CHAPTER 12A Prisoner That night Amadel watched her father’s window from her own. Lights burned in his study until very late. They were still there when she dozed off. This encouraged her. It meant that he was locked away with his secret labors and he would be up till dawn, then sleep through the day. She would not be seen leaving the castle in the morning. A few hours later she rose, breakfasted quickly, and ran to the cave where Menas waited. She roused him and said breathlessly, “You’ll have to leave. My father knows you’re here.
