Both Alessio and Marie turned towards the direction of the voice. There at the door stood Vincent with Morris in his arms.
Vincent glared at his father. while he was playing with Morris, he heard his father's voice, unsure of whom he was talking with, so he decided to just check.
“Father! Are you seriously planning a contract marriage for her?” He asked, putting Morris down in a chair near his mom. He turned to Marie who locked her eyes in his, giving him that look of, “it's none of your business.”
“This is a private discussion, it has nothing to do with you,” his father replied calmly. Vincent's eyes furrowed.
“I'm still part of the family, it's not bad if I hear what this is all about. Plus, I'm watching out for my sister, so I still think I should know,” he said pointing out to Marie who rolled her eyes on him.
“Sister indeed!” Marie mumbled silently, coughing mockingly.
His father nodded, “Fine! Then call your mother in, so it could be an agreed family meeting, since we both had agreed on something,” he requested. Marie stood up to go call her mom, leaving Morris with them. Morris already fell asleep on the couch. So Vincent positioned him well on the couch.
“Dad! Don't you think it's too early to arrange marriage for her,” Vincent asked with a worried look.
“Why are you so against this? Is there something you are not telling me? I still have your own case to discuss. When do you plan on settling down with Verena, age is no longer on her side and yours too. Someone better might take her from You,” his father cautioned him. At the mention of Verena, Vincent's mood changed immediately. His father wouldn't understand even if he explained things.
“Dad! It's just that Morris still needs to mature a little before being exposed to another step father, and…..”
“Oh! Shut it Vincent! I didn't beg you to speak on my behalf. Besides, both I and Morris need a father figure in our lives. Ur dad is already doing enough. Or don't you think I deserve some love and affection just like you and Verena?” Marie shunned him from the door entrance. She heard everything he was telling his father. She wondered why he was kicking against it. “Was he jealous or something, oh he shouldn't be!” She screamed in her heart.
Marie came and sat down, with her mom sitting by her side. Mr Alessio began explaining everything about his deal with his business partner. They were all nodding in affirmation except for Vincent who seemed so lost in the whole conversation.
“I hope this is not a kind of business-contract relationship!” Mrs Lawrence inquired curiously. “I just want genuine love for my daughter, so I hope it's not a business deal?” She concluded calmly, making her point clear. She wouldn't let her daughter and her grandson experience another form of emotional distrust. She believed they had been through a lot.
Mr Alessio smiled, “Of course darling! I want the very best for her and my grandson, I know they have been through a lot.” Mr Alessio chuckled. “I will personally cancel the relationship if he misbehaves, so be rest assured!” He concluded, Marie and her mom nodded with a smile.
“Vincent!” His father called and they all turned to look at him. He was staring at them one after the other, his eyes stopped at Marie for a while. He couldn't imagine her, having another man in her life that isn't him. He so wanted them for himself but he dared not say that in front of them.
“Dad! I have heard everything. I just don't want her to fall into the hands of another wrong man,” he replied, raising both his hands in the air. Marie glared at him from head to toe, nodding in mockery.
“Okay, now to your turn. When do you plan on getting married? I thought you and Verena had something going on for a very long time?” His father inquired eagerly, looking forward to his agreement and approval. But then Vincent shaked his head in disapproval.
They all looked at him stunned at his reaction. But he still said nothing.
“Can you make this make sense?” His father growled, almost getting upset. “Don't tell me all those years were wasted?” He continued angrily. Everyone already thought they were a couple though he had never mentioned it to anyone. But the way Verena clinged to him always gives off that impression.
“Dad! Nothing serious is going on between me and Verena, I have told her that for so long. It's strictly business, any other thing she does is best known to her,” he blurted out and his father was shocked.
“Wait! What did you just say? His father fired at him. “Do you know the implications of what you just said?” He shouted that Morris woke up from his sleep. Marie excused herself to take him up to their room.
“Why didn't you cut her off entirely years ago, you used her to get all your contracts and here you are saying bullshit!” Mr Alessio backed at him. Mrs Lawrence went to sit beside him to calm him down.
“No! I told him! I personally warned him against working with her if he doesn't want what she wants. Darling! That girl is toxic and dangerous. She can do anything to get what she wants. But no Vincent refused and took it as a joke.”
Marie stood at the door listening to them for a while after placing Morris to sleep.
“You are definitely on this s**t alone,” his father yelled and stormed out of the room.
