7. A hit and a miss

“Loving him is a sin; of that I’m fully aware. But a sinner I am.” ― Bella Jewel ---- (Mikayla) I recognized the beast right away. I stared into his eyes, which were like an unending abyss of blackness, and felt the cold shivers tiptoe along the length of my spine. I moved away from him as my bones tingled with fear. The dark wolf was staring at me, as if I were his prey. There was no room for doubt. Actually, I was his quarry. I winced as I pictured him stirring me with a large spatula while cooking me in a large pot. Ouch! What did I tell you about my stupid imagination? I looked at him, studying his massive build. I remembered the dream and the darkness that lingered in it. I could clearly see this beast killing that man without an ounce of regret. I could smell the stink of the blood. It was too real, that dream. Was it really a dream? Was it something else? How could this animal I had seen in my dream come and traipse in front of me? I wasn't sure anymore. "Get away from me, you beast. Ge-get the hell away from me, you monster," I stuttered out as I moved away from him. The stupid beast walked forward, his eyes stalking my every movement. I could run, but I knew he would catch me in a second. No use in runnig. Why the hell did I come alone? The animal growled at me. I knew there was no way in hell I could fight and win against this creature that was born from the bottom of hell, but what the heck. If I had to die, I would die fighting. I softly patted my back pocket, where I always carried a pocket knife. It wasn't big but it was useful. My dad has taught me how to fight since I was five. That was the only thing he was strict about. He would tell me that this was the only way I was going to survive life in Euretya. Without any power, self-defense and swords were the only things that were going to keep me alive. And so I had learned to fight. Day and night, I trained until I became good at it, until he was satisfied. I widened my legs and turned my body slightly away from the beast, waiting for it to attack. His eyes narrowed and I could see the curious look in his eyes. As if he wanted to know what I was doing. His eyes were sharp and shrewd as he leaped at me. I took a step back, quickly twisted around, and I punched him in his stomach, and winced. I was sure I hurt myself more than I hurt him. He barely even flinched. Oh, the heck with it! I was no match for this stupid creature. I pulled out the knife with a quick flick of fingers, glaring at him. His eyes shone as he stared at the small knife. The animal howled and then snarled at me, snapping his sharp teeth. Okay, those were some pretty sharp teeth. And I was sure, when he bit me and chewed me, I was going to feel every damn thing. "If you are going to kill me, please be quick," I whispered as he stalked towards me and bumped me in the leg. I stumbled a little and bared my teeth. The stupid beast leered at me. I was sure he was enjoying my plight. I hadn't even said goodbye to my mom and dad. I was angry with my mom. I told her, not in so many words, that I hated her. No. F*ck. I couldn't die like that. "If I had my sword, I could easily decapitate you," I said with a frown in his direction, my knife still raised above my face, and I was sure he shrugged. I didn't know how I knew. "Hey Blaze, Blaze, where are you?" I heard a voice coming out from the dense trees, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe I was not going to die tonight. Beta Caleb came out, looking sweaty and tired. "Oh, you found her. Why didn't you call for me?" Caleb looked at the animal and then turned towards me with a reassuring smile on his face. "It is okay, you are fine, now," he said as he took a step towards me. I looked at him and then at the massive wolf, shaking my head in frustration. "Do you know this-this stupid beast?" I looked at the Beta and he gave me a quick look as he shook his head at me. The wolf growled at me. Oh, so he didn't appreciate me calling him a stupid beast? Well. Guess what?! I didn't appreciate him toying with me. "That is Blaze. Our Alpha's wolf. We were worried when we went back and you weren't there. We guessed you were lost and so we came to find you. Thank the Goddess you are safe." I narrowed my eyes at the Alpha Wolf. "You could have told me. Did you have fun playing with me? You are such a jerk!" I snapped and then bit my tongue. That wasn't what I wanted to say, but guess I was too angry to think twice before spitting out the words. I was angry and embarrassed. I remembered my display of bravery and flushed even further as I glared at him. The wolf looked at me for a second before he bounded into the forest, and soon he was swallowed by the tall trees. I sighed as I turned toward the beta. "Don't mind him. He is not a social person." "You didn't have to tell that to me," I said with a frown, and Beta Caleb laughed. He was not like the stupid Alpha. "Come on, let's take you home," he said, and my stomach growled. He looked at me and chuckled, and motioned for me to follow him. After another half an hour, I was back at the pack house. My