After we had all eaten, we all headed back to our rooms to shower and change. I hadn’t seen Riley or Max at training or at breakfast, I hoped that they were just sleeping in and not getting in to any trouble.
We were just about to enter our rooms, when a door down the hall opened.
“Seriously man, just think about what you’re doing!” I could hear a male saying from inside the door way. We all stopped in our tracks just looking at one another.
“You can’t just go wondering around the pack house looking through everyone’s stuff. What if you get caught? The Captain isn’t going to be able to bail you out this time.
Everyone’s eyes were on me, we were all listening to the person while just standing in the hallway.
“I don’t give a f**k, there is something going on! How else would he have gotten her to stay with him? To let him be that close to her? He did something to her and I’m going to find out what!” Oh for gods sake, Riley seriously couldn’t just accept that I had turned him down. This was becoming a serious issue, if he couldn’t put his personal feelings aside for the sake of our mission I was going to have to send him back to command.
I let out a loud sigh rubbing my fingers on my temples, why does this have to be so difficult?
“ I think if you’re going to discuss your plans to invade someone’s privacy, you shouldn’t do it out in the open in a hallway where anyone could hear you.” Alice said with irritation in her voice.
I had told her everything that had gone on with Riley while we were having our girls time and she was beyond furious with him for not respecting my boundaries or the word No. Alice had told me how while we were in training he would tell any of the guys that had mentioned that they liked me in any way to back off that I was taken. That had just made me even more angry at him, he had taken any opportunity for me to have even a little bit of experience in the love department by scaring everyone off.
“Told you it wasn’t a good idea.” I heard Max say under his breath as he walked out of the room to greet us. He smiled at us and came and gave Alice and I a hug, gaining glares from out mates.
“It’s ok, he isn’t interested in either of us” I whispered so that only those with super hearing would actually hear me. I saw both Gareth and Nicolas relax just a little but they still looked at Max like he was a threat.
Max liked to keep his love life to himself. He was very talkative with Alice and wasn’t with anyone else, not even Riley. He hadn’t said anything to either of us until some of the boys we went through training with beat him up that he actually told Alice and I why he was always in fights. He never told Riley though, he didn’t want to be treated differently by someone he saw as a friend.
“He has been obsessing over you turning him down, he thinks that you’re under some kind of spell or something.” Max whispered as Riley stomped over to us. Hatred in his eyes as they landed on Nicolas, who didn’t seem to care that Riley was burning holes in his head.
“I want you to head into my room, we need to have a chat.” I said back to Max who nods his head and walked into the lounge area of our room shutting the door behind him.
Lily and Leo said their goodbyes and headed to their own room to get cleaned up. Alice and Gareth were standing behind us, I had a feeling that Gareth was probably sticking around in case things got messy.
“ Riley, care to explain why we over heard you talking about going through other peoples belongings?” I ask in a stern tone, I didn’t want him to think he would be able to get away with lying to me or not answering me at all. He kept quiet still shooting glares at Nicolas as if he hadn’t even heard me speak. “RILEY!” I yelled having him turn to me.
“He’s done something to you, I was going to find proof.” He spat out, his words dripping with venom. Nicolas growled next to me, he was pissed that Riley was still accusing him of brainwashing me.
“I have done nothing to your captain except treat her like a person instead of an object to be owned.” Nicolas spat back at him through gritted teeth, his fangs on show for everyone to see. I was beginning to think that maybe I needed to sit down with Max and Riley and tell them what was really going on but I just couldn’t trust them with that information right now.
“Yeah right jackass! You’re controlling her like she is some toy! I bet you even manipulated her in to f*****g you as well!” Riley yelled back with his hands clenched so hard they were turning white.
“RILEY! That is enough! I’m not some w***e to be used and thrown away!” I yell back, I was beyond furious now.
Riley’s face fell with the realisation of what he had just blurted out for all of a second before all his rage and hatred came back to the surface. Something changed in him, it was like something had taken control. His eyes were void of the boy I had known as he lunged forward towards Nicolas with his hand balled in to fists but before he got to Nicolas I was in front of him blocking Riley from my mate. Something seemed to snap in his mind as he registered that I was now in front of him causing his movements staggered. I could feel the waves of anger rolling off of me. Before Riley could move another step his body was restrained by and invisible force. He struggled against it but it was no use.
“What the f**k have you done to her?!” Riley screamed at Nicolas. “We will kill you! We will kill you for what you did!”
“He hasn’t done anything to her!” Alice snapped back at him. Looking just as shocked at the rest of his at his outburst. This wasn’t Riley, something was going on with him.
“There’s no way she would be interested in a leach like him!” Riley was still screaming. “WE WILL KILL YOU ALL!”
We? Who is we?
