Chapter Eleven: The Bond Rewrites

894 Words
White. That was all Luna could see. Not light. Not darkness. Just… nothing. And yet she could feel everything. Aiden’s arm around her. Her heartbeat. The mark on her wrist burning like it was alive. “Aiden…” she tried to say—but her voice didn’t come out right. It echoed. Or maybe the space itself was echoing her. Then slowly— sound returned. First the wind. Then breathing. Then reality. Luna stumbled forward slightly as the white faded. They were back in the forest. But it wasn’t the same anymore. The seal was gone. The ground was cracked open and glowing faintly, like veins of light running through stone. The council members were gone. No sign of them. Only Aiden remained beside her. Still holding her. Still steadying her. But something about him felt… different too. Luna looked up at him slowly. “What just happened?” Aiden didn’t answer immediately. His eyes were locked on her wrist. The mark. It wasn’t just glowing anymore. It had changed shape. Luna noticed his silence and followed his gaze. “Why are you staring like that?” Aiden’s voice came low. “…It rewrote itself.” Luna frowned. “Rewrote what?” He finally looked at her. And for the first time since she met him, he looked uncertain. “The bond,” he said quietly. “It’s not the same one anymore.” Luna pulled her hand back slightly. “That doesn’t make sense.” Aiden stepped closer—but not aggressively. Carefully. Like he was afraid of what might happen next. “It used to bind us,” he said. “Now it’s… evolving.” Luna’s stomach tightened. “Evolving into what?” He didn’t answer right away. That silence again. It was becoming familiar now. Too familiar. Finally, he spoke. “…Something stronger than a mate bond.” Luna felt a chill run through her. “No,” she shook her head. “No, I don’t want anything stronger. I don’t even understand what I already have.” Aiden’s gaze softened slightly. “I know,” he said. That surprised her. Because it didn’t sound like the Alpha speaking. It sounded like him. Just him. Luna looked around slowly. “Where did everyone go? The council? The others?” Aiden glanced around the broken clearing. “…Gone.” “Gone how?” “I don’t know yet.” That wasn’t comforting. Luna exhaled shakily. “This keeps getting worse.” Aiden gave a faint, almost tired look. “It usually does.” That almost made her laugh. Almost. But then the mark on her wrist pulsed again. Hard. Luna gasped, grabbing it. “It’s happening again!” Aiden moved instantly. “What is it now?” But this time— it wasn’t pain. It was pulling. Like something inside her was trying to move. Luna staggered slightly. “I feel… dizzy.” Aiden caught her again before she fell. His grip was firmer now. Different. More instinctive. “…It’s reacting to proximity,” he murmured. “To what?” Aiden looked at her for a long moment. Then quietly— “Me.” Her breath caught. Before she could respond— a faint voice echoed inside her head again. But this time, it wasn’t the seal. It wasn’t ancient. It felt closer. Familiar. “Finally…” Luna froze. “Aiden…” she whispered. “Did you hear that?” He went still instantly. “…Yes.” The forest around them shifted slightly. Not physically. But energetically. Like something unseen had just become aware of them again. Aiden stepped forward, placing himself between Luna and the trees automatically. “Stay close,” he said. Luna frowned. “I am close.” He glanced at her briefly. “Closer.” That was new. And unsettling. Luna moved beside him again, unsure why her heart was suddenly beating faster. “What is that voice?” she asked quietly. Aiden’s expression darkened. “…Something that shouldn’t still exist.” Before Luna could ask more— a shadow moved between the trees. Then another. Then several. Not council members this time. Not pack warriors she recognized. These figures felt… wrong. Different. And they weren’t walking. They were arriving. Aiden’s voice dropped instantly. “…We’re not alone.” Luna’s breath tightened. “I noticed.” One of the figures stepped forward. Slow. Deliberate. And when it spoke— its voice matched the one in her head. “Bond holder…” Luna stepped back slightly. Aiden didn’t move. The figure tilted its head. “You broke the seal.” Aiden’s jaw tightened. “Who are you?” A pause. Then— “We are what remains of the original bond.” Silence. Luna felt her stomach drop. “…Original bond?” she whispered. Aiden’s hand shifted slightly in front of her—protective again. But this time, the figure looked directly at her. “And you,” it said softly, “are the correction.” Luna’s breath stopped. Aiden’s eyes sharpened instantly. “…Correction?” The figure nodded slightly. “The bond between you and him was never meant to stabilize.” A pause. Then the final words came. “It was meant to reset everything.” The wind around them shifted violently. And the mark on Luna’s wrist burned like it was waking up all over again.