mother rushed toward me as soon as I walked in. She took my face in her hands as she scanned me. "You okay, baby? Oh Goddess, pup... where did you disappear?! I couldn't even imagine-" For once, I absolutely didn't hate her calling me a pup. "I am fine," I said with a smile as she sniffed my hair. I knew I must smell terrible, but I was weirdly comforted by the gesture. "I am glad you are fine," my mother's mate said as he handed me a tall mug. My smile wilted as I looked at him with confusion. I could see he was a good man, but the fact that he was the man who was the reason for the way my family was now in shambles, wasn't getting him any brownie points. He gave me a look when I didn't get the mug from him. "Umm, it is- this is hot chocolate with Melvorian cinnamon sticks. You will like it. Come on," he said, looking at me nervously. My mother cleared her throat and sighed. Oh! How the other half lived. We weren't exactly poor, but we never had enough money to waste on chocolate and cinnamon sticks. They were a luxury for us. I gave my mother a look, and she looked down at her shoes, which I noticed were something new and costly. "Come on, Kay, take it. It will warm you up nicely." "Yes. Thank you." I grabbed the cup from him and sat down at the table. He looked at me for a second before he walked away. I glared at his back before I took a sip of the chocolate and closed my eyes with a sigh. "Come on, Mikayla, can you please stop looking at him like that?" my mother said with a deep sigh. It was that motherly sigh. The one that would tell you how wrong you were without words. I knew this sigh! "Like what?" "Like you wanted to twist his arm or neck. It isn't his fault," my mother said, with a pleading look in her eyes. "No, it isn't. It is yours, right? Years with dad, and you choose someone you have known for what? Ten days?" "You will understand it when you meet your mate," she said, as if it was the most natural thing to say to your tainted daughter. I slammed the mug on the table, and the hot liquid sloshed before settling down. My heart, though, wasn't settled. "Oh, right. I will know all about it, then, in my dream." I stood up from my chair, my body shaking in rage. "I am so sorry, baby, I- I forgot." "Oh, you forgot? I always knew you were disappointed to have a tainted as your daughter. You call me Pup! I am not a pup. " "Baby, come on. You know, you know it wasn't like that. You are my daughter and I love you." She looked so sad. Her eyes were filled with melancholy, and I felt like the worst bit.ch that was ever born in Euretya. "No, no, I am sorry. I was tired and I miss dad and I just- sorry." I sat back down on the chair. "Just give me a few days, mom. I am still- I didn't want to do this." I closed my eyes with a tired frown. I would love to go back to bed and not wake up for another two weeks. And then, I would go to live with my dad, and that house would never again smell like my mom and her weird, half-burnt cookies. The thought of it was like a punch in my gut. I took in a deep breath, calming myself down. "Yes. Take your time." My mom walked out, and I sat in complete silence. But my head was screaming with a million thoughts. It was so hard to connect them, or even find an order. I just sat there, sipping the chocolate that had gone cold, wondering why this was happening to me. When I heard the door open, I looked up to see August walking in. He was wearing a tight t-shirt and shorts, and he had mud streak on his face, but he looked delicious enough to eat on the side of the chocolate drink. But wait... yes, I was angry at him. He gave me a nod. A nod? That was what I got after he scared the hell out of me? I glared at the back of his head as he walked inside. He stopped and turned to look at me, as if he could sense my glare, and gave me an impudent look. "What?" he snapped. "Nothing." On the inside, I was screaming, cursing and clawing at his eyes. Jerk, Asshole. Handsome asshole. Gorgeous jerk. "Oh, your eyes are saying a million things right about now. Do you want a sword? You think you could have taken him with a sword?" he scoffed, and I bristled. I growled at him, and he shook his head, his eyes glinting in arrogance and mockery. I was always an introvert, but I was also not a freaking helpless wimp. My dad always made sure of that. Right now, he was looking at me as if he was challenging me. I could hear, what can you do, you tainted girl? It angered me. I never thought twice when I was angry. I grabbed the knife from the fruit bowl that was on the table and threw the knife. It hit the side of the wooden door he was leaning against. He jerked back in alarm, and his eyes widened as he looked at me. If I wanted, I could have sent the knife through one of his eyes. I had a deadly aim. "Oh, I am sorry, Alpha. My hand slipped." He growled at me, pulled the knife out, and stalked towards me, his every step calculated and predatory. He plunged the knife into the table next to my palm and gave me a dark look. "My hand can slip, too. Be careful." ----- I have a f@cebook group called QUEENS FROM HELL - come say Hi, if you want!
