Chapter 12: The Competition Announcement

925 Words
The parish feast day performance was only three days away. Which meant the entire choir was stressed. Well. Most of the choir. Carlo somehow remained completely relaxed. Nobody understood how. Not even Carlo. Wednesday rehearsal began with unusual energy. The moment Sarah entered the church basement, she noticed something different. People were whispering. Smiling. Looking excited. Joshua stood near the front holding a sealed envelope. Mrs. Henderson looked suspiciously pleased. Neither of those things could be trusted. Sarah sat beside Mia. "What's happening?" Mia immediately leaned closer. "I have no idea." "Then why do you look excited?" "Because everyone else looks excited." A fair point. The room finally settled. Mrs. Henderson stepped forward. "Before rehearsal begins, I have an announcement." Instant silence. Even Carlo stopped talking. A miracle. Mrs. Henderson held up the envelope. "This arrived yesterday." Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The suspense lasted exactly three seconds. Then Carlo raised his hand. "Is it money?" "No." "That's disappointing." The room laughed. Mrs. Henderson opened the envelope. "As some of you know, every year the Diocese hosts a Regional Youth Choir Festival." Several choir members immediately straightened. Others exchanged excited looks. Sarah frowned. She had never heard of it. Mia noticed. "It's a big deal." "How big?" "The biggest." Helpful. Very helpful. Mrs. Henderson continued. "This year, our choir has been invited to participate." The room exploded. Cheers. Applause. Excited shouting. One person nearly knocked over a chair. Sarah had never seen the choir react this way. Apparently this was important. Very important. Joshua looked ready to cry. Daniel was grinning. Bea hugged Hannah. Even Angela seemed genuinely excited. Mrs. Henderson waited patiently for the noise to settle. Eventually it did. Mostly. Carlo was still celebrating. "The festival takes place in three months." The room immediately became more serious. Three months. That wasn't much time. "We'll be competing against choirs from across the region." Sarah blinked. Competing? Now that sounded familiar. The word stirred something inside her. A feeling she hadn't experienced since leaving the conservatory. Excitement. Nervousness. Possibility. For the first time in months, she felt the spark of challenge. The feeling surprised her. More than that— She missed it. After rehearsal officially began, the excitement remained impossible to ignore. Choir members discussed song choices. Travel plans. Possible competitors. Performance ideas. Everyone seemed energized. As though the invitation had awakened something. A shared dream. A shared goal. Sarah found herself caught up in it. Despite her best efforts. During break, she wandered toward the piano. The competition announcement lingered in her thoughts. A regional festival. A real stage. A chance to perform. Not for grades. Not for scholarships. For something entirely different. "You look thoughtful." Sarah glanced up. Mark stood nearby holding two bottles of water. He offered one. "Thanks." He sat beside her. "Competition nerves?" She laughed softly. "Is it that obvious?" "A little." Sarah stared at the piano keys. "I didn't think I'd miss it." "Miss what?" "Performing." The answer came more quietly than she intended. Mark nodded. Understanding immediately appearing in his eyes. "You never stopped loving music." Sarah looked down. "No." She hadn't. Maybe that was the problem. Across the room, Angela watched the interaction. Only briefly. Long enough to notice. Long enough to feel the familiar ache. She immediately looked away. Trying to ignore it. Trying to focus on the competition. Trying not to care. The last one was proving impossible. Near the end of rehearsal, Mrs. Henderson gathered everyone together. Her expression grew more serious. "The competition is exciting." The room nodded. "But remember something." The excitement softened. "We are a ministry before we are competitors." Several choir members lowered their heads. Including Sarah. "We will work hard." Mrs. Henderson smiled. "We will improve." More nods. "We will give our best." The room agreed. Then her voice gentled. "But our value does not depend on winning." The words settled over the group. Especially Sarah. Because once upon a time, she had measured herself by achievements. Performances. Awards. Scholarships. Success. Maybe that was part of what she needed to learn. As rehearsal ended, choir members remained behind discussing the festival. Nobody wanted to leave. The excitement was contagious. For the first time in years, the choir had a real opportunity. A chance to represent their parish. A chance to share their music. A chance to grow. As Sarah packed her things, Hannah appeared beside her. "You're smiling." "I am not." "You are." Sarah sighed. Apparently everyone had become experts at reading her face. "Maybe a little." Hannah laughed. "I knew it." The truth was simple. For months, Sarah had felt as though her future had been taken away. Now, for the first time since returning home, she felt something different. Not certainty. Not clarity. Hope. And hope was powerful. That evening, Sarah sat at her desk staring at the competition flyer Mrs. Henderson had handed out. Regional Youth Choir Festival. Three months away. A new challenge. A new opportunity. A new chapter. Her phone buzzed. Youth Choir Family ❤️ Joshua: WE'RE GOING TO THE FESTIVAL. Carlo: REGIONAL DOMINATION. Bea: Please don't call it that. Daniel: Definitely don't call it that. Carlo: Too late. Sarah laughed. Then typed: Sarah: This is going to be fun. The replies arrived instantly. Mia: SHE ADMITTED IT. Joshua: SCREENSHOT THIS. Carlo: HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE. Sarah rolled her eyes. Yet her smile remained. Because for once, they were right. It was going to be fun. She just didn't realize that the competition would become much more than a performance. It would change everything.