“ENOUGH! The only thing Nicolas has done is treat me like a real human, he doesn’t treat me like I’m property or some play thing! I’m not some toy for you two to fight over! It is my choice who I spend my time with not yours, not Nicolas’s, MINE!” I snapped back at him, surely this wasn’t just his obsession with me, was it?
My anger was raging inside of me. I was so sick of this bullshit! Why did someone always think they had a right to dictate who I could be with or what I could do? It was infuriating.
“We will kill him, we will kill all of them! We will complete the mission given.” Riley said in a robotic type tone, like he was speaking but it wasn’t really him. It was kind of creepy.
“Who is we? What mission?” I ask as I slowly move closer to the still struggling Riley. His focus was only on Nicolas like he was stuck in some kind of trance. Before he could answer, the sound of fingers clicking came from behind me, only to see Riley suddenly go limp and fall unconscious.
“Well, what did I miss?” Anya said as she walked over to us, eyeing Riley like he was some strange creature she had never seen before. Maybe she would know something, I hoped I was wrong but I had a sinking feeling there was something controlling Riley.
“Thank you for your assistance Anya, if you hadn’t arrived when you did this walking blood bag would have been dead on the floor by now.” Nicolas hissed in Rileys direction.
“It is my pleasure, he was starting to get on my nerves as well.” Anya replied, walking around Riley in a circle. “Hmm.” She hummed to herself as she circled him looking puzzled.
“What did you do to him?” Gareth asked while he poked Riley in the arm gaining no response from him.
“I put him in a deep sleep, he wont wake until I allow him to wake. Now, I was told I was needed?” She asked then turned to me, looking me up and down. “It looks like the Captain here has more power than I thought, your own powers are trying to break the spell that’s on you. I can feel your aura surging with your emotions, you need to try and stay as calm as possible or you will break the spell before it is safe to do so.” Anya said as if it were obvious, but I must have missed something. I was just feeling an overwhelming amount of pressure in my chest from being so angry, it wasn’t anything new for me though. “Just take a few deep slow breaths to calm your soul.” I took a couple deep breaths just as she instructed and slowly I could feel the overwhelming pressure in my body subside.
“Good, that’s very good.” Anya said in a gentle soothing voice, it was almost motherly. After a few deep breaths I was able to speak.
“Yes, I need you to send a message. But first I need you to check Riley over.” I say rubbing my temples, I was beginning to get a headache.
“I was actually going to write a letter to the witches council requesting a meeting with the human leaders and the leaders of the other supernatural council to discuss the matter of you being mated to a vampire Royal and Alice being mated to a werewolf Alpha.” She replied.
“Wait, why do you need Anya to check Riley? And why do we need to have a meeting with all the supernatural leaders?” Alice asked.
“Well, seeing as there is a possibility that other supernaturals could be mated to humans it is something that everyone in the supernatural and non-supernatural world need to be aware of and an understanding that if the humans refuse to honour this union of humans and supernaturals that there will be a war. There are some that will refuse based on the history with humans but most believe the gods gave us mates for a reason and would never refuse the possibility that their mate is out there waiting to be found.” Anya explained. Well s**t, looks like we are in for an even bigger confrontation later on down the track if this doesn’t work out well. “Captain, I can check him over but I’m unsure why you think it is needed. Can you please explain what happened before I intervened?”
“He was raving on about Nicolas having done something to me but then his eyes went blank, like it was him but not him and tried to attack Nicolas. He kept repeating the ‘we will kill you’, not ‘I will kill you’ and said the mission will be completed. It was like he was being controlled so how.” I explained to her. She thought it over a little before nodding.
“ I will do my best to find out what is happening to him, but I can not guaranty that I will be able to undo it without help from another council member if it’s something dark magic has done.” She replied. Great, one more thing to worry about. Dark magic was something we never had to deal with much, the witch council had their own law enforcers that would handle the spell casters that had gone dark by either killing an innocent or practicing blood magic. The only way around the killing was if it was in self defence, if they were attacked they could defend themselves but they couldn’t kill unprovoked unless there was a true threat to their life. It was rare to have dark casters around now because they were usually taken care of quickly before they became an even bigger problem.
The conversation had gone on while I thought to myself about everything thats been going on and the slow changes in Riley over the time we have been on this mission. I realised that his mood had changed a couple days before we had been given the mission. Gods had something happened to him even before we left for this mission? I tuned back into the conversation as hear the voice of my mate.
“Okay, I will get a message sorted for my parents and they will let the other Vampire council know to be expecting a summons from the witch council. Alpha Gareth, will you be able to contact the other Alpha’s in your council and let them know of this meeting being called. We should arrange it for a weeks time so that we can solidify our alliance and present as a united front.” Nicolas said from beside me. His hand was on my back with his thumb rubbing pattens on my skin. Gareth nodded and went to take Alice’s hand but stopped, sniffing the air and looking directly at my bedrooms now open door with a shocked looking Max standing with wide eyes and his mouth hanging open. s**t. . .
