Chapter Seven The CarnivalGranville, New York May 30, 1926 Each Memorial Day, Granville held a carnival followed by a tribute to its fallen and living war veterans. The main draw this year was a boxing exhibition featuring World War hero, Major Mike Kelly. Kelly and his 105th Infantry Regiment were legendary for their feats of heroism in France and Germany during the Great War. Although Ryan Costello also served with the 105th, fighting side by side with Kelly himself, Costello would not be honored at this or any other celebration. Alcohol had captured him during the war, and he had no recollection of his great sacrifice for the country. In the years following the war, Costello was little more than a daily, staggering reminder that not all of Granville’s sons had returned unscathed. E
