Chapter Ten: The Seal Breaks

765 Words
The seal didn’t just break. It collapsed. A violent wave of light burst outward from the center, forcing everyone backward. Trees around the clearing shook like they might be uprooted. Luna stumbled, but Aiden caught her instantly, pulling her close to steady her. But even his grip felt different now. He wasn’t just holding her. He was reacting to her. The council leader covered his face briefly, shielding himself from the light. “It’s fully undone…” Aiden’s voice cut through the chaos. “Get them back!” But it was too late. The ground beneath the seal split open completely. And something rose from it. Not a creature. Not a person. A presence. Luna’s breath caught. “What is that…?” The air grew heavier. Colder. Like reality itself was bending. And then— it spoke. Not through sound. Through her mind. “Luna…” She froze instantly. Aiden noticed. “Don’t listen to it.” But she already was. The presence pressed closer, like it recognized her. Like it had been waiting for her specifically. “You returned.” Luna shook her head quickly. “No… I don’t know you.” Aiden tightened his hold on her. “Luna, focus on me.” But her eyes stayed locked on the light rising from the ground. The council members were retreating now. Even they looked afraid. The leader’s voice came low. “This is worse than we thought…” Aiden’s expression hardened. “Explain.” The man didn’t look at him. “…The origin didn’t just store memories,” he said. “It stored something alive.” Luna’s chest tightened. “Something alive?” The presence in the seal responded instantly. “I am not something.” The ground cracked again. Luna gasped as a wave of pressure hit her body. Aiden pulled her closer immediately. “Stop!” But the presence didn’t stop. It focused on her. Only her. “I am what you became.” Silence. That hit differently. Luna’s voice trembled. “What… I became?” Aiden’s eyes shifted slightly toward her. Something unreadable there. The council leader stepped back further. “It’s awakening through her connection…” Aiden snapped. “Enough!” But the presence continued. “You broke yourself to save him.” Luna’s breathing turned uneven. “Stop…” Images flickered in her mind again. Not memories this time. Fragments. A war. A sacrifice. Her hands over Aiden. A decision. A final choice. She clutched her head. “No… no, I don’t want this!” Aiden turned her face toward him sharply. “Luna—look at me.” She did. And for a second… everything else faded. Just him. Just now. But the presence didn’t disappear. It grew stronger. “He is the reason you shattered the bond.” Aiden’s expression changed instantly. Luna froze. “…What?” she whispered. The presence pulsed. “And now the bond wants correction.” The ground exploded upward slightly—stone and light breaking apart. Aiden immediately moved, pulling Luna away from the collapsing area. “Stay behind me!” he ordered. But Luna grabbed his arm. “Aiden… what did it mean? I shattered the bond because of you?” Silence. A rare one. Aiden didn’t answer immediately. And that silence said more than words ever could. The council leader looked between them, alarm rising. “If she fully remembers, the Alpha line will destabilize!” Aiden’s voice dropped dangerously. “Try me.” But Luna stepped forward slightly, still holding his arm. “Aiden,” she said softly, “tell me the truth.” For the first time, he hesitated. Then— quietly— “You didn’t shatter it because of me,” he said. “You did it for me.” Luna’s breath caught. The presence in the seal reacted instantly. “The truth fractures the bond further.” The light surged again. A massive wave pushed outward. Luna lost balance—but Aiden caught her immediately, pulling her into his chest this time. Closer. Protective. Unshakable. And something snapped inside the space between them. The mark on her wrist burned brighter than ever. Aiden felt it too. His breath hitched slightly. “…It’s complete,” he whispered. Luna looked up at him. “What is?” Aiden met her eyes. And this time, there was no escape from the truth. “The bond isn’t returning,” he said quietly. “It’s reforming.” The presence inside the seal surged one final time. “Welcome back to what you destroyed.” And then— everything went white.