“What’s going on?” Max asked still staring at us with wide eyes. Damn it, there is no way he didn’t hear that or Riley suspended in the air unconscious.
“Max, how much of that did you hear?” Alice asked him taking a step closer to him.
“I heard enough.” He said looking at Alice and I like we had broken his heart. “Why wouldn’t you tell me you have soulmates?”
“Max, why don’t we take this in to the room and talk?” Alice asked him, this wasn’t going to be an easy talk. Max nodded and went back into mine and Nicolas’ room.
“Dont worry, he will understand once he knows why you didn’t tell him.” Nicolas whispered into my ear as we walked with Gareth and Alice into the room.
Max was sitting on the lounge with his hands in his lap. Nicolas and Gareth stood by the fireplace. Alice sat on one side of Max while I sat on the other. We heard a low growl come from the two men by the fire place, clearly not happy with how close we were to an unmated male. Geez, talk about possessive much.
“Max, we’re sorry we didn’t tell you but things are a bit complicated.” Alice tried to explain. “Luna, maybe you should start first.” Alice said looking at me expectantly, great. I wasn’t ready for this at all.
“Well, um. . . I didn’t know we were soulmates until we were in the cabin after being attacked by the rogue wolf and things got. . . a little heated.” I explained, I looked over at Nicolas only to see a sly smirk on his face as he remembered the encounter. “It wasn’t until we were at Anya’s sanctuary when she saw how protective Nicholas was of me and did a spell to see if there was a fated bond.”
“So you have known for that long and didn’t say anything?” Max asked sounding defeated and betrayed. “And did you know?” Looking at Nicolas.
“I knew as soon as I saw her in the throne room when you first arrived at the palace.” Nicolas said as if it was painful to say that he knew before I did and had to wait to tell me. “It wasn’t until I almost lost her that I decided to tell her and risk her rejecting me.” Max nodded seeming to understand what Nicolas was saying.
“After we arrived at Anya’s and she took some of my blood, she found something strange. . . ” I trailed off looking at my hands.
“Luna, what is it?” Max asked placing his hand on my shoulder only to quickly remove it after receiving a growl from Nicolas.
I took a deep breath, “my name isn’t Luna Martin.”
A long time passed before anyone spoke again. Alice and Max were looking at me like they didn’t know me anymore and I guess in a way they didn’t.
“What do you mean your name isn’t Luna? You have always been known as Luna.” Max said looking at me confused.
All eyes were on me, I wasn’t sure if I could tell Max my true name or if it would get back to the commanders and have them put a hit out on me. I had to trust my instincts though and Max had always kept our secrets but this was something huge that put not only my life at risk but those of the people I care the most about. I looked to Nicolas for some kind of support, a silent plea to help me explain this.
“Luna isn’t her name, and she isn’t human. She is the last living heir to the Ravenwood royal family. Her entire family was killed the night she was born and the spell caster that was assigned to the family smuggled her out and put a cloaking spell on her to make her appear as human.” Nicolas said as if it wasn’t a big deal. “ her real name is Isabella Ravenwood and I am her soulmate just as Alice is Alpha Gareth’s soulmate. We will do anything to protect our mates, including killing anyone that tries to harm them or give away their secrets including you if we have too.”
“You know I would never do that, you guys have kept my secrets! why would I spill yours?” Max said looking between Alice and I. He grabbed my hand in his and squeezed it. “I would never EVER do anything that would put you or Alice in danger, you’re the only true friends I have that I can trust with anything. You’re like family to me. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you two.” I gave his hand a squeeze back and a small smile, I don’t know why I ever thought I couldn’t trust Max with this. He had always tried his best to protect both of us. Alice leaned over and pulled both Max and I in for a group hug, receiving a growl from Gareth.
“Oh come on, did you not hear him? We are like family!” Alice scolded Gareth resulting in him blushing a little.
“Sorry babe, my wolf doesn’t like the thought of another unmated male touching you.” Gareth replied looking like a small child that had just been scolded for eating too many cookies before bed.
“You guys don’t have anything to worry about, as beautiful as they both are, they. . . um. . . they arent my type.” Max said turning a bright red like his hair. “You would be more my type. . . I like guys, I'm not into girls.”
…………………………
After I explained everything to Alice and Max, about everything from my childhood that I remembered and how Gareth, Leo and I grew up together and then what happened with Nicolas and I when he first told me I was his mate, along with what Anya had said about this Talbet guy. Things had gone quiet, Alice had moved so that Gareth could sit with her on his lap and I had done the same with Nicolas. Max had gotten up at some point during my explanation and was pacing.
“You said your real name was Ravenwood?” Max asked breaking the silence as he continued to pace.
“Yeah, why?” I asked. Max stopped pacing, a troubled look on his face.
“Because there is a book in the city library about the assassination mission of a family of vampires with the same last name.”
Holy f*****g s**t!
