Chapter Nine: The Unsealed Memory

838 Words
The crack in the seal widened. Slowly at first. Then violently. A sound echoed through the space—not a break, but a release, like something had been holding its breath for centuries and finally exhaled. Luna staggered back. “Aiden… it’s getting worse!” Aiden didn’t answer immediately. His attention was locked on the seal. On the shifting light. On the memory still lingering in the air. The council leader stepped forward sharply. “This must be stopped now!” Aiden turned instantly, blocking Luna again. “No one moves.” The leader’s eyes narrowed. “You’re losing control of this situation.” Aiden’s voice dropped. “I never had control of it.” That made Luna pause. Because for the first time… he sounded honest. The seal pulsed again. And then— everything stopped. Completely. No wind. No sound. Even breathing felt suspended. Luna looked around slowly. “Why does it feel like time stopped?” Aiden’s expression darkened. “…It did,” he said quietly. Before Luna could respond— the seal opened. Not physically. But like reality itself folded. And something stepped through. A figure. Human-shaped. But not fully real. Luna’s breath caught. “What is that…” The figure tilted its head. And looked directly at her. “Luna.” Her name echoed—but not spoken. Felt. Aiden stepped forward slightly, tense. “Stay behind me.” But Luna couldn’t move. The figure felt… familiar. Too familiar. Like a memory she couldn’t fully reach. The council leader whispered behind them. “Impossible… the imprint survived.” Luna frowned. “Imprint?” The figure moved closer. And with every step, the air shifted. Not dangerous. Not aggressive. Just… heavy with meaning. Aiden’s voice turned low. “Don’t listen to it.” But Luna already was. The figure stopped in front of her. And slowly raised a hand. Luna flinched slightly—but didn’t step back. Aiden tensed immediately. “Luna—don’t.” But before he could stop her— the figure touched her forehead. And everything shattered. ⸻ Luna wasn’t in the forest anymore. She was somewhere else. A vast hall made of light and stone. Ancient markings glowing across the walls. And voices. So many voices. All speaking at once. Then— silence. In the center of the hall stood a woman. Not a girl. A queen. And Luna knew instantly— it was her. Or what she used to be. The woman turned slowly. And smiled faintly. “You returned faster than I expected.” Luna took a shaky step back. “What is this place?” The woman stepped forward. “A memory that should have stayed sealed.” Luna’s voice shook. “Am I dead?” A soft laugh echoed through the hall. “No.” The woman stopped in front of her. And gently touched Luna’s wrist. The mark flared instantly. Luna gasped. “It hurts—!” “Because you remember.” Luna shook her head quickly. “I don’t remember anything!” The woman tilted her head. “Not yet.” Images flashed suddenly. A young Luna. Standing in the same hall. Holding someone’s hand. Aiden. But different. Stronger. Younger. And kneeling before her. Luna gasped sharply. “No…” The vision continued. A war. The seal breaking. Council members screaming. And her— placing her hand over the origin seal. Sacrificing something. Everything. The vision snapped. Luna fell to her knees in the memory space. “Stop… I don’t want this…” The queen version of her knelt slightly. “You chose to be forgotten,” she said softly. Luna shook her head, tears forming in her eyes. “Why would I do that?” The woman looked at her gently. “To save him.” Silence. Luna froze. “…Aiden?” The vision shifted again. Aiden standing alone. Surrounded. Bleeding. Calling her name. And then— her voice answering from nowhere. Luna gasped as she returned to reality suddenly. Back in the forest. She collapsed slightly—but Aiden caught her instantly. “Luna!” he said sharply. “Look at me!” Her breathing was uneven. “I saw… everything…” Aiden went still. The council leader stepped back slowly. “…Then it’s confirmed.” Aiden’s voice turned cold. “Don’t say another word.” But Luna looked up at him. And this time, her voice was different. Quieter. Heavier. “…I erased myself.” Aiden froze. Luna swallowed. “I chose to be forgotten,” she whispered. “To save you.” Silence swallowed everything. Even the seal stopped moving. Aiden stared at her. For the first time— he looked shaken. “…Luna,” he said quietly. But she stepped back from him slightly. Not fear. Understanding. The mark on her wrist glowed brighter than ever. And somewhere deep in the seal— something responded. Waking fully. The council leader whispered: “The origin bond is complete.” A loud crack echoed through the ground. And the seal shattered.
