INTRODUCTIONGordon R. Dickson (1923–2001) was a Canadian-born American science fiction writer. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta,but after his father's death, he moved with his mother to Minneapolis in 1937. During World War II, from 1943 to 1946, he served in the United States Army. After receiving his discharge papers, he attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1948. From 1948 through 1950 he attended the University of Minnesota for graduate work. His first-published science fiction story was “Trespass!” (co-authored with Poul Anderson, with whom he would collaborate regularly in coming years). “Trespass!” appeared in the Spring, 1950 issue of Fantastic Stories Quarterly, then under the editorship of Sam Merwin.
