Carter Thompson left the city behind, drove fast along the highway to Gosford. He was about half-an-hour out when he felt the car swerve to the left, almost hitting the side rail along the highway. He slowed down gently, pulled up in the safety lane. Got out of the car. He had a flat tyre, shrugged, opened the boot, got the spare out, only it was flat too. He didn’t know if it was a puncture or just flat. He couldn’t remember the last time it happened. Maybe it was Aimee and she forgot to tell him. She would have called roadside assistance and forgot about it probably. That’s what he did now. Called them and was told it would be about an hour. At least it wasn’t raining. How would Tanya be? She looked pensive in the photo with Paul’s brother. He rang James Roach, said, ‘What happening?’
