold. Panic, sharp and dizzying, surged through her veins. Oh my God. You have got to be kidding me. Across the long table, Alexander’s eyes locked onto hers. For two seconds, time seemed to freeze entirely. Alexander’s sharp, analytical mind registered her face, the quiet intensity in her hazel eyes, and the delicate structure of her cheekbones. The memory of two weeks ago flared instantly in his mind: the sweet trace of floral perfume, the trembling touch, the raw, heartbreaking vulnerability of a woman who had vanished before dawn. Recognition struck him like a physical blow. He had searched the entire city, pulled security logs, and questioned staff, finding nothing. And now, the woman who had haunted his thoughts—the one unaccounted variable in his controlled world—had walked right into his corporate headquarters, dressed in a sleek suit, holding an event proposal. Alexander didn't gasp. He didn't lose his composure. But his dark eyes darkened further, a slow, intense focus taking hold as he leaned back in his leather chair, never breaking eye contact with her. Mia nudged Caroline discreetly with her elbow, whispering under her breath, "Care? What’s wrong? You stopped mid-sentence." Caroline swallowed hard, her palms slick with sweat. She forced her lungs to take in air, fighting with every ounce of willpower to keep her knees from buckling. She couldn't break down here. She couldn't let him know that she remembered, or that she knew who he was. She had to be professional. "My apologies," Caroline said, her voice shaking slightly before she stabilized it, pulling on years of practiced poise. "Thank you for having us today. I am Caroline Bennet, and this is Mia Carter. We are honored to present our vision for Wade International’s annual gala." Alexander said nothing. He simply tracked her every move as she walked to the head of the presentation screen. As Mia started the digital slide deck, Caroline began to speak. Her voice was steady, describing the concept of "Elegance in Motion," detailing the lighting designs, the security measures, the private VIP zones, and the seamless flow of the evening. Throughout the entire twenty-minute presentation, the senior executives nodded in approval, making notes on their tablets. But Caroline barely registered them. Every second felt like walking on a high wire because she could feel Alexander’s gaze burning into her. He wasn't looking at the screen. He was looking at her. He watched the way her lips moved, the way her fingers tapped the clicker, the subtle rise and fall of her chest as she breathed. When the presentation concluded, the room fell quiet. Marcus Hale, the senior legal adviser, looked up with a warm smile. "An exceptional proposal, Ms. Bennet. The security integration and floral concept are remarkably sophisticated." "Thank you, Mr. Hale," Caroline said, keeping her eyes fixed safely on Marcus, avoiding the end of the table at all costs. "Mr. Wade?" Marcus turned to Alexander. "Your thoughts?" The room went dead silent. Everyone turned to the CEO. Alexander slowly folded his hands together on the dark wood table. His gaze remained locked on Caroline’s pale, composed face. "The security protocols are well thought out," Alexander said, his low, deep baritone sending a shiver straight down Caroline’s spine. "Though I am curious about one thing, Ms. Bennet." Caroline forced herself to look directly at him, locking eyes with the man who had held her in the dark. "Yes, Mr. Wade?" "You place a heavy emphasis on discretion and controlling access points to private suites," Alexander said slowly, his voice laced with a subtle, dangerous double meaning that only she would understand. "In your experience... how easy is it for an unauthorized person to slip past security and enter a room they don't belong in?" Mia looked slightly confused by the specific question, but Caroline felt her heart drop into her stomach. She tightened her grip on the laser pointer, lifting her chin slightly as her stubborn pride flared. "If the proper protocols are enforced, Mr. Wade, no one gets in by mistake. But when human error occurs... unexpected collisions happen. The key is how you handle the aftermath." A faint, almost imperceptible tilt appeared at the corner of Alexander’s mouth. "Indeed," Alexander murmured, his tone smooth as glass. He turned his attention to Daniel, who was standing beside him. "We’re done here. Clear the room. I’d like a moment alone with Ms. Bennet to discuss the final contract details." Mia blinked, looking between Caroline and Alexander in surprise. The other executives quickly gathered their tablets and began filing out, murmuring about the unexpected direct involvement of the CEO. "I'll wait outside in the lobby, Care," Mia whispered, giving Caroline’s arm a quick, supportive squeeze before leaving the room. Daniel was the last to exit. As he passed Alexander, he caught the intense look in his boss's eyes and quietly pulled the heavy double doors shut, leaving the two of them in absolute, terrifying isolation. The massive conference room was suddenly suffocatingly quiet. Caroline stood by the presentation podium, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Alexander stood up slowly. His tall, imposing frame dominated the space as he stepped away from the table, unbuttoning his suit jacket and placing his hands into his trouser pockets. He walked toward her, his movements slow, deliberate, and predatory. Caroline took an instinctual step back until her lower back bumped against the edge of the mahogany table. Alexander stopped just two feet away from her. Up close, his presence was overwhelming. The sharp scent of expensive cologne and clean cedar wrapped around her—a scent that instantly triggered vivid, burning memories of the night in the hotel. "You have a very impressive firm, Ms. Bennet," Alexander said softly, his dark eyes searching every inch of her face. "Thank you, Mr. Wade," Caroline replied, forcing her tone to remain stiff and professional. "We take our work very seriously. If you have any notes on the budget, I can—" "Two weeks," Alexander interrupted, his low voice cutting through her professional mask. Caroline paused, her throat dry. "What?" "I spent two weeks looking for you," Alexander said, taking one half-step closer. The distance between them shrank to almost nothing. "I had security pulling camera footage, cross-referencing guest lists, checking every angle. And you simply vanished." Caroline swallowed hard, refusing to look away, though her cheeks flushed a deep, burning crimson. "I don't know what you're talking about, Mr. Wade. You must have me confused with someone else." Alexander tilted his head, a dark, dangerous spark glinting in his eyes. "Do I?" He reached out, his long fingers lightly brushing against the side of her wrist, right over her accelerating pulse. Caroline gasped softly at the electric contact, her breath catching in her throat. "You walked into my room," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping into an intimate, hoarse whisper that vibrated right through her. "You wept in the dark, you took what you needed to forget... and then you ran before sunrise." He leaned in slightly, his dark gaze dropping to her lips before rising back to meet her wide, breathless eyes. "Don't lie to me, Caroline. I know exactly who you are."
