“Ney… Ney... wake up.” A soft voice whispered.
“NICOLE!” Someone suddenly ear-piercingly whisper-shouted.
“왜? 왜?(Wae? Wae?-Why? Why?) Is there something wrong? Are you okay?!” I asked with a panicked expression.
I saw the two snickering in the corner as if something extremely funny just happened.
I asked what was wrong for the second time but instead of answering my question, Sarah pointed at the sun that was about to set.
The color scheme looks so pretty...it gives me hope…
Too bad, this sunset doesn’t even have any idea how it gave me the will to survive.
I closed my eyes to steady my breathing and calm my nerves.
I slowly moved towards the driver’s seat to see if there’s anything good enough to use.
I opened the storage box and there I saw a small flashlight, screwdriver, scissors and a pack of cigarettes.
I took all of them including the cigarettes…
“Wait, what will you do with that cigarette? You don’t smoke.” Sarah asked confused.
“You never know, maybe we can use it in the future,” I answered while giving her the screwdriver, and handing the pair of scissors to the lady.
“If something happens, just stab those zombies with that,” I said referring to the screwdriver and the scissor I gave them.
“What about you?” asked the lady.
“Don’t worry miss, this girl may look thin and fragile but she is a good fighter.” Sarah proudly said with a cheerful smile.
“I’m not. I just know a few basic self-defenses.” I argued.
“Can you at least back me up? What a great friend you are. Tsk.” Sarah spoke, clearly annoyed.
She just said that I’m a good fighter because when I met her for the first time, I was fighting with the bullies in school, defending the poor girl.
I am not that tough. I just hate seeing people use their power to oppress and mistreat the weak.
I put the flashlight in my pocket and wore ny hoodie.
I then checked my bag and made sure I have all the things I need.
I nodded again as a sign for them to get ready. The sun is almost gone, we have to move soon.
They nodded back, looking a bit anxious.
“At the count of three, I’ll open the door slowly. I will go first, and then the both of you follow after me.” I commanded.
“One... two…
..three…,” I carefully opened the door in order not to make a sound.
I nervously set my foot on the ground as I squat and slowly moved aside to make way for the others.
Thankfully, the zombies are far away from us.
The sun was now fully hidden. Thankfully, I have good eyesight.
While Sarah was closing the front door, it suddenly creaked and my heart almost stopped right then and there.
Geez, this is taking years of my life away.
Sarah clung her arms to me as we walked step by step.
We nervously passed by zombies. It’s dark so I don’t think they can see us unless we make a sound.
We can’t open the flashlight because zombies might see us. And we don’t want that to happen.
After a couple of silent walks, we reached a wide-opened gate.
“So where do we go?” Sarah whispered.
I remained silent and gathered my thoughts.
“There might be zombies in the building, so we can’t go in there.” I stated quietly.
“But what if there isn’t?” The lady counterfeited. “Fine, we’ll take the risk.” I agreed begrudgingly.
I stopped behind the big pole on the side of one of the buildings. I then scanned the area for any possible zombie attacks.
“Stay here and I’ll take a look at the other buildings. I’ll come back later.” I spoke.
“What if there are zombies there?” Sarah asked with a hint of worry in her voice.
“We don’t know that yet but we can’t just stay here all night.” I argued.
“I’ll come with you then.” Sarah retorted, seemingly firm with her decision.
“No, stay here. I promise to find a safe place and come back here as soon as possible. If we go together, we might be slow each other down.” I commanded to which Sarah replied with a short nod before holding my hands.
“Be careful.” She reminded and gave me the screwdriver that I gave her earlier. “I promise.” I spoke and proceeded to walk my way out.
I carefully ran towards the door of the first building. I glanced at each side of the alley before proceeding to another door.
I touched the doorknob and slowly twisted it. Thank Goodness it’s open.
I peeked inside only to see complete darkness. Geez, is this a cemetery or something? The door creaked as I nervously walked inside, biting my lower lip.
I took the small flashlight in my pocket and opened it.
As soon as I opened the light, something rushed towards me, pushing me into the wall. I put the flashlight in front of me and I saw the hungry face of the monster getting near me. I put my arms at its neck to avoid its mouth.
I tried to reach the screwdriver with my right hand as it fell on the ground when the zombie rushed towards me earlier, while my left hand is still holding it off. I can feel my eyes brimming with tears that are struggling to keep their hold.
I don’t want to die!
I finally reached the screwdriver and immediately stabbed the zombie’s head with it. The screwdriver screeched on its skull as series of blood spurt directly onto my face. The f is your problem btch!
After stabbing it multiple times, I was finally satisfied and kicked it real hard.
I picked up the flashlight on the ground that fell out of my hands a while ago.
I then walked towards the stairs that lead me to a creepy-looking corridor.
To my surprise, there are a couple of zombies in there walking slowly with their unconscious minds. I silently walked downstairs, careful not to make any sound.
I guess this concludes that this building is not safe.
Once I was finally at the ground floor, I rushed out of the building as fast as I can and proceeded to go to another building.
I walked inside and opened my flashlight, checking the surroundings.
Thank Goodness, there’s no monster welcoming me this time. I walked into the hallway while checking the doors one by one. But it was unusually silent that it was starting to be suspicious.
I proceeded to the second floor and it was empty as well. This is odd. Something’s not adding up.
I shrugged my suspicion and decided this will be our place for the night.
Let’s just hope this place is safe.
