Schiphol Airport, The Netherlands
Airport City Schiphol, or Luchthaven Schiphol, as it’s known in Dutch, was precisely what the name suggested—a city unto itself. Aviation might be its heartbeat, but a vast shopping mall seemed to be at its center. They sold everything from duty-free clothing, furs, perfume, and liquor, to electronic equipment. Someone could shop at seven in the morning, buy an entire wardrobe, stop for lunch, and gamble at the casino. Then finish the day by dining in one of the many restaurants or lounges the plaza had to offer. They could pack their purchases in a suitcase or backpack bought at one of the finer tax-free stores.
