Chapter 4 – The Promise
Eva’s aunt is crying when she enters the room in which Eva is supposed to be sleeping. However, Eva is still wide awake as she couldn’t fall asleep without knowing that her mother is ok. When she sees her aunt’s face, Eva breaks down and cries uncontrollably. Her aunt stays with her the whole night and only tells her that her mother was killed during the fight. Eva only finds out about the change in opponents on the day of her mother’s funeral when one of her friends tells her about it. She confronts her aunt and although she believes that she is protecting Eva by not telling her the full story, she soon comes clean as she can see that Eva will not give it a rest before she knows the whole truth. Upon getting confirmation that Emily Theron was replaced by a skilled fighter, Eva makes a promise to her mother that she will revenge her murder.
A week after the funeral, Eva’s aunt lays charges of murder against the company who owns the show ‘Duel’ and she also gets a lawyer to sue them for wrongful death of her sister. She became aware that Emily was not only replaced by another fighter, but that this fighter was not a friend of hers, but a professional fighter. The prosecuting office declines to take her case to court as Megan has agreed on live television to fight the new opponent and they therefore do not believe that they have any chance of success with criminal charges. However, the judge in the civil case finds that the host of the show combined with the circumstances she was in when she agreed to the fight put undue pressure on Megan and that her consent was given under duress. The company is ordered to pay Eva a huge amount of money, which her aunt has to invest for her until she reaches the age of eighteen.
Eva’s whole life changes after the death of her mother. Her aunt loves her almost as much as her mother did and she makes sure that Eva concentrates on her school work and that she still participates in sport, but Eva’s focus is on one thing only, to revenge her mother’s murder. She spends a lot of time researching death matches through the ages and specifically modern day duels. Her aim is to face Emily Theron in a death match and she wants to kill her with her own hands. To achieve this aim of hers, she needs to improve her fighting skills, so she also starts to research fighting academies to find out which one will prepare her the best for the fight. She will be able to join an academy when she turns eighteen and will have three years of training before she turns twenty-one and legally old enough to challenge and fight Emily Theron in a death match.
When her aunt learns about Eva’s plans to challenge Emily Theron to a duel, she tries to talk her out of it and when she realises that she will not be able to convince Eva to change her mind, she takes her to various psychologists, but none of them are able to change her mind either. Out of other options, she decides to give Eva time and to talk her out of fighting Emily Theron over time. Eva made a promise to her mother to revenge her murder and nobody and nothing will stop her from keeping this promise.
