Chapter Two: The Private Review

1336 Words
The morning sun cut through the skyscraper’s glass like a spotlight, illuminating every corner of Morgan Industries’ top floor. Lila Hart adjusted her blazer nervously as she waited outside Ethan Morgan’s office. Today, she wasn’t just presenting numbers to the board. Today, she faced the full force of the man who had unsettled her more than anyone ever could. Her phone vibrated in her hand. A text from her assistant blinked on the screen: “Ethan’s waiting. Be professional. Don’t underestimate him.” Lila took a deep breath. Professional. That word felt heavy in her chest. She had never been more professional or more terrified. The door swung open before she could knock. “Come in.” Ethan’s voice was calm, but the command in it made her heart skip a beat. Inside, the office was sleek, minimalist, every surface polished to perfection. The skyline stretched behind him, a constant reminder of the empire he commanded. And sitting behind the massive mahogany desk, Ethan Morgan looked like he owned not just the company but the world. “Miss Hart,” he said, gesturing to the chair opposite him. “Sit.” She obeyed, heels clicking softly against the hardwood floor. Her palms were clammy, but she forced herself to straighten, to meet his gaze. “I trust you reviewed the feedback from yesterday’s board meeting?” he asked, leaning back slightly, fingers steepled. “Yes,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’ve adjusted the projections based on market volatility and implemented contingency measures for each department.” Ethan’s eyes narrowed, assessing. “Good. But numbers aren’t everything, Miss Hart.” Lila blinked. “Excuse me?” He leaned forward, elbows resting on the desk. His gaze was sharp, almost predatory. “People are the key. Data can guide you, but it’s human error, human emotion… that decides the outcome. Tell me, do you have the leadership to handle that?” She swallowed hard. Leadership. He wasn’t just questioning her plan, he was questioning her. But she refused to show fear. “I do. I’ve managed teams before, and I’ve always met expectations. I’m ready to take responsibility.” Ethan leaned back again, letting her words hang in the air. Then, unexpectedly, he smiled small, almost private, like she had stumbled into a secret. “Confidence. Bold. Dangerous,” he murmured, echoing the words from yesterday. “I like that.” Lila’s stomach fluttered, betraying her calm facade. She couldn’t tell if it was thrill or dread or both. “Now,” Ethan said, straightening, “let’s review the plan in detail. I want to see how you’ll execute it under pressure.” He pressed a button, and the office screen lit up, showing the slides she had worked on all night. Each number, each strategy, each projection it was all there. And for the first time, she noticed him leaning closer, scanning each line, his expression unreadable. Halfway through, he stopped. “Miss Hart, this part… the marketing campaign. You’re relying heavily on social media influencers. Risky, isn’t it?” “It’s calculated,” she said, trying to sound confident. “We’ve identified influencers whose demographics match our target audience, and the projected ROI is significant.” “And if it fails?” he asked, eyes locking onto hers. “What then?” Lila’s throat went dry. What then? She couldn’t lie. “We have contingency plans. We pivot quickly, minimize losses, and adjust the strategy.” Ethan leaned back, tapping a finger on the desk. “Impressive. But tell me…” His voice lowered, almost intimate, “are you this meticulous with everything in your life? Or just when someone is watching?” The question made her heart skip a beat. She hesitated, unsure how to answer. Is he probing my secret? “I… I focus on what matters,” she said carefully. His eyes glimmered, a mixture of amusement and intrigue. “Good answer. But remember, Miss Hart, in my office… nothing goes unnoticed. Especially not secrets.” Lila’s pulse quickened. He knows. She had been so careful but clearly, Ethan Morgan had ways of discovering things no one else could. For the next hour, he grilled her, asking questions she hadn’t anticipated, probing weaknesses in her plan and testing her poise. And yet, despite the tension, there was a strange electricity between them. Every glance, every deliberate pause, every subtle smirk he offered seemed designed to unsettle her… and somehow excite her at the same time. Finally, he leaned back, hands behind his head. “You handle pressure well. Better than I expected.” Lila exhaled quietly, relief and apprehension mixing in a confusing swirl. “Thank you, sir.” Ethan studied her silently, then said, “There’s one more thing. Before you leave, I want you to… accompany me.” Her stomach dropped. “Accompany you?” “Yes.” He stood, walking around the desk, each step deliberate. “I want to show you something. Consider it… part of your review.” Lila followed him down the hall, heels clicking on the polished marble. Her mind raced. Is this still professional? Or is he… testing me? The elevator doors opened, and they stepped out onto the rooftop terrace. The city stretched beneath them, lights sparkling like a sea of stars. For a moment, Lila forgot the tension of the office, the scrutiny of the board, the weight of her secret. Ethan leaned against the railing, watching the horizon. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” he said softly. “It is,” she admitted, caught off guard by the softness in his tone. He turned to her, gray eyes intense. “Lila… you’re ambitious, talented, and dangerous in your own right. But this industry… it chews people like you up and spits them out if they’re not careful. Do you understand that?” “Yes,” she whispered. He stepped closer, so close she could feel the warmth of his body, smell the faint hint of his cologne something crisp, powerful, intoxicating. Her heart pounded. “Good,” he said. “Because I don’t tolerate mistakes. Not in business… and certainly not in matters that are… personal.” Lila’s breath caught. Personal? She didn’t know what he meant, but the intensity in his gaze was enough to make her knees weaken. “Ethan…” she started, but he held up a hand, stopping her words. “No interruptions,” he said softly, almost tenderly. “This is your first lesson.” Her mind raced. What lesson? Business? Life? Or something… else? He looked out over the city for a long moment, then spoke again. “Tomorrow, we begin a new chapter, Miss Hart. One that will test your skills, your judgment… and perhaps… your heart.” Her pulse thundered in her ears. Heart. The word lingered between them, heavy and electric. She couldn’t decipher if it was a warning or a promise. The rooftop wind picked up, fluttering her hair against her face. She brushed it back, suddenly aware of how close he was, aware of the charged silence, aware that the air between them was different, volatile, dangerous, magnetic. Finally, Ethan straightened. “You may leave now. Prepare yourself. Tomorrow, the real challenge begins.” Lila stepped back, feeling both exhilarated and terrified. As she walked toward the elevator, she couldn’t shake the feeling that everything had changed. Ethan Morgan wasn’t just a CEO. He was a force, a storm she had walked into and somehow, she wanted to stand in it, to face it… to survive it. The doors closed, separating them, and she pressed her back against the glass, taking deep breaths to calm her racing heart. Tomorrow. The word echoed like a drumbeat in her mind. Tomorrow, she will face him again. And she knew one thing with absolute certainty: She wasn’t ready for what was coming… but she would not back down. Not from him. Not from her secret. And certainly not from herself.
