Chapter Six: The Council’s Shadow

The mark on Luna’s wrist pulsed again. But this time, it didn’t feel like pain. It felt like a signal. Like something was answering her. Aiden saw it too. And for the first time since she met him, he looked genuinely unsettled. “No…” he whispered under his breath. Luna frowned. “What now?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he grabbed her wrist gently and turned it slightly toward the faint light breaking through the trees. The symbol wasn’t just glowing anymore. It was shifting. Like it was reacting to something approaching. Luna’s breath caught. “Why is it doing that?” Aiden’s voice dropped. “They’re close.” Before she could ask who “they” were— the forest changed again. The air tightened. The silence deepened. And then footsteps. Not rushing this time. Controlled. Organized. Powerful. Aiden immediately stepped in front of her. Luna’s heart began to race. “Not again…” From between the trees, figures emerged. But this time, it wasn’t chaos like before. It was order. They were arranged. Aligned. And at the center of them— an older man stepped forward. His presence alone made the air feel heavier. Aiden straightened slightly the moment he saw him. Luna noticed. “You know him,” she whispered. Aiden didn’t take his eyes off the man. “…Yes.” The older man stopped a few steps away. His gaze moved from Aiden… to Luna. And lingered. “So,” he said slowly, “this is her.” Luna felt her stomach twist. Something about his voice wasn’t just calm. It was judging. Aiden’s tone sharpened instantly. “She is not yours to examine.” The man raised a hand slightly. “Careful, Alpha,” he said. “You forget who stands before you.” Aiden didn’t move. But the air around him shifted again. Controlled anger. Barely contained power. Luna felt it. Even without understanding it. The older man sighed lightly. “The council has gathered,” he continued. “Your actions have caused imbalance.” Aiden’s jaw tightened. “She is not a violation.” The man’s eyes flicked to Luna again. “That is not for you to decide.” Luna stepped forward slightly before she could stop herself. “Excuse me,” she said firmly, though her voice shook slightly, “can someone explain what exactly is going on? I’m tired of being talked about like I’m not standing right here.” Silence. Even the pack behind him seemed to pause. The older man studied her for a moment. Then spoke. “You are marked,” he said simply. Luna lifted her wrist. “Yes. I noticed.” That made a few of them shift slightly. Aiden glanced at her quickly, like he wasn’t sure whether to be impressed or worried. The man continued. “That mark means the bond has accepted you.” Luna frowned. “Bond. Mate. Alpha. I’ve heard enough of those words to last a lifetime, but nobody is explaining anything properly.” The man’s expression didn’t change. “You are not just human anymore.” That sentence hit differently than the rest. Luna froze. “…I am human,” she said quietly. Aiden’s voice softened slightly behind her. “You were,” he corrected. Her breath caught. The man took a step closer. “Fated bonds do not form randomly,” he said. “They appear when balance is required.” Luna shook her head slightly. “Balance of what?” He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he looked at Aiden. And then back at her. “The Alpha line… and something that was meant to remain hidden.” Aiden’s body tensed instantly. “No,” he said sharply. The man ignored him. Luna’s heart dropped. “What hidden thing?” The older man finally looked directly at her again. And said it. “You are not only his mate.” Silence. The forest felt like it stopped breathing. Aiden’s voice turned dangerously low. “Don’t.” But it was already too late. The man continued. “You are part of something older than our pack… older than him.” Luna felt cold. “What does that mean?” Aiden stepped closer to her immediately. “Enough,” he said again, but this time it wasn’t just command—it was warning. The council member raised a hand. And the pack behind him moved slightly forward. Not attacking. But ready. Luna looked between them all. Her chest tightened. “This is insane,” she whispered. The man’s voice softened slightly. “Bring her to the council,” he said. “And the truth will be revealed properly.” Aiden let out a quiet, bitter breath. “No.” That single word changed everything again. The air shifted violently. The pack reacted instantly. Luna felt it before she saw it—something about to explode. “Aiden—” she started. But he didn’t look at her. Not yet. Instead, he turned slightly. Just enough so she could see his face. And what she saw there made her stomach drop. He wasn’t just angry anymore. He was deciding. Between her… and war. The council member noticed too. “You would defy us for her?” he asked quietly. Aiden’s voice was steady. “Yes.” Silence. Heavy. Final. The forest seemed to react to that word. Even Luna felt it. Something binding. Something irreversible. The council member’s eyes narrowed slightly. “So be it.” And then— everything moved at once. The pack surged forward. Aiden grabbed Luna immediately, pulling her back. “Run,” he said sharply. Luna’s eyes widened. “Again?!” But there was no time to argue. The forest erupted into motion. Luna stumbled as Aiden pulled her deeper into the darkness. Behind them, voices rose. Commands. Footsteps. Power. Luna’s heart pounded in her chest. “Aiden!” she shouted. “Where are we even going?!” He didn’t slow down. “Somewhere they can’t follow easily.” “That’s not an answer!” “It’s the only one I have right now.” They pushed through the trees again. Faster. Deeper. Until the forest itself seemed unfamiliar. Luna could barely breathe properly now. Her wrist burned again—but differently. Sharper. Stronger. Almost like it was pulling her somewhere. “Aiden…” she whispered. “It’s happening again…” He glanced at her wrist mid-run. And his expression changed instantly. “Don’t stop,” he said urgently. But Luna slowed slightly. Because in front of them— the forest ended. Not into open land. Not into safety. But into something else entirely. A place that felt older. Colder. Like it had been waiting. Aiden stopped suddenly. Luna almost bumped into him. She looked up. “…What is this place?” Aiden stared ahead. And for the first time— his voice dropped into something almost like a warning prayer. “The place where the truth starts.” Behind them, the sound of pursuit grew louder. And in front of them… the darkness waited.
