Chapter Sixteen The DiversionVermont-Canada Border June 10, 1926 Kelly’s challenge was moving four hundred and fifty cases of bootleg whiskey from the Canadian border to the buyer in Whitehall. After driving sixty miles without interruption, the convoy reached Swanton, Vermont. They made camp and waited for nightfall. Over dinner, Kelly explained that the convoy would wait three hours and then begin the 115-mile journey south to Whitehall. This three-hour delay would allow Kelly, Costello, and Feeney time to commence a diversion, which, if all went as planned, would permit the convoy to drive to Whitehall without incident. “You are in command of the convoy,” Kelly told Moyer. “Take the Packard and scout for anything suspicious. When you see the diversion, head straight to Whitehall.”
