Serenity POV*
In the lunch room, I sat next to Kale. I picked my burger apart with my fingers – school food was less than appealing. Kale and his friends were talking about the latest video games. I liked video games and played them often with my brothers, but Kale often got upset if I talked about video games with his friends. To him, it was like flirting.
I saw Luka walking to his table. He waved to me and I waved back. We gave each other a small smile and he took his seat with his friends.
“You sure do pay a lot of attention to him. You got a crush on your brother?” Kale teased.
“He's not my brother, and no.” I said. “We have the same half brother, we aren't related.”
“Oh whatever.” Kale said.
Kale was extremely jealous and possessive. He would often scold me if he thought I was paying too much attention to another man. We had a lot of arguments about it.
The school day was usually boring. Today was no exception. I had most of my classes with Kale except for two classes. Gym class, and Algebra. In a way, I looked forward to the classes that I wasn't under Kale's thumb. During our classes together, I sat next to him and I wasn't really able to talk to anyone else. If he thought I was talking too much to someone, he would get jealous and rude. It was stressful.
Things weren't all bad, though. Kale was my first boyfriend. He was sweet a lot of the time. We would always hold hands, go on little dates when we could meet secretly away from our parents, and kiss each other. He was thoughtful and kind a lot of the time. He would bring me small gifts and we would make plans for our futures.
Finally, it was getting towards the end of the day. I had Gym the last period of the day. I was grateful for this, because it gave me time to recover from the morning's practice and an afternoon shower before heading home to study the laws of the wolf world.
Gym went quickly. I showered just as quickly, towel dried my hair and then got dressed. As I was walking out of the gym, Josh, a boy from my pack, caught up to me.
“Hey, Serenity.” He said, his breathlessness from jogging apparent as he huffed out the words.
“Hey Josh, what's up?” I asked, smiling.
“I have to cut on studying tonight because my dad's gotta work late and I have to help mom around the house. Can you let the Alpha know?” He asked me. He was speaking quietly for the last bit, afraid a human would be close enough to hear. We regularly forgot how terrible human hearing was and became unnecessarily paranoid.
“Sure, I'll tell him.” I said. He thanked me and then ran off with a wave.
Before I could wave back, I ran into someone. My head hit against their chest. I was embarrassed, and then I looked up. Kale. I was just happy it wasn't a stranger.
“New boyfriend?” Kale sneered at me.
“No... Just a boy from the pack, needed me to pass a message to the Alpha.” I whispered. I couldn't specify, as we couldn't allow other packs to know our training methods.
Kale put an arm around my waist. I was happy he wasn't angry at first, but then I realized we were swiftly backing up. He pushed me hard, my back hitting into a row of lockers. It knocked my breath out of my lungs, and I was afraid. His hand hit against the lockers, causing a loud echo near my ear. I flinched. He grabbed my chin roughly.
“Look at me.” He said through clenched teeth. “If I ever catch you getting close with someone else, I'll kill him, and you too. You are mine.” He pushed my head back into the locker.
“Is there a problem?” Someone shouted. I recognized the voice. Luka.
“Nothing that concerns you, douche bag.” Kale yelled.
“Let go of her.” Luka said, his tone angry and authoritative. A lesser wolf would've been forced to obey, but two Alphas held no weight to each other.
Kale didn't let go of me. He was holding me almost by my throat, now. Luka approached and tore him off of me. Kale let out a loud growl which snapped us all into reality. Humans shouldn't witness this.
“See you around, bitch.” Kale growled close to my face.
I had tears in my eyes that began to spill over as he walked away. Luka was suddenly in front of me. He put a finger gently under my chin and pulled it up to take a look at the marks it left.
“Bastard. Are you alright?” He asked. I nodded. “Let's go, I'll take you home.”
We walked silently to his car. He drove a convertible that was older than our parents because he thought it was cool. It was cool, actually. I slid into the passenger seat and buckled up. The rest of our assortment of siblings and friends had caught rides home with friends.
“I'm gonna take the long way home to listen to music if that's okay with you.” He said.
“Okay.” I groaned and then giggled. The only thing older than Luka's car was his music preferences. Once he turned on his playlist, he became immediately animated. He drummed the steering wheel and danced, singing his favorite parts of the song loudly to me.
“What do you plan on telling your 'rents about your neck?” He asked.
“I don't know, weird collision with a kid in gym class?” I said it more as a question.
“Yeah, I saw it happen.” He said, putting a cigarette to his lips and beaming at me with all of his teeth. He lit the cigarette, knowing it would be his only for today because his parents would probably murder him if they saw him with a cigarette.
“Thanks.” I said. He was covering for me. We'd always covered for each other.
When we got home, it was almost dark. My neck would be healed by morning, so I hoped the dim lighting of the night would provide enough coverage until then. Luka opened his trunk after he got out and tossed me his hoodie, hand signaling for me to put the hood up. I put it on and put the hood up. He pulled my hair down through the hood and around my neck before giving me a thumbs up. I would never be allowed to see the light of day if my parents found out I had a boyfriend, and as much as I knew Luka wanted to rip Kale's throat out, he knew my parents would probably do worse if they knew.
We grabbed our books from our houses – we lived across from each other and had our whole lives. I grabbed my favorite blanket for sitting on outside and ran downstairs. As usual, Luka was waiting for me.
“Ladies first!” He exclaimed, bowing dramatically. I laughed and walked ahead of him to the fire where our pack waited to hear an adult or an Elder speak on a topic.
